MeMe: Memphis Meet-Up

Hang in there everyone.  I got a few kik messages from people saying they Tumblr messaged me that they were coming, but thanks to Hungry, Hungry Tumblr….I never received the messages.  So if you did not tell me another way, only through Tumblr that you were coming, there is a chance I did not get your message. 

I know that Les set up a sign up on twitter for the group.  Please sign up if you are coming, or kik me shauna_says or email [email protected].  I’m sure if you have told another local Memphian, they will let us know too.  

This isn’t a big event, but we will have fun!  We are all looking forward to this and can’t wait to see you!

Please also hang in there, I have always finished off trimesters with the ability to pass a class still, even if I received a zero on my final and thought I would be able to put more time into this this last week. After last night’s test, I’m no longer in this position.

 Thank you for everyone else that is stepping up and helping out, due to my lack of time now. 

I’m just about finished finalizing everything.  I know it’s less than a month away from now…but give me some slack, please!  

I will give you a hint of some plans.

Friday we will be meeting downtown at The Flying Saucer.  Then The Absinthe Room will be the following “meet up” area…but feel free to check out any blues clubs/dance clubs while on Beale. 

The Absinthe Room is just a chill place.  There is no cover to get in and it is filled with couches and pool tables if I remember correctly.  I know it was where people went at the last Memphis Meet UP.

Saturday plans…Sun records for those who want to go…there are plenty of other places to tour in the Memphis area, I will give you a list.  This is just a favorite of many. Then BBQ for lunch, most likely Central.  Meeting back on Beale for another night of fun. 

This is the basic plan.  The hotel that most of us locals are going to be staying at is the Econolodge downtown.  Last meet up people took care of their own lodging. I think most of the people that came last time had family/friends in town or were from here.  So I’m kind of following along that theme and will move on to better, fancier plans later, if this meet up continues to grow.

How many people in need of a hotel while they are here?  Locals, please speak up and let me (Shauna.  pandemiclaughter) know if you were wanting a hotel, or just planning on crashing at your own place

Aug 10-12.  I promise more in stone plans during my break on July 4th time period!

I know a few of you have given me pretty solid yes replies.  But all of those who were going to "try" to come, you know we are wanting to see you!  We are looking forward to a great time.  So please send me a yes if you are coming, even if you have before.

Aug 10 Meeting up at our house for good ol' home cooking BBQ/pot luck. (I would love to add crawfish boil to the line up of food too!) We do have room for people to stay.  The kids will be gone, so we have 3 extra bedrooms, with 5 extra beds, couches--(worried about drinking/driving.)  Let us know if you want to crash!

Aug 11--We'll serve breakfast to all of those who decided to stay the night/come back for breakfast.

Afternoon--everyone can split up how they want for site seeing and/or eating again. I will send out some great places to see and eat at.

700 Meet down town, most likely Beale St  for dinner and fun through the night. 

Aug 12  Brunch and the Zoo

There is no drinking allowed in the campsite I found.  So Cullen and I were thinking that will probably not do too well.  The authorities did come scan our campsites while we were camping. 

Next thought is getting one hotel downtown and getting rooms booked so we can all be close and hopefully use one of their rooms for a Friday evening potluck.  If I can't get find a place to meet for this potluck, I am realizing I might have to scratch that idea and you won't be able to taste all the nom, but Memphis isn't lacking in places to eat good food....it isn't called the Garden of Eatin' for nothing.

If you are definitely coming, please let me know. If you are wanting to and trying to, please let me know too.  If it is a small crowd like it's been in the past, I know everyone just made their own hotel arrangements.  I will try and get an itinerary of fun things to do within the next few weeks.  

There is a camp ground in Shelby Forest that has an air conditioned meeting hall and kitchen.  The bunk houses around it are not air-conditioned, but they have showers and the whole place can sleep up to 140 people, the smaller site sleeps up to 100 people and one of them has a swimming pool too. The price is quite low compared to every other place I have looked up.  I doubt many people would want to sleep there, but there might be some and who knows--it would be great to have a place to stay if people happened to drink a bit more than they should if they were going to drive. 

I can not book it until June 1st all those bookings before June 1st have to book for at least 5 nights and that is too much.  The lady I talked to said August usually didn't fill up, because school starts so early. So I'm crossing my fingers that we will get this place.  

There were a lot of people suggesting meeting outside for the MEME Aug 10-12.  My fear of this is the weather.  I don't trust that there won't be a heat index of 130F or raining, both would possibly make it quite miserable.  I'm still searching places and taking any suggestions.  If you really don't mind suffering the weather, let it be known.  If you have a suggestion, please let that be known too.

Current ideas:

Friday Aug 10--Southern Style pot luck with BBQ, more good food, alcohol and music.

Saturday---multiple day time locations to possibly meet up and meeting up downtown in the evening.

Sunday--one last meet up.  

Aug. 10-12 we'll be eating barbecue, drinking beer and roasting! But damn, it's going to be fun!
