I truly hate the word "unalive." There are so many other euphemisms that fictional Italian mobsters worked so hard to provide you with and you just ignore them.

I hate that SEPTember OCTOber NOVember and DECember arenāt the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th months.

Todayās your lucky day
The benefits of an older OC
Iām gonna get up on my old person soap box here to extol to you the benefits of an older OC. Not geriatric. Iām unlikely to ever make a grandfather a whumpee, but your whumpees in their 30s and 40s.Ā
Pain hits different as you get older and it takes longer for it to feel better. That minor injury might just always be like that now. Sometimes it doesnāt take much People in this age group were also raised by theĀ āwalk it offā generation who thought that if you werenāt bleeding and the limb looked straight you were probably fine. They can be Stoic. As. Fuck.
Okay I need help getting down from my soap box. I managed to seriously strain my MCL in my sleep last night. For reals. This is the kind of random, real life, whump without a whumper shit that can happen to you older whumpee.
Iām slowly beginning to accept the reality that 2007 was not last year but in fact almost four years ago

āTake a good look, kids! This is what happens when youāre naughty!ā BROOKLYN NINE-NINE | The Pontiac Bandit Returns, 2.10
Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:
The protagonist isnāt always right
The protagonist isnāt always good
The protagonist isnāt always written to be relatable or likeable
The narrator isnāt always right
The narrator isnāt always good
The narrator isnāt always telling the truth
The narrator isnāt always the author
The protagonistās moral compass, the narratorās moral compass and the authorās moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they arenāt, you should read better books
Sometimes you found a book that is just perfect the first 60% and then amatonormativity shows up like an unrequired bitch.
When youāre thinking about whump in public and you start to worry about people reading your mind and youāre just likeā¦
Donāt think whumpy thoughts, donāt think whumpy thoughts, donāt think-
If one were to want to read some of the Biggles books, which in your opinion have the best EvS moments?
HI THERE. :D
I would definitely recommend these as the first two:
Biggles Files East
Biggles & Co.
Those are chronologically the first two with EvS but are also two of the ones that showcase him at his best and most Honorable-Enemy-ish with Biggles.
So those are those are the two I'd start with and are also some of the best.
If you like those, I also recommend from much later on and with the characters having a somewhat friendlier vibe:
Biggles: Foreign Legionnaire (EvS is only in a small part of the book, but what he's in features a reluctant team-up with Biggles and it's great)
Biggles Buries a Hatchet
Biggles Looks Back (these latter two are basically the majority of the Becomes Friends part of their Enemies to Friends arc)
There are also quite a number of books in between with EvS - you can find a full list of them here, and also some more recommendations here by @philomytha. But the above are the ones I'd recommend as your introduction to the character! Especially the first two.
Thank you so much! I canāt wait to read these and enjoy both the Honourable Enemy and Becoming Friends parts of their arcs!

has anyone done this one yet
@iliveonmylaptop
So my problem with most āget to know your characterā questioneers is that theyāre full of questions that just arenāt that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)Ā Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If Iām doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought Iād share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:Ā
What is the characterās go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)Ā
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)Ā
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things wereĀ ānormalā for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes theyāre wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is leastĀ favorite holiday.)Ā
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What doesĀ ānormalā even look like for them.)Ā
