āOver the years I'd lodged him in the permanent past, my pluperfect lover, put him on ice, stuffed him with memories and mothballs like a hunted ornament confabulating with the ghost of all my evenings. I'd dust him off from time to time and then put him back on the mantelpiece. He no longer belonged to earth or to life. All I was likely to discover at this point wasn't just how distant were the paths we'd taken, it was the measure of loss that was going to strike me--a loss I didn't mind thinking about in abstract terms but which would hurt when stared at in the face, the way nostalgia hurts long after we've stopped thinking of things we lost and may never have cared for.ā ā AndrĆ© Aciman, Call Me by Your Name
Call Me by Your Name - A Personal Journey
January 23, 2017, a casual visit to the website, The Daily Beast and a dispatch from the Sundance Film Festival which I was only marginally aware was even underway.Ā Writer Kevin Fallon gives us this article:
Ā āCall Me by Your Nameā: The Sexy, Poignant Gay Love Story Turning All of Sundance OnĀ
I notice Armie Hammer first, the actor I remembered from The Social Network and pretty much nothing else (although I knew he was a minor celebrity). We get two pictures to go with the article.
I read the article, curious about the book and the French actor playing Elio, thinking heās some European kid (a la Adele Exarchopoulos). A quick visit to IMDb and, holy shit, heās the kid from Homeland, the smug son of the Vice President who gets blown up in Season 2.
I look further, who is Timothee Chalamet? He was the son in Interstellar.Ā Oh yeah, there was a son in Interstellar, I had forgotten.
Very interesting article and being a gay of a certain age, I was a little surprised I had not heard of the book.Ā So, I download it from Amazon to my Kindle and start to read.Ā At first, Iām not all that immersed, the opening feels like a lot of gay literature Iāve read in the past - a summer visitor, a crush, yada, yada, but then around fifteen pages in, Iām getting hooked.Ā Ā
Perhaps it started right then...
Andre Aciman, who is this guy?Ā First novel, a professor. He teaches the history of literary theory and the works of Marcel Proust.
Wait...heās straight!?!
That a straight man could reach deep into the mind and memory of a man who was emotionally shattered by his seventeenth summer, and a queer kid at that. I finishedĀ āIf Not Later, When?ā on the first night, knowing something must be coming. I woke up early the next morning.Ā āMonetās Bermā, interesting. I call in sick, I finish the book before noon. I am dumbstruck, overwhelmed by the prose and the pain and longing of Elio Perlman.Ā I see myself in him, I see myself in Oliver, I yearn to hear the words that Professor Perlman gifts his only child. I think about my own journey from the closet in the early 90ā²s and the fear and self-loathing that had to be overcome. I contemplate my love life. Have I ever felt something as powerful as Elio? No, I cannot say I have.
Okay, now Iām invested.
Now Iām looking for everything I can find. Twitter comments, early reviews, release schedules. I breathlessly tell my co-workers about this movie that premiered at Sundance and the book that blew my mind (by this point Iām halfway through the novel a second time).Ā
āArmie Hammer plays a gay guy?āĀ
Yes, isnāt it exciting?Ā The kid is supposed to be really good.Ā He was on Homeland.Ā He went to the Fame school in NYC.Ā My IMDb search finds his 2016 movie Miss Stevens, I find it on Netflix. Heās brilliant, so real, so alive. His Death Of A Salesman monologue knocks me on my ass.Ā I watch it again. And again.
Weāre getting obsessed.
I look up the director, Luca Guadanigno. I think Iāve heard of him. Never seen his work. So I watch it.Ā First up, I Am Love. Tilda Swinton, always a fan (especially in Michael Clayton). Its in Italian, subtitles, no problem. One of my all time favorite movies is The Best Of Youth, a six hour Italian family epic that I watch at least once a year (check it out, please).Ā Gorgeous scenery, very sexy. Is this what Call Me By Your Name is going to look like? God, I hope so.
Next up, A Bigger Splash. Tilda again, wicked. A rock star. Of course!Ā Ralph Fiennes and Matthias Schoenaerts naked. Iām all in. Dakota Johnson. Ok, fine. Great music, great ride, weird ending, but ok, its European. Is THIS what Call Me By Your Name is going to look like?Ā Curiouser and curiouser.
By now Iāve read the book three times.Ā Iām reading every review I can find of the novel on GoodReads, adding my own, noticing Andre Aciman has answered a few questions about the book in the comments, fascinating.Ā I figure out where the book is set and spend a good afternoon on Google Earth following the twisting roads around Bordighera, Italy. Its near San Remo. Iāve heard of that place.
