Michael Leonard was a brilliantly talented and wildly prolific artist ( painting, drawing, and photography.) His overriding aesthetic was homoeroticism. In 1977 he did the color pencil illustrations for the worldwide best selling book, "The Joy of Gay Sex" - the first book to ever present same-sex romantic sexuality in a normal and acceptable manner. He was very successful in the non-homoerotic arena publishing works in all manner of books, magazines, and advertisements. He was also a successful portrait and still-life painter who had numerous exhibits. In 1985 Queen Elizabeth II asked him to paint a formal portrait of her. When Buckingham Palace first contacted him he declined feeling he wasn't an artist of enough note to paint Her Majesty's portrait. But, after a few days of reconsidering, he agreed to do it though requesting that it not be formal - no jewels, tiaras, or robes. Just her in a relaxed pose.
