Asexuals/Aromantics in Fiction
At Hannigails behest, I put together a list of characters in fiction that were asexual/aromantic. This is by no means complete, just what came to mind from stuff I’ve read/seen recently.
1) Sherlock Holmes. NOT the BBC version. The traditionally Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as the egg-head, only interested in earthly pursuits on a clinical level, if at all. Aromantic, depending on the version asexual.
2) Miles Edgeworth, Ace Attorney games. While the entire fandom slashes Phoenix/Edgeworth, Edgeworth has never expressed and interest in anyone other than his work. He shows brotherly affection towards his younger sister, and treats all the young females he encounters with the same attitude. Probably asexual, the joke in the game is that he’s married to his work.
3) Lord Voldemort. In cannon, he’s not capable of love…and being in deformed horcrux form for most of the season we can say he can’t have sex. So aromantic and asexual. My favorite Harry Potter fanfic, Prince of the Dark Kingdom, explores Voldemort’s character in far more depth than in the original series. (The original books, it’s basically he’s evil. End of story.) Voldemort in Prince of the Dark Kingdom, he’s pretty much aromantic, but not asexual. (His idea of affection is basically Hannibal’s affection to Will)
4) Alice Morgan, from Luther. ASPD, Narcissist, (Again, we see Hannibal Lecter’s idea of “Love” and “helpfulness” towards the main character. Except unlike Will, they totally deserve each other.) Aromantic, not asexual.
5) Dexter Morgan, (I’m getting weirderd out by the amount of psychopaths named Morgan…) ASPD, aromantic, and pretty much asexual until later seasons…yeah it gets weird ok?
6) Bartimaeus from the Bartimaeus Trilogy. All djinni don’t get human sexuality. They just use it to troll magicians. It’s a great book series.
7) Enjolras! From Les Miserables. Based on the historical character of Louis-Antoine Saint-Just. Enjolras is dedicated to the motherland. Aromantic, possibly asexual.
8) Any good accurate historical fiction of Robespierre and Saint-Just. Robespierre was about as asexual as you can get, and Saint-Just renounced his youthful transgressions when the Revolution started, and became functionally asexual.
9) Javert In the musical Les Mis he’s totally one tracked on capturing Jean Valjean, and in the books, he has issues with his gypsy mother (Oh yeah, Victor Hugo wrote Javert with dark skin people), so he didn’t use prostitutes, etc. functionally asexual. Javert and Valjean were actually based on the historical figure of Eugene Francois Vidocq, first known private detective.
10) Tom Ripley, Patricia Highsmith, The Riplaid. ASPD, Narcissist, In the books he’s repulsed by sex, but will do it to keep up appearances. In the academy award winning movie, he’s gay. In the early books he admires men’s physique, but that’s about it. The author seemed to flip flop on what his sexuality was. It seems that he could have been gay, or more likely bi, but just become such a closet case over this that he ended up deciding it wasn’t worth it, and rejecting both. Aromantic, Depending on the point at the series, varying degrees of asexuality.