Thereās no choice left. I must read this novel one more time in the town where it is set.Ā I was born in the mid-1960ā²s, I have never been to Europe.Ā I plan an itinerary and take the plunge. In early July,Ā vado a Roma - Florence - San Remo - Bordighera - Cinque Terre - back to Rome.Ā I will look for Monetās Berm! I will get drunk and wander down Via di Santa Maria DellāAnima where Elio and Oliver kiss for one of the last times.Ā Really kiss.Ā
In the meantime, I follow the trajectory of the film. It premieres at Berlinale (and strongly consider giving up on my Italy trip to go to Berlin instead).Ā I become Twitter friends with a small group that is also eagerly following the film, anticipating its release. We finally learn its coming in...October!? So far away!
But wait, thereās a clip thatās been released!Ā Its the scene where Oliver rubs Elioās shoulder in front of all his friends and almost collapses from confusion and desire. Tennis in the book.Ā Volleyball in the movie. Thatās ok, I hear they changed the location anyway. Adaptations require compromise.
Fuck, does that kid look young.Ā Hope it doesnāt become a thing. Oh well, it probably wonāt.Ā My desire to see this film is becoming almost unbearable and thereās nothing coming, no leaks, no hints, only the reviews from the few festivals it has shown at.Ā I live in the world of the book.Ā I go to Italy at the beginning of August.
Its my own personal Eat, Gay, Love. I see everything, I spare no expense when I eat, I rent an Alpha Romeo and drive 150 kmh on lāautostrada. Its wild.Ā The bulk of my trip is spent in San Remo, a short bus ride to Bordighera. I wander the streets of Acimanās favorite place in the world, loving the slow pace (its a Sunday) and the architecture and the food.Ā I find the beach and despite a few raindrops, relax and read as much of the novel as I can.Ā I look to the hills and wonder where Monetās Berm might be (I never find it, sadly), which hillsides they whistled along on their bicycles.Ā Where isĀ āTo die forā?Ā Ā
A few pics from B
Is this the movie theatre that Oliver indulged Professor Perlman in helping get Elio out of the villa instead of moping around.
The beach in Bordighera. Is this where Oliver and Elio jogged in the morning?
The train station in Bordighera. Is this where Oliver and Elio left from for their trip to Rome?
The vacation ends, a wonderful time. By this point, I had even been studying the Italian language for six months (I am still studying with great joy).Ā Ā
Life returns to normal. I continue looking for morsels. By now, we have the clip where Elio meets Oliver for the first time.Ā We get a better look at Professor Perlman and his wife, Annella.
Good news, the movie is going to be at the Toronto International Film Festival.Ā I work in the industry, I know this is maybe not the flashiest festival in the world, but it really is the most important.Ā This is where Oscar season begins.Ā Canāt wait to see how it is received.
Meanwhile, Timothee Chalamet puts out a cryptic tweet that sends Film Twitter into a frenzy.Ā A few minutes later, we get this...
Holy shit. Its beautiful. Thereās something loving and defiant in the pose. Aspirational. Nothing but blue sky. The sky is the limit. The world is ours. Within minutes, it becomes the wallpaper on thousands of mobile devices. God, I love the fandom, I donāt give a shit if Iām too old for it. This movie is going to really matter to me.
And then another milestone. We know its coming, August 1. Kyle Buchanan from Vulture is first up,Ā āOh boy, do we have a treat for you this morning!ā Wow, look at this still at the top of the article.
The trailer.Ā Ravel. Bicycles. Sufjan. Later.Ā āCall me by your name and Iāll call you by mine...āĀ Ā It trends on Twitter. Unbelievable. The trailer is fucking gorgeous.Ā The version on the Sony Pictures Classics YouTube page is now over 8 million views. Comments are gratefully disabled.
Fall arrives. People are starting to see the film. It premieres at TIFF.Ā Armie is there, Luca is there. Theyāre signing autographs, talking to the media.Ā Where is Timothee.Ā Oh, he is coming.Ā He has been waiting for this moment as much as we have.Ā The writing is now on the wall.Ā This movie is going to make him a star.Ā He rises to the challenge.
Weāve already marveled at the purple Berluti jacket in Berlin, but you sensed he was still a little overwhelmed by the process.Ā Now he is ready. Heās still self-effacing and geeking out, but heās learning how to talk about the movie, about himself, about his friendship with Armie, his admiration for Stuhlbarg, his awe of Luca.Ā
Call Me By Your Name is a monster hit at TIFF.Ā Out of competition and in one of the smaller venues, it still manages a top three placement in the audience awards. One senses that awards are in the cards...time will tell.
