I am certainly no accountant, but I do have a degree in economics and I know that cutting corporate taxes will not grow the economy, it will only fatten the wallets of those whose wallets are least in need of fattening. I also suspect that the nominal middle class tax cut is little more than a sugary dessert to appease the masses while the gluttonous kings of finance wine and dine each other at Mar-A-Lago and other Trump Properties while counting their riches. Trump has no way of recouping the trillions of dollars of debt with which his tax plan will burden the nation. He cannot run the country like he runs his businesses, simply refusing to pay creditors and threatening to sue them when they demand payment. This administration is an opaque and unaccountable instrument for the advancement of corporate wealth and power and a disingenuous adversary of civil and human rights. How can Congress allow this president to propose a tax reform bill without demanding he release his complete personal tax returns for public review? What in the world is he hiding? The American people must know how his tax plan affects his own finances. Why are so many of his cabinet-appointees, party members, and staff adamant that he need not expose his financial details? Their inaction is, in itself, a confirmation of his deviousness and his corrupt business practices. Because we have a shady character in the Oval Office and we are entitled to know just how shady he really is. Trump has said only the reporters want to see his returns, but he knows that isn't true. He has said he can't release his returns because he is under audit, but everyone knows that is not true. He has no excuse other than the fear of being exposed. So what can we learn from his full tax return? Well, we could learn about his potential conflicts of interest and whether or not he is using his office to enrich himself. Just as we were beginning to make progress cleaning up the environment and, in turn, reducing the risks of various cancers, brain damage, and deaths caused by exposure to the heavy metals, noxious gasses, and other toxins unleashed upon us by corporate industrial profiteers, our reckless leader has intervened. No longer will the dumping of toxic waste water into our rivers and streams be prohibited. No longer will CEOs need to worry about the financial costs of maintaining ethically responsible business practices. No longer will they need to answer to nearby communities on whom they dump their sludge. No longer will anyone be held accountable for negative health outcomes from the poisoning of the water supply or the food supply. Rather, they will be rewarded for their ignorance and disregard for the ecosystem. I grew up in the Cancer Corridor of New Jersey, a land of toxic waste dumps, landfills, and unregulated oil and gas industries. Wildlife populations were exterminated, the human population sickened, and the land forever contaminated. It was hell on earth, and it has been a long, dirty road to recovery. The removal of environmental protections in exchange for increased profits and the uncertain promise of jobs is a grave mistake. We may not know the real story for a while since it happened in a remote mountainous region, but we do know the area is home to about 95,000 people and we know the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, as its name suggests, is definitely not designed for precision bombing or for avoiding civilian casualties. However, it was dropped precisely in time to make headlines and push other stories further down the page. So, what stories won’t get much attention in Prime Time? Well, let’s see…..Today the Pentagon admitted to the accidental bombing of our allies in Syria, killing at least 18 in the worst “friendly fire” incident of the Syrian conflict. So far, they are quiet about the number of civilians killed…..And today, Trump signed an order allowing states to withhold federal funds from Planned Parenthood. I guess he’s not too concerned about the “babies, beautiful little babies” here in “The Homeland,” whose health is of great concern to Planned Parenthood, if not to Trump supporters.…..And today, Trump floated his new plan to sabotage Obamacare by withholding subsidies to insurance companies hoping to force them to withdraw from the program……And today, The Guardian reported “British spies were first to spot Trump team's links with Russia” as early as 2015. Others, including the German, Estonian, Polish, Australian, Dutch, and French intelligence agencies also documented Trump-Russia interactions through 2016……And, though they are not at the top of the page today, let’s not forget the investigations of Trump’s advisors, the Russian Agents, Carter Page and Paul Manafort….. Now, suddenly, he has been awakened to the importance of strategic alliances, so today Trump declared that NATO is no longer obsolete! Congratulations NATO, Donald approves of you again. On top of that, he needs China's help with North Korea. Today, he sent an "Armada" to the Korean Peninsula in another show of force, but he has no idea what to do next. Back at home, he has not made America great again, but rather he has begun to dismantle every institution that actually did make America great. From the environment to civil rights to health care to consumer protection to moral and ethical leadership, his policies actions are catastrophic. He came close to taking health insurance away from millions of Americans, but failed. Having missed that opportunity to leave another scar on the nation, he has now decided to put tax reform on hold and once again take up the fight against Obamacare. He is losing on all fronts and needs to look like a winner. Make no mistake; everything Trump does, he does out of vengeance. And if it were just a slip of the tongue, an awkward analogy, a simple mistake for which he had admitted his ignorance, it may have been a somewhat comical event. But, the White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, said, with a straight face, that unlike Assad, Hitler "didn't even sink to using chemical weapons." When called out for clarification of his comment, Spicer didn't backtrack, he just dug himself deeper into the pit of alternative facts, telling the Press Corp what he meant was Hitler didn't gas people "in public," he took them to "Holocaust Centers" – as if Holocaust Centers were akin to Rest Areas, Way Stations, or Hospitality Centers. Yes, people make mistakes, but please, this is the WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY SPEAKING FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Who writes these statements that are broadcast around the world? Who proofreads them? Do they have internet access? Is anyone willing to take responsibility for this stupidity? Who is in charge? I really could use a good laugh right now, and the situations presented by this administration would offer great opportunities for laughter if they weren't so seriously grave and laden with ignorance. I think we deserve some intelligence, some decorum, some research, some... facts.
