Okay well let’s say you have your idea already and are ready to get it going

When people are pitching ideas to studios they sometimes create something called a logline that is basically like a 1 sentence synopsis of their story idea. The goal is to keep it as concise as possible.

For example, “Billy goes to the store.”

A very clever and creative idea already but not super fleshed out. A fun process for developing stories is to take this one sentence synopsis and turn it into a two sentence synopsis.

“Billy goes to the store. He buys milk and apples.”

Now we know a little bit more about the rich inner world of Billy….. let’s try to write it as three sentences.

“Billy goes to the store. He buys milk and apples. He is baking a pie for his mother.” Look at that, the story is already significantly better… so maybe at this point introduce a conflict of some sort. “He is baking a pie for his mother. He’s not sure if she even likes apple pie anymore. He doesn’t want to call her and ask because it would ruin the surprise.”