I see that the movie is rolling out to other film festivals. New York, L.A., more. Wait...its playing the Calgary Film Festival??Ā Does that mean...is there a possibility...OMG its going to play the Vancouver International Film Festival!Ā Its coming to my town.Ā Ā
Thursday October 5. I mark it on my calendar, buy a pass for the entire film festival, ensure I am going to be at all three screenings. And I wait.
Meanwhile the reviews keep coming and they are just spectacular. They emphasize the humanism of the film, the unbelievable way that Luca Guadanigno captured first love on screen, one of the most immersive film experiences of the year, a gift to the LGBT community.Ā
The night finally arrives.Ā My co-workers literally line up to wish me luck (and are probably secretly hoping this will break my fever and Iāll stop talking about it every day - sadly, that is not to be).Ā My bestie, Linda, and I go together.Ā I warn those around me not to leave during the end credits, Iāve read enough to know that this is a vital part of the film.
Credits...
Hallelujah Junction.Ā āLāusurpatuerā.Ā Ā āI can show you aroundā.Ā Ā āArroganteā.Ā It just keeps coming, unfurling, two hours and twelve glorious minutes.Ā I know whatās coming. I know there are changes from the book. Iām surprised by a few (Elio seems much more shy in the book, in the movie he seems almost like a cool kid).Ā Oliver...sigh.Ā They say goodbye in Clusone.Ā Professor Perlman gives his son advice.Ā Hannukah. Oliver calls.Ā Married?Ā Ā āThey know about usā.
āElio, Elio, Elio, Elio...ā
āOliver.Ā I remember everythingā.
The fireplace.
The end.
Iām numb.Ā I surprise myself by not crying in the theater at all.Ā Iām definitely moved, but no tears. Linda gives me a ride home. No sooner do we get in her vehicle and I break down.Ā Like, really break down.Ā Iām almost inconsolable for five minutes, ten months of anticipation culminates in a glorious film experience that I know will re-live (and have) time and time again.Ā Ā
The movie opens in Los Angeles and New York on November 24. It breaks records for opening weekend box office numbers, but knowing the release trajectory and the success history of Sony Pictures Classics, the early numbers might be front loaded.Ā Hundreds of other fanatics and the curious diving in to see what the hype is all about.Ā Ā
And so here we are a year and a bit later. The fans have seen the movie mutliple times (in theatres, in screeners, in leaks). There is the usual backlash, the second guessing of the release strategy, the lack of recognition in the televised awards shows (although the movie has almost universal acclaim and has been rewarded mightily along the way).Ā Ā
The last stop before the official DVD/Blu-Ray release is the Oscars on Sunday night.Ā Four nominations.Ā Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Song and Actor.Ā We all know which one we want the most.Ā We all know which one weāre going to get.Ā Ā
No matter what happens on Sunday night, no matter what has come and gone, the box office, the release strategy, the narrative about age gaps and queer representation, none of it means a thing when you can almost any time sit back and read the book or put on the movie, listen to the church bells, the buzzing flies, the high pitched laugh of Professor Perlman, the piano score, the splash of water, the finger penetrating the peach, the kisses in the dark, the choke in Elioās voice when he asks his Mom to pick him up at the station, the crackling fire that we can hear through the final credits. We can marvel at the orange of the apricot juice, the emerald green water where the locals swim, Oliverās finger on the dredged up sculpture, Oliverās finger on Elioās lower lip, the nosebleed, the way Marzia forgives Elio and extends her hand to his in eternal freundschaft.Ā Ā
Billowy.Ā
So many moments to cherish.Ā Ā
My one wish for the lovers of the film is that you live your lives as free as possible from cynicism.Ā This, after all, is one of the least cynical films ever made.Ā Be kind to each other. Be gentle with yourself. Ride the waves and donāt let fear rule your life.Ā Our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once.Ā
Dance.
Thank you Andre. Thank you James Ivory.Ā Thank you Luca. Thank you Armie and Timmy. Thank you Esther and Amira and Victoire and Mafalda and Anchise and the crazy Italian couple at lunch. Thank you Sufjan. Thank you Romano who sits in front of the bar where Oliver plays poker.Ā Thank you cute long-haired guy whose lap Marzia sits on during the dance party scene.Ā Thank you 80ā²s girls who dance excitedly toĀ āLove My Wayā.Ā Thank you 80ā²s new wave lady to dances with Oliver on their final night together.Ā Thank you Peter Spears and Howard Roseman and Walter Fasano and Chen Li and everyone else who had a hand in this masterpiece.
