My hot take is that if Merlin didn’t love Arthur, the Disir episode would have still gone exactly the same.

Arthur thinking Merlin has spent 3 days in the tavern, meanwhile Merlin has been saving Arthur from the biggest threat to his life so far.
bbc merlin you are so important to me
This fandom has a very selective memory when it comes to any and all things Guinevere. See, the way I remember it, when they had no evidence to prove her innocence, Arthur defended Gwen despite thinking she used magic, because he defined the healing as an act of “kindness and love.” He defended magic to save Gwen.
Why would anyone remember that, though? I mean, it’s not that important. It’s only the first time Arthur ever, onscreen, not only shows sympathy towards magic, but defends it… to Uther, no less. And he does it to save Gwen.

I GOT CSP WORKING ON LINUX have a Merlin doodle to celebrate <3
rest in peace to this diva
It’s always funny to me when I point out how Arthur's reaction to Merlin's magic proved that Merlin was valid in keeping his secret and people are like ‘Arthur has never seen the good of magic. How did you expect him to react?’ As if Gwen, who has ACTUALLY very few moments where magic did her any good, didn’t have the literal response of “I’m pleased” when she figured it out.
Like the example was 5 minutes away guys… you just had to take off the Merthur blinders.
Something else I would have liked to see more of throughout the series is Merlin just using his powers on instinct before he can stop it like when he saved Gaius from that fall.
It would’ve been cool to see Merlin struggling to contain all this power especially at the start of the series while he’s still learning to harness his magic:
Like maybe Arthur throws something at Merlin while half paying attention but Merlin’s magic stops it midflight and he has to quickly unfreeze and take the hit to avoid suspicion
Gwen asks Merlin to pass her the washing but it’s moving before he can even get his hands on it and Merlin has to scramble after it to grab the basket midair
Merlin’s carrying a meal up to the princes chambers and trips, his magic catching him and the tray of food and quickly righting them both, and Merlin glances around to see if anyone noticed
Gaius asks him to light a candle and suddenly every wick in the room is lit before he can even finish his sentence
It’s only after Gaius gives Merlin the spell book that he learns any kind of control, but even then, there would still be moments of panic or excitement that cause his magic to flare on instinct

Came by just to drop this Merthur study I did
it was very "started it. Had a breakdown. Bon Appétit." experience
I had an epiphany whilst brushing my teeth.
ooh ooh this is something we've talked about in the server!! i'm very happy i'm not the only one who sees it!!
“The boy, Merlin, practices magic,” Aredian revealed. All around the court, eyebrows raised, and jaws dropped, and faces paled. Merlin himself froze in place and slowly turned his gaze to Arthur.
Uther did not even try to contain his reaction; he rolled his eyes. “Oh, please,” he scoffed. “That boy is confessing to sorcery every other day. Find a real sorcerer, Aredian, and not a noble fool of a boy with a death wish and far too many suspicious friends.”
Trying a variety of art styles
Edited: This is a scene from the season 4 episode 2?... Probably yeah

Had Arthur not been mortally wounded, his reaction to learning of Merlin’s magic should have been bad actually. Because every time Arthur is given a test of some sort, he has to fail first.
He has to test his preconceptions against the world and learn. He has to be wrong and be taught what right is. Not because he doesn’t know how to do the right thing, not because he doesn’t want to do the right thing, but because his story is one of learning to overcome. And there is no greater obstacle than when we take the world at face value.
Arthur is surrounded by people who benefit from social, economic, and political systems. He benefits from those systems. His entire story is one of repeatedly trying to figure out who to trust only to be betrayed. He trusts the wrong advisors, opinions, peoples, perspectives. But he learns.
He would have killed Merlin and then regretted it. Arthur learns through loss in a way Uther was unable to. He allows himself to be changed, to see the consequences of his actions and try to correct for them.
If Merlin was named Emrys, was called immortal, then it’s because the world understood that it had created a man that had to know failure to understand success. And the greater the loss, the deeper the understanding, and the better the capability for success. He is meant to unite all of Albion. He is meant to be a sword forged in dragon fire. He is only able to succeed once he understands the depth of his failure.
Arthur’s treatment of Merlin, at the most critical point of the story, at the moment where all is revealed, should be a failure. Because Arthur has never operated in any other way. It is the final doubt, the last and strongest echo of his father that must be cast off.
this has probably been noticed before but I just realised that the first line of the show is repeated at the end… evil.
