homemade pasta weaving
the work that I do often feels like I'm building some elaborate gizmo with a little computer inside that will just make a needle point north, when you could in fact just use a compass to point north. and maybe there's something enlightening about the process of using technical system to try to unearth understandings and modes of perception about the environment that we've lost or have been with us for a long time. perhaps the technology is not necessary, but it is a process and a way for us to get reacquainted with our perceptions and understanding of the environment

The discoloration of birds in museum collections can be used to trace the amount of black carbon in the air over time and the effects of environmental policy upon pollution.

that’s really plausible, why don’t we have that? we should do that.

a thought about ceremonies
ceremonies are designed to remind us of what’s important
visual histogram thought
line weights in a drawing (chop up the lines every small increment and find the thickness + orientation, then stack up the tiles to make the histogram) / point cloud intensity (take a snapshot at each pointcloud and arrange those in the histogram)

an impatience with speculation (it is no longer the time) fantasy with negative connotations
Windows
“Windows are, in this sense, a powerful existential tool: a patch of the world, arbitrarily framed, from which we are physically isolated. The only thing you can do is look. You have no influence over what you will see. Your brain is forced to make drama out of whatever happens to appear. Boring things become strange. A blob of mist balances on top of a mountain; leafless trees contort themselves in slow-motion interpretive dance; heavy raindrops make the puddles boil. These things are a tiny taste of the bigness of the world. They were there before you looked; they will be there after you go. None of it depends on you.”
- Sam Anderson, The New York Times
Useless Machine
“When I reach over to flick the switch on my Useless Machine and then watch it rouse itself, with patient defiance, to switch itself off again, I wonder whether this is what it might mean for a technology to be truly intelligent: to receive an order and to respond by politely but firmly declining to follow it.”
- Mark O’Connell, The New York Times

The French theorist Henri de Saint-Simon proposed a triumvirate in which 'the artist’s role was to envision the future of society, while the scientist would analyze the feasibility of visionary ideas, and the industrialist would devise administrative techniques for putting them into practice.'

And what a great life it would be if, every morning, every object in the house could be made anew by our hands, could “issue” from our hands.
