Unless your tattoos are cut off in anyway by your tail or other props (like a lower back, hip, or side tattoo), I don't think it would be a problem to explain away. Pirates and sailors are pretty notorious for haveing tattoos. You can just explain that whatever the content is it's something you've seen in your travels and really loved, so you wanted a way to be reminded of it/keep it with you. There's always heavy duty concealer if you need a cover up or strategic placement accessories too.

Yes, absolutely! I'm not too familiar with many mermen (maybe @mermaids-and-anchors could help me out) but I've seen a wide range of body types from lanky to large to dad bod to toned. The first few merman that come to mind that might not fit that "King Triton" stereotype are Dan, Christian, and Apollo. If you're self conscious about your belly, there is always the option of a higher wasted tail or coming up with armor based costume pieces to cover what areas you'd like.

Hello! A flowy top with bell shaped sleeves might be a good option. Or you could make armwarmers/sleeves in a color that matches your skin tone and attach fins to that if you want a more fishy look instead of fantasy. Maybe arm bands to cover just the area you're concerned with and decorate them like armor or as fancy jewelery. If anyone else has suggestions, add them on!

Most of the cheaper monofins are marketed towards children; they're going to have tons of safety features and information. The ones I've seen in person are easy to slip your feet in and out of for that exact reason. Try FinFun, The2Tails, SunTails, and the Mermaid + Atlantis fins from Finis.
