OH BOY, HERE WE GO!
City Council of Darkness episode 1
she is so hot let’s all die
Your hatred against hopepunk is truly inspiring i remember your earlier posts about it
I've been on it for years. I was on it when that post reached me shortly after it was made. I will be on it when all memory of that post ozymandias' out of the collective conscious
at the core I'm just viscerally repulsed by any idea that can be summed up as "art today is degenerate and rude, so what if the REAL subversive narratives are the ones that dare to be comfortable to me" and hopepunk/cottagecore were very pervasive forms of this
while I understand the impulse to view violence and tragedy as easy to write, it requires a solipsistic view of the world where art is conjured up and presented to you, to make you feel things, to harvest your opinion of it and correct the mistakes of individual voice. people write responses to the world they live in
the urge to view optimism and pessimism as moral virtues with different degrees of ease based on the quantity of them you see around is, fundamentally, an urge to believe that everything which is written was written for you by people who share your inner world, speaking back like desynced reflections of you with their own mouths, who ought to be set on the course of making what you need, because it's what you all need
when the bdsm etiquette is bad and the kink is under-negotiated and the communication is poor and the bad behaviour isn’t justified and the trauma isn’t unpacked and the identities aren’t defined in tumblrspeak and the dialogue isn’t therapised and the bodies don’t have sixpacks and the teeth aren’t straight and the faces have acne and the scalps have dandruff and the outfits aren’t from pinterest and the homophobia is period-typical and the slang isn’t americanised and the sex isn’t satisfying and the happy ending isn’t married w/kids
If I see one more lukewarm take about how Shane is the stereotypical "submissive Asian" I'll fight someone that boy is the CAPTAIN as a teenager he is a LANDLORD he had a much bigger portfolio than Ilya, he knows what he likes and goes after it. He'll have Ilya on his knees begging to fuck Shane.
hmm ok i'm gonna say something here that i might be wrong or ignorant about, but i will try to say it thoughtfully and with the knowledge that i might be way off base. i think this is maybe partly aligned with what you are saying/noticing here, but maybe also branches off somewhere different? idk but ok here is the thought: i sometimes get a little bit uncomfortable with the way this fandom talks about asian stereotypes re: shane. i think we can ALL acknowledge that shane's racial identity is not well handled in the book. i am not asian and so may be less attuned to microaggressions that asian readers might sense in the books, but even as a white person reading HR, i was like oh huh wow... reid seems fundamentally incurious about what it would be like to be a biracial character in an overwhelmingly white sport, within a sports culture that ranges from deeply inhospitable to deeply hostile to athletes of color. i'm not looking for popular romance novels to do deep dive critical race theory analyses or anything, but like, i don't recall there being a SINGLE mention of shane's racial identity impacting his lived experience in any way. i also have seen other readers point out that the classic 'One Guy is BIG and BEEFY and One Guy is SMOL and DAINTY' romance novel takes on problematic undertones when applied to a character of east asian descent, given the loooong and racist cultural history of popular media emasculating or desexualizing east asian men. so i think all of those are extremely fair critiques to level at the source material, and to ask fan readers and writers to be aware of and thoughtful about in the way they headcanon, write fic, etc.
that saiiiiiiid i think sometimes people can overcorrect a bit? and steer too far into like... implying that it's inherently racist or problematic for a biracial asian character to enjoy bottoming, or insisting that we have to always headcanon shane as Rich and Powerful and 1000% In Charge at all times... in a way that i think can sort of end up being like... idk. 'lightly dehumanizing' feels like too strong a phrase, but i do think that it risks flattening shane again, just in the opposite direction.
like if we look at an example where racial identity doesn't factor in as strongly: part of the reason i personally don't find Cold Mean Dom Ilya compelling is that i think it flattens so many other aspects of his personality that shine through in the show and in connor storrie's depiction of the character. yes ilya can be cold or "mean" or Coolly In Charge during sex, but we also see him being playful, goofy, obnoxious, attentive, gentle, responsive, scared of being vulnerable with his partner, longing for closeness and affection, and so on and so forth. it can be yummy to experiment with Mean Dom Ilya headcanons, but i don't want to live there all the time, just because i feel like that characterization elides these other parts of ilya that make him feel like so complex and relatable and real. he feels real to me because he's not just a mean dom... he's sometimes a mean dom and he's often all of these other things at the same time. and the whole package taken together is what makes him feel like a complicated person with messy desires and unrealized emotional needs - ie, a human being.

no lol. next question
#‘can shadow on the wall change the material conditions in the cave’ type of question
no nuance: are you friends with your cousins?
yes
no
cousinless
ok i’m going to try to put this together but it might make no sense. i think that shane is a believer in institutions. he’s bought into the meritocracy lie to an extent. he believes that perseverance is rewarded and that hard work pays off, because he has to believe this to keep going. he believes that he, by his skill and dedication, is owed, and if he doesn’t get what he is owed then that may be a bias in the institution but it’s not a flaw in the basic premise, which is that it is possible to deserve and earn the life he wants.
and i think this also ties into how he relates to ilya and his sort of difficulty understanding ilya’s trauma and mindset, because to ilya, there is no such thing as justice. the world is a random chaotic and cruel place. the things that happen just happen and there is no structure or moral argument to take away from them. suffering is the only constant.
and i think this is the stone blocking the path of shane understanding ilya, because to understand him, like to truly meet him where he’s at, shane would have to acknowledge that actually, bad things just happen. there isn’t a reasoning behind it. there is no meaning to it. shane has built his life on the idea that being good will keep him safe, and ilya calls that whole thing into question. it makes sense to me how hard shane resists fully understanding ilya’s mindset, because if he were to do that it would also undo parts of shane that shane is reliant on to keep going.

ppl like to make fun of shane for how bad at sexting he is but truly this is what it felt like watching ilya repeatedly texting shane about how badly he wants to fuck him for two full years while shane went hehehe...... ✔️read at 2:04 am
Meanwhile you know this is how Ilya starts texting once they’re actually dating
Do you think if Ilya could appear to his former sad childhood self to reassure him in the dark isolated times of his childhood he would be like “It’s okay little me, one day you will have a loving family and true happiness just be brave”. I don’t.
I think he would say “it’s okay f-slur, we end up locking down a fucking underwear model who can come from sucking cock never kill yourself”.
