You can almost smell the smoke in this photograph of a Stuka over Stalingrad. The Ju-87 had already earned its reputation in Poland and France, but the Eastern Front was a different beast entirely. Mud, snow, primitive airfields, and relentless flying took their toll. Look closely at this one. The wheel spats are gone! Stuka crews operating in Russia often ditched them because they could quickly become packed with mud and debris. Not exactly glamorous, but very Eastern Front 😁
