Beginnings, 2015
Another year, another blog! Isn't that how it always goes. I am the girl of infinite beginnings, who never seems to know when to stop starting anew. I am the patron saint of fresh starts, the queen of clean slates.
Another year, another attempt at reviving this tiny space of the Internet that I've somehow managed to call mine—albeit sparingly—for some time. You leave enough times, and you wonder if you are a fool to come back. But you always come back.
And it's not really mine, as much as it is everything I love (loved? used to love? will love again?) about this place.
Begin, you are told, at the beginning: I no longer blog for work, not even under the guise of a public institution, and have since eschewed the motley pleasures (and esteemed time-suck abilities) of Tumblr for the greener pastures of elsewhere: Reddit, Instagram, and possibly real life. I even started an actual journal using an actual notebook again, it was incredibly refreshing. But lonely: keeping a journal is a solitary pursuit at heart, and it's always nice to get jolted out of the little bubble I tend to keep myself to.
I thought I would start a new blog (again! How many have I had, to be honest I don't even remember anymore), but I've gotten quite fond of this place so instead I'm thinking of just changing my username. @merrymocking: holla at my 2009 self.
Is there anything to come back to, even? Are y'all still even here!!!
Another year, another fresh! new! hope! Will she, won't she, no one really knows, do they?

Chino Otsuka : Imagine Finding Me
Chino Otsuka uses photography and video to explore the fluid relationship between the memory, time and photography. At age 10 she moved from Japan to the United Kingdom to attend school. Her experience of becoming familiar with a new place, a different language and new customs while she was developing her adolescent identity has profoundly shaped her work in photography, video and writing. Her series Imagine Finding Me consists of double self-portraits, with images of her present self beside her past self in various places she has visited. As Otsuka says: “The digital process becomes a tool, almost like a time machine, as I’m embarking on the journey to where I once belonged and at the same time becoming a tourist in my own history.” - via AGO

One grand boulevard with trees with one grand cafe in sun with strong black coffee in very small cups. One not necessarily very beautiful man or woman who loves you. One fine day.
Not-so-secretly my favorite happy song, right up there with Tiny Dancer, haha.

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.” - Anthony Bourdain
Today, from a distance, I saw you walking away, and without a sound the glittering face of a glacier slid into the sea. An ancient oak fell in the Cumberlands, holding only a handful of leaves, and an old woman scattering corn to her chickens looked up for an instant. At the other side of the galaxy, a star thirty-five times the size of our own sun exploded and vanished, leaving a small green spot on the astronomer’s retina as he stood in the great open dome of my heart with no one to tell.

These, for me, are the two most depressing paintings in western history. They were painted by post-impressionist Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec, a man who, due to inbreeding, was born with a genetic disorder that prevented his legs from growing after they were broken. After being so thoroughly mocked for is appearance, he became an alcoholic, which is what eventually caused his institutionalization and death. His only known romantic relations were with prostitutes. And then he paints something like this which is so beautiful and tender and sentimental. It seems like the couple in bed really loves each other—cares about each other. Wakes up happy to look at each other. And I see that love and passion and I wonder how lonely he must have been. I wonder how he could paint something like this without it breaking his heart. Maybe they say artists should create what they know, not because its unbelievable when they extend themselves beyond their experiences, but because when they pull it off with such elegance, it’s so damn unbearable to look at. I hate thinking of Lautrec, wondering about the lovers he created and knowing it was beyond his experience. Creating something that he knows is beautiful and knows he’ll never really understand.
