Looking into the gendering of mirrors was something I connected to “femininity” at first. I found growing up I always looked in mirrors to make sure I looked like a “girl.” i remember my high school boyfriends never had mirrors in their rooms, always saying “why would i need one.” i used a mirror to monitor myself in comparison to beauty standards. Going to a free dress school made it easier to compare myself to others. I used the object to view myself as an object. But as I've grown, mirrors have become something more expressive. Instead of looking and being criticised by myself for not looking like, kylie jenner, i look at the object as reflecting my gender and individuality instead. I think gendering mirrors (and all objects) is irrelevant, the object reflects the individual's gender who stares into it. which is a conclusion I've found comforting.
TECHNOLOGIES FOR SEDUCTIVE CRITICISM
gabriel maher
maher created a website through collabaration with cultural critic jefferson hack and dazed media in which is an interactive archive of pop culture/arts/music throughout 2014-2017. the background of these images are removed leaving only the skin of the individual to focus more on the body. it has an array of most searched to least searched images from this time span, from multiple cultures.Â
here i created my own still collage made out of some of the images in the archive, i found my eye came drawn towards things that were political in a sense, without even noticing until i finished the rework.
