Omg, yes. I love Nine on his own. I love Tails on his own (in aus and such). I also love Sonic+Tails/Nine a duo. But the idea of every version of Tails, in every universe, *needing* to "find a Sonic" or having a cosmic "destiny" of meeting him in some way is generally unappealing to me. (Tbh this goes for any duo/"unbreakable bond", not just Sonic/Tails). I dunno how to explain it, but it's almost... Discouraging? Like he has no chance unless this particular circumstance is met. Or something? Idk.
And yeah, I just like the idea of Nine making it on his own. Or forming relationships with other characters instead. Rusty+Nine and Knux+Nine are super interesting in particular and I've seen some cool art/fics of those duos! But anyway, yeah, I like Nine just existing without needing to be any more of a mirror to Tails than he already is, especially when it comes to Sonic. I really like the messy dynamic they had in the show. I always viewed it as Nine really wanting Sonic as his super cool friend, while Sonic of course saw him through a brotherly lens because of Tails.
I hope I didn't hijack your post too much, OP; I mostly just wanted to agree with you! (Also, of COURSE no shade on Sonic+Nine as brothers- there is a lot of amazing fics/art/ect that I love! So much cute fluff... and so much good angst! But yeah, just a big fan of Nine doing his own thing, too :])
