Hi Zumi! Could you talk a bit about your Overgrown game? Like, whatās it about? What kind of game is it going to be? Have you started development? Overgrown is gonna be an RPG! It was initially going to be a comic. If you want a first impression, you can read the prologue and the first chapter here! Some of the information is outdated, but most of it is still correct, so you can get a gist of the storyās setting.Ā I chose to make it a game instead since it aligns with my passion with doing game art better, and also will make my work a bit more varied what with the wrist injury that still comes back to haunt me from time to time.
To copy the blurb I had written up a while ago;
When Pom--an easygoing but rather lazy 24-year old web developer--gets chosen by Mother Nature to become Estrella's protector against rampaging golems and receives a staff with immense magic power, she desperately tries to ignore the gift given to her in attempt to resume her ordinary life. Unfortunately for her, life has different plans, and especially gets hectic once she digs up a pompous golem-gone-rogue in her own backyard.
For the characters, these are the two main ones!! Theyāre called Pom & Damian!
The game is set in a modern fantasy setting, with one out of six people being capable of wielding magic. Estrella, the country the game takes place in, dealt with a large scale war 1 1/2 century prior to the gameās events which was largely the cause of golems controlled by an unknown force wreaking havoc all over. The war was settled eventually (read the prologue!!!), but in the modern day, Pom suddenly has the selfsame staff that supposedly fell into the abyss along with the mage that sacrificed himself following her around, appearing nearby wherever she goes. She takes this as a bad sign and tries to ignore it in the hopes that Mother Nature picks someone else, but it ends up not working out, and she inadvertently ends up having to fight the newly resurfaced threat of Golems, which havenāt been seen since the great war.
Damian, the golem Pom digs up in her backyard (and reactivates) by accident not long after she awakens to her magic, possesses intelligence and a personality of his own contrary to any of the Golems sheās faced prior to activating him. He seems to have crucial knowledge on how to deal with golems properly being one himself, but thereās more to it than just that; he just canāt remember what. While Pom and Damian are like oil and water, they end up agreeing to work together; Pom provides shelter and plant matter as sustenance for him, while Damian shares what knowledge he has on Golems and the situation at hand with Pom so she can deal with the threat more efficiently. They also end up working together in combat!
Gameplay wise Iām still figuring out the specifics, but the base Iāve already decided on. Think of Mario & Luigiās combatĀ being mixed with Zeldaās dungeons & puzzles!! Thereās also some other influences, and stuffās gonna be a bit more involved when it comes to the combat system, but those are the bare bones.
As a whole!! i have a lot of things planned. Itās gonna be fun!!!!!! I have a lot of things left to do in terms of setting up pipelinesĀ ān such, but I really do want to turn it into a full scale project. Iāve been brooding on the story since 2018 and Iām just very very excited that Iām starting to get places with the project.
