Night In the Woods Cosplay Tutorial Pt. 1 - The Face!
Hi Everyone! A bunch of kind people have said they’ve enjoyed my Night In The Woods cosplay and I’ve gotten a lot of questions from really cool people who want to make their own!!! I have a TON of progress pics on my phone so I wanted to make a tutorial! I hope this is useful! If any part of this is helpful to you in your cosplay, shoutouts are always appreciated, but not necessary, I’d love to see what you make! And please make sure to give the NITW devs your love, and try out the game if you haven’t already!
Here we go! This tutorial will be broken up into 4 parts. The first part is the FACE!
The face is made out of Foam Board. I used a 20x30 sheet, 3/16th inch thickness. Color doesn’t matter. Draw out the shape you want! I recommend using IN-GAME images for reference because a lot of the NITW promotional material on websites and banners uses pretty different head shapes!
Cut it out! One of those handheld box cutters should work well. If the head is bigger than your foam board (for example, if you have a giant alligator snout) these may need to be in multiple pieces, so just tape or glue them together.
The head is covered in fabric. I used some anti-pill fleece from the craft store. Cut out a head shaped piece of fabric that’s a little bit bigger than your head, wrap the edges around and glue to the back. I didn’t put any glue on the fabric on the front of the face, because I was worried about lumps, but if you have a good way to do it so that it stays nice and smooth, go for it!
Now map out where you want all of your eyes and stuff to go! I made some paper eyes/whiskers. It looks nice but I can’t see out of it yet. XD I held the eyes down with a little double-stick tape so they won’t slide around during the next step.
Cutting out the eyes is a little tricky because you’re cutting through both the fabric and the foam board and you don’t want to make the fabric all ragged. I recommend tracing around the paper eyes onto the fabric with something very faint, or by doing a light cut with an X-acto knife. Then remove the paper eyes and with a small pair of scissors, gently cut out the eyes from the fabric starting from the middle, kind of like this.
Once the fabric is cut out you can then basically cut through the foam board in a similar way. Be careful not to stretch the fabric too much or put too much pressure on the thin parts of the foam board (like between Mae’s nightmare eyes!) You should now have some stuff that looks roughly like this!! Hooray!
You can also try cutting out the eyes BEFORE you put the fabric on if you want! I haven’t tried that but maybe it works better! :D
