I wish I didn’t need external validation as my breath to keep me alive
Be the sound of your thoughts and then your spirit, the tongue is a mere boneless flesh.
For just how the tongue flutters inside the mouth, so shall you lose the clarity of your thoughts and beauty of your spirit fluttering in words. I, a stutter, feels the impeding flutter well.
The Greatest Piece of Art
I wanted to make the greatest piece of art so I bought a canvas and sat in front of it every day.
I drew, replaced the canvas, drew, replaced the canvas, drew, replaced the canvas, again.
Because my heart told me that I was capable of more, while at the same time telling me that I’m shit.
So I kept at it until nothing satisfied me; until nothing seemed to fit.
Sometimes we are kinder to the art that isn’t ours than the one that we have made. Because judging beauty is futile unless, of course, it’s ours.
Unless it’s our canvas, our face, our poetry, our page, our body, our waist.
I replaced those canvases not because they were bad. They were pretty in a way creation hadn’t been before.
I threw them away because they were vulnerable like me. Because they were exactly who I was, not who I wanted to be.
A Room of My Own
On some days I am scared to have a room of my own.
For Woolf’s sake, I must make clear that the fault lies entirely with the occupant.
In this room, I was meant to thrive, and now that I haven’t, the room has become a sorry reminder.
In this room, there are countless thesauruses with countless words, yet not one describes my loneliness.
Not one explains that I wish to write but can’t because my anxiety won’t let me.
Not one word of use, instead all I find is imagery.
A bunch of glasses that used to be full, are now half-empty, and so are sad.
A half-barred door that lets too much in, of the sun, of the rain as well.
In this room, despite this room, Judith Shakespeare meets a sorry fate.
In this room, poems seldom bloom. For my heart carries a foreign weight.
This poem is an exercise in existence;
A waiting for a coming together.
In this poem, I will only curl my toes
One at a time,
And you will silently watch
The unfurling of the dewy daybreak.
Spare some time to linger
While I put the kettle on,
For a fleeting flutter in your poetic memory.
Sit with pain a while.
Let it rest on the side chair
While you look out the window
With a tongue sticking out.
Now dip your little finger in the cup.
Lukewarm sadness floats on the surface.
Brown. Bitter. Flaky.
Pull it out. Hang it from the rim.
Let its shadow rest on your upper lip
As you gulp life down and hope to be
A break in broken history.

Coming Spring
The tree and its new stump
Covered in a cotton cloud
And the horizon plastered around
In a zigzag spirit —
An embrace cast with kindness.
Everything holds itself
And other things
And we heal
For the coming spring.
Everyone talks about an inner child. I have an inner older lady who says inappropriate things, judges everyone and wants to be in bed by 8pm.
I'm not here
I'm not listening
I'm in my head
And I'm spinning
All the months are crude experiments, out of which the perfect September is made.
Let me take these worries from your soul and turn them into wings on your back. Then we'll see how much of you is angel and you'll finally know how beautiful you really are.

If there is someone else for you now, then why do you linger here? We've said our goodbyes, but your eyes won't let me go.
I see it on your face, everything you feel for me. My name still written there a trail in permanent ink-a transcript of your heart.
I believe there is penance in yearning. There is poverty in giving too much of your heart. When your desire for another is not returned in equal measure-nothing in the world could compensate for the shortfall. Sometimes the loneliest place to be is in love.
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for the evening calm, I'm waiting for our time, the oblique light, this pause between day and night. Peace will come, surely. But I can imagine no other peace than that of our two bodies bound together, of our gaze given over to each other - I have no other homeland but you.
When I first met you I thought there was no way I could ever fall for you, people say when you love someone you just love them, you don't have reasons for that...but if someone ever asks me, "why him?" I would literally go ahead and read an entire book about why not anyone else but him. I remember the day I did something really good and no one hyped me up, but jeez there you were with my favourite chocolates in your hands, running towards me funnily, with your arms open for me to wraparound myself..with that stupid smile of yours saying, "I toh told you, you'll win but you were the one who never believed me" it stuck to me. Those words, those chocolates, that smile and that feeling of love, in that moment my heart giggled and murmured, "You. Are.In. Love." But how could I be in love with him? He's so weird, kept telling my brain to my heart but all my heart could think of was that hug of yours and how much I didn't want it to end. So yes, if someone tells me to talk about love, I'll tell them about you and millions of reasons why it's always been just you through bests and worsts, through rains and storms, through smiles and tears. It's always been you. I know, it's too late now and I probably am not even going to send this to you now but I don't know some part of my heart says you'll find this one day and if you do, know that I'd still probably would be in love with you.
Does it make you crazy? To think he saw you-his eyes passed over you and if only there had been some small mishap in that pivotal moment. A spilled drink, a stumble through the door-his hand reaching out to steady you and it would have happened. A whole new world would have opened up like a vortex to swallow you both into blissful delirium. But you turned away, out of shyness or indecision and by the time you turned back, he was gone.
How do you explain it without sounding unsound? That click you felt when your eyes met his, like the switch of a train track, transporting you for one miraculous moment, to what might have been.
Then reality intervenes and with a shake of your head, you tell yourself to stop chasing shadows. But I can tell you now that click you felt, it was real and you must not ignore it. For it is the sound of your fate beckoning. It is the voice of your destiny calling. Sometimes it only calls once.

We are writers,
We don't cry,
We bleed on paper
In words we die
Tears are written
In the lines hidden
Sometimes unknown with
The pain we own.

Phir mahobbat ko hee maamuli samjhte hai