I am eternally grateful.

Hi guys! I'm reaching out from Sony Classics, because we know you are one of the bigger supporters for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. The film opens in hundreds of new theaters in the US this Friday, and we want to make sure all the fans know where they can see it on the big screen! It would be great if you could share our theater listing with fans. I can't include a link here, but you can find it on our Twitter feed @cmbynfilm!
Hi! Thank you for reaching out!
Peaches, hereās the link where you can buy tickets! āŗ
Please support CMBYN by seeing it in theatres if youāre able to. š
by Eric Lax Writer/director Robert Weide has stated, āIt is possible to believe in Woody Allenās innocence without branding Dylan Farrow a liar.ā The key to this seeming contradicā¦
Donāt fear doing your own research. And a question: is emotional manipulation of a child not a crime as well?Ā Ā
If you believe Dylan Farrowās obligations unequivocally, do you not believe that you owe Moses Farrow the same? I donāt really give a shit about Woody Allen.Ā I like many of his movies and have been severely disappointed by others. I have no problem with any actor (Timothee Chalamet most definitely included) donating his/her salary to charity, that is their choice.
The pitchfork reaction found on Twitter and Tumblr and Instagram, etc. is often accompanied by a startling lack of education about the Woody AllenĀ āscandalā.Ā Ā
Here we are in the one of the most exciting periods of social awakening, but it also requires exquisite attention to detail. Simply pointing your finger and screamĀ ājāaccuse!ā leads to mistakes (like the one currently roiling around Woody Allen) that can damage the movement and ruin a reputation and career.Ā Ā
Righteous anger requires righteous caution.
Timothee Chalamet Owes You Nothing
A quick glance at Twitter and Instagram this morning makes it clear: the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement now demands that Timothee Chalamet, the rising star ofĀ āCall Me by Your Nameā andĀ āLady Birdā, speak out over his role in the next Woody Allen movie (working title:Ā āA Rainy Day In New Yorkā).Ā Ā
karamazov93Will there ever be a good time for you to condemn sexual abuse? Disappointed because you shouldn't wait to speak out based on whether this film with woody Allen comes out. You're better than this and you can admit your ignorance and that you'll do better moving forward. If you really stand with the timesup movement, use this moment to use your voice
As a 22 year old actor, the idea that he is expected to use his growing fame as a platform to speak out on an issue that he has (very likely) limited first hand knowledge of, is its own level of harassment that is offensive, at a minimum.
There is no evidence that Timothee is anything but a kind young gentleman who respects the women in his life, whether its his supportive mother and sister or Armie Hammerās wife, Elizabeth, or his co-star Saoirse Ronan and director, Greta Gerwig, who heaped effusive praise on his talent and intellect.
However you feel about Woody Allen, the decision to work with someone considered a master of his craft is none of your business.Ā Allen has been making Oscar winning films for well over a decade since allegations against him were brought forward and considered in a court of law.Ā He was never convicted of a crime, has never fled custody, has addressed the issue on his own and continues on with his life as a filmmaker.Ā Ā
http://perezhilton.com/2018-01-12-timothee-chalamet-woody-allen-comments-cnn#.WljZsKinFhE
We live in a very tricky time, where an accusation is given the same weight as a conviction, and one of these days, the whole movement will be damaged by a lie.Ā Only recently, Rolling Stone magazine was ordered to pay millions in damages for publishing a story about a horrific gang rape by members of a University Of Virginia fraternity (full disclosure: I loathe fraternities and think they are the fetid birth canal of the toxic masculinity we are addressing today).Ā Ā
There are a great many issues coming to the fore about the treatment of women in every workplace and this is long overdue and a very good thing and the results of it are already being seen in the film community.Ā The road ahead is very long and there will be horrific stories to come and hard-earned victories along the way, but the important thing is to stay focused on the issues that really matter.
To demand that a young actor speak out against a Director who has been convicted of nothing and is perfectly entitled to make a living is to lose sight of the real battle.Ā I recommend people use their considerable energies to go after abuse and inequality in their own lives, their workplaces, their schools, their families.
Iām sure he is doing his best to navigate his newfound fame and will speak up about the things that he is passionate about in the years to come, perhaps even about his experience on the Woody Allen movie if he is so moved to.Ā Ā
But remember this: Timothee Chalamet owes you nothing.
For Ansel...
