i feel like the youth should be reminded that the point of shipping is not for a ship to become canon. the point of shipping is to collect all the canon crumbs like starved mice, run away cackling and make some fun little scenarios with them just for the hell of it.
And we're back with another fic (and another incredible artwork by Jane). I just had to, because the idea of Cassian sporting a mustache would not let me go, and when the amazing @janearts drew one in a blue-green tartan (wink wink), I HAD to. So, enjoy a modern au cabin fic, with this lovely visual, full of my favorite tropes. Expect shenanigans, arguing, sexual tension, Nessian being dumb. All of the good stuff! Enjoy!

The sun bleeds orange through the pines when Nesta finally finds what she hopes might be the right road. By then all she has are Feyreās directions, scrawled in purple gel pen on the back of a Starbucks cup sleeve, because her sister apparently still believes in whimsy even when Nesta feels like her world is ending. The GPS gave up somewhere past the state line, leaving her squinting at the looping handwriting, holding the sleeve at different angles to read the impossible combination of brown and shiny purple in better light, the overwhelming urge to murder Feyre growing stronger by the minute.
Left where the asphalt ends. Then it gets tricky.
Tricky had been an understatement. The roads have deteriorated from highway to the scenery route to something that barely qualifies as maintained.
Right at the boulder that looks like a sleeping bear. If you hit the creek, youāve gone too far and youāll have to return until thereās a fork in the road.
The drive was supposed to take five hours, but itās taken her almost the entire day. Not even her bout of insomnia could drag her out of bed early enough to beat morning traffic. She hasnāt been able to do much of anything efficiently, truly, ever since the funeral three weeks ago. Sheās also not used to driving long distances alone. She hasnāt needed to, living in a city where everything is a subway ride away. And on the rare occasion that she did embark on such an undertaking, she never used to go alone. Her father would come with her on trips like this, before things went to shit. He was always content to sit in the passenger seat with his crossword puzzle, occasionally reading clues aloud until she solved them for him, even though she knew he could almost always solve them himself. But thatās all past tense. Sheāll never go on trips like that again, because sheās part of the dead-dad-club now. This drive has been the longest stretch of uninterrupted time sheās had with her own thoughts in three weeks. Sheād made a playlist in an attempt to drown out her own racing brain, but after the second repeat sheād turned it off.
Another reason sheās quickly losing daylight is because she made so many coffee stops her back teeth appear to be floating. Sheād stopped at rest areas, drinking terrible coffee from vending machines and taking bathroom breaks in an endless cycle, each gas station bathroom more depressing than the last, with its flickering lights and paper towel dispensers that wheeze out single squares. Sheād sit in her car in desolate parking lots trying to remember why she thought this was a good idea. The question would be answered by Feyreās voice in her head every single time. You need to get away, clear your head a little. Just for a weekend. Rhys has this cabin, which used to be his momās cousinās. Itās very quiet and remote, somewhere upstate near the mountains. Itāll be good for you, having some time to yourself.
Time to herself. To do what? Fall apart where no one can see? Finally scream the way her body has been demanding for three weeks? Be alone without Elain asking if sheās eaten, or Feyreās worried eyes following her from room to room?
Hmmmm anyway what about the opposite of Devoted Loyal Noble Knight. What about Knight that is Chained to his Duty like a Rabid Dog in a Cage. What about Knight that fucking Loathes The King but is bound by a magic oath that prohibits him abandoning his post or harming his liege. Knight that feigns subservience while boiling with bloodlust. Knight who finds every innocuous form of disobedience and rebellion he can within the limits of his Oath. Knight who decides, after a virtuous little Consort is betrothed to the King and sent to the Palace, he'll make it his mission to corrupt and ruin the Consort with filthy, feral seduction. Fucking them over and over and over again while the King is none the wiser, in every room in the Palace, on the throne, in the King's bed, always an inch away from getting caught.

I loved The Ritual by Adam Nevil so much it's honestly one of my fav folk horror book and I'm always sad because there's so little content on this genre. I also watched the movie and was kinda sad when they changed the ending (Fenris was one of my fav charaxters in the book) and alot of the way the characters interacted. However that being said I did really like the movie (it scared the shit out of me) especially the design of Moder. I really like the art btw.
Okay here is a snippet of the next chapter of It's Such Good Parenting (and Politics)
Her hands reached out the straighten the fabric where it had folded in across his chest. Mainly for something to do. This was also her first time being around all the leaders of Pyrthian as well.
This close Nesta had to tilt her head up to look at his face. While tall for a female Cassian had grown a head or so taller than her. Even with the small heels she wore. The sunburst of gold around his irises consumed most of the greens. It was fascinating watching his eyes change colors. Almost as if he had his own thread of magic woven in him trying to escape. It caused something to tighten in Nestaās chest.
Cassianās wings fluttered behind him as if trying to settle. It was harder to see on him, but Nesta thought she saw red flush across his cheeks. āThey donāt fit right.ā He turned his eyes away from her looking clear over her head out the window she had previously been starting at.
āThey fit fine you are just use to running around shirtless.ā Nesta rolled her eyes before stepping away from him. Heat flooding her own cheeks while her heart pounded in her ears. He had always found a reason to take off his shirt, mostly because he rolled around in the mud like an animal. Now it was because he had started to develop the muscles the other warriors had. He was a showoff at his core.
āI have never heard anyone complain before.ā Cocky smirk firmly in place even as he shifted his shoulders back, the fabric stretching across his chest with each movement.
āAnd how could you hear anything under that mess of curls and massive ego.ā Said curls had been bushed and braided back in traditional Illyrians designs. The rest hung around his shoulders. The top half of his hair twisted into a top knot while the rest fell past his shoulder. Another annoying feature was his ridicules hair, thick and long and despite being connected to the most aggravating male it always smelled good. Rosemary and mint.
āAre you both ready? The welcome ball will start soon.ā Her aunt walked into the room in a gown that was all Day Court. Dark purple panels edged in gold. As high collar and long sleeves. She looked exactly like the kind of High Lady Nesta hoped to be. Posed, elegant and intimidating.
āAfter you.ā Cassian folded himself into a mocking bow while offering his arm. It was going to be a very long week.
