for the prompt game — landoscar + the word "smile" ? :)
ship + one word prompt game
Thanks for the prompt I hope you like it !
“That’s cheating!” Oscar throws his arms up in protests, laughing despite himself.
“All’s fair in love, war, and poker,” Lando responds, stacking the chips in the centre of the small table and adding them to his own pile.
Oscar groans, pushing his cards back to Lando for dealing. He crosses him arms, leaning against them edge of the coffee table, cushioning his chin in the cresse of his elbow. He lets his gaze flicker through his lashes, studying Lando's profile and he shuffles the cards for another round Oscar's bound to lose at the rate this evening's been going.
“What? Cat got your tongue?” Lando teases when he looks up, Cheshire Cat grin denting his cheeks with the most beautiful dimples; creasing his eyes at the corners.
“You’ve got the prettiest smile,” Oscar mumbles, more to himself than anyone else; tilting his head, eyes never leaving Lando.
Lando blinks; once, twice, three times; retort stilted at the tip of his tongue. Instead, he laughs. A bashful thing that paints his cheeks a rosy red and has him hunching his shoulders as a wave of embarrassment runs through his every nerve ending.
After a second, Oscar realises what he's said, shifting off his arms hyperaware and equally embarrassed.
"I–" He wants to defend himself, say he doesn't mean it; which would be a lie. So instead, he tips his head back to study the ceiling while his own cheeks turn a deep red.
"Thank you Oscar," Lando eventually say, voice light, cheery, and void of his usual teasing. He nudges Oscar's shin with his sock clad foot, drawing his attention back to Lando.
"You're welcome," Oscar replies just above a whisper, doing his best to smile back at Lando despite the desire to shrink into his hoodie.
"Ready to give me more of your money?" Lando raises and eyebrow, already dealing the next round of cards.
"Fuck off," Oscar huffs through a laugh, lifting his hand to catch the cards Lando slides his way.

seeing branches of parallel universes through Lando’s eyes wherein he credits Oscar’s first F1 win and their resulting teamwork as the reason he ultimately went on to win the world drivers' championship is wild.
“You can easily go back to, you know, Budapest a couple of years ago… I led the race and there's so many people like, oh, I wouldn't have let him back past and all those things, you know. So easy for me to just keep pounding around and win the race. Some people might have loved that, but I genuinely probably wouldn't have been able to live with that for the rest of my life... The team wouldn't be the same as they are now. Probably wouldn't have won the Constructors for the last two years, which probably means we wouldn't have won the Drivers' Championship. I wouldn't have won the Drivers' Championship last year. That's how easy it is for things to go wrong in Formula 1. So yeah, I think if I won that race, McLaren wouldn't have achieved what they have over the last few years.” — Lando Norris

Just listened to Lando's Beyond the Grid ep and I have Thoughts on Budapest 2024.
I feel like there's so much focus on Lando not giving the place back immediately, like that was something he did in a vacuum and it's not reasonable that he needed to think about it.
But there's so much context missing from that: he was in a title fight with Max Verstappen, and all he was hearing every day from every direction—commentators, social media, Netflix, podcasts, everywhere—was that he'd never be a world champion because he wasn't ruthless enough, he couldn't be Max, he didn't have the mentality.
But he gave up that win anyway, knowing that he was proving them all right. He knew exactly what they'd all say: "Max never would have done that."
I don't care how many laps it took him to make that choice. The fact is that with the helmet on, in the middle of a race and a title fight, running on pure adrenaline, with just one win under his belt, with 'Lando No-Wins' and 'too soft to be a champion' probably echoing in his mind, he still chose to do the right thing by his team and his teammate.
