they say you left the River Rail & walked toward 7-11 some time around 2:45 in the morning. it snowed that night. I know this because that night I saw foxes. that night, I watched snow falling in the glow of a flickering streetlight, half a mile down the road.

I wonder if you made it to the bridge. I wonder if the view was something so perfect that you felt nothing but an innocent urge to get closer. I wonder if you left the bar too early & realized then that you just really needed to pee. I wonder if you walked down, slipped while unbuckling your belt, & became a part of the river. I wonder if I’ll ever sleep again. I wonder if it was the fall that took you out or if it was the cold. or maybe you just didn't know how to swim. I wonder if you stood here, in your last waking moments, with your hand on this railing, exhaling your last disgruntled sigh as the snow danced past your face on its way to becoming the river.

I wonder if it was on purpose.
