Have students write to themselves in 5th grade and give it to them when they graduate high school! I thought this was so cute and remember doing something like this in 5th grade. AND YES my teacher gave the writing back when we graduated!Â

Goal setting is so important! Love this for creating both reading and writing goals!Â
So cute! Love this!Â
Create personal writing goals for your students! During the first conference with students decide together what goal they want to work on. The next conference both the student and teacher will discuss what was done with this goal and if they both feel like the student was successful in achieving this goal. If so, both the student and teacher decide what goal is best to focus on next.Â

Authentic Question
How do we gain students respect as interns?Â
This semester I feel I have struggled with gaining students respect being a student teacher. This concern has definitely gotten better since my time as a student teacher at my school. But, I feel the students think I am more there friend rather than teacher. They all know I am a college student at the University of South Carolina and sometimes it is hard to gain there attention when I am in front of the classroom by myself. During my two weeks I did get frustrated and one of the students aid, "Y'all Ms. Hagerty is mad and iI have never seen her mad before everyone stop and pay attention." And right after that they all were ready to listen and learn but so many times I have my students call me "TF" and to them that is "teacher friend." Also, students sometimes tell me things I feel they should not because they think I am just an older friend but I am not sure how to gain there respect and treat me as if I was another teacher. Again, this has gotten so much better over the semester but next semester during my full time teaching I want to have the respect of students that yes I am here for anything you need but I am also another teacher and deserve the same attention and respect my coaching teacher does when I am in front of the class.Â
"I never want my readers to visit the classroom library during independent reading time."
Conferring with Readers                                             By: Jennifer Serravallo & Gravity Goldberg                              Chapter 3 Â
This quote stuck out to me because I 100% agree with this. I think it is so important for students to search the classroom library for other books that they would like to read in the future or during next independent reading time but there is a time when that is appropriate. Independent reading time is already so limited so I feel it is important for students to really be engaged in the book(s) they already have. Since this time is usually so short it is not necessary to search for something to read during this time. Students need to be reading and doing nothing less. "Every minute is precious so book-shopping time, as we call it, happens at another time of the day."Â

"Let's begin by recognizing there is a big difference between reporting and report cards."
Classroom Reading Assessment                                     By: Frank Serafini                                                Chapter 5Â
This quote really stuck out to me because my coaching teacher and I had a really long conversation about this and I found it interesting that this was a quote I read in one of our readings. Of course it is important for students and parents to see report card grades of there overall grades in each subject but how much does that really mean to students at such a young age? My coaching teacher and I were discussing how so many students in our class grades should reflect much better then they are but so many of them forget to turn in assignments or are "lazy" and do not do as well on something as they should because of that reason. So many students in my class should have such better "reports" on there grades but so many small assignments are missing and it reflects their grade. We were talking one day about how much this upsets us because in class students really understand the material being taught to them and score so high on tests etc. This lead us in to how important it is for students to be more responsible and interested in there grades and work because like the text says "Reporting is a more extensive process, and report cards are simply one way of reporting." But of course not the only way. It is so upsetting to see such high scoring students not getting there report card grades match how they do on in class work and tests. Of course at home situations could affect this too. But for the most part this conversation became a big topic to me and my coaching teacher because of at home situations that may be affecting students school work and we discussed how we could help fix these problems.Â
Quote on pg. 116
"My goal is to have students responding to texts regulalry across all three modes and to support these more sophisticated ways of responding throughout my instructional practices."
Classroom Reading Assessment                                     By: Frank Serafini                                                Chapter 4Â
This quote stuck out to me because it is really important to make sure students are responding regularly to texts using the three modes. Not only will it help them become more proficient in this area but it will help the teacher know where a student is having the most struggle. I think it is great to have these kinds of goals as teachers. It helps you stay more organized and able to help students to the best of your ability. Â

"We can't assess everything, so we make decisions about what we feel is important for students to know and be able to do, and these judgment calls reflect our values, histories, and cultures."

"We can also make it clear to students that we are interested in what they have to say."

This quote stuck out to me because I feel that it is important to let students have a voice. Not only does help develop a relationship with them but it helps establish a strong classroom community.Â

"It's important that students have access to a rigorous whole-class curriculum through mini lessons and read-alouds, and that my conferring not only supports my students in their levels, but also supports their thinking about the unit on which our class is focused."

Quote on page 99
"From the beginning of my teaching in a reading workshop, I dutifully looked up titles in the back of Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell's Guided Reading and marked the covers of the books with colored dots, knowing that having these books leveled would help my students to choose books that were just right for them."
Conferring With Readers                                             By: Jennifer Serravallo & Gravity Goldberg                            Chapter 7
This quote stuck out to me because last week at my internship we had a professional development day for the teachers. The one presentation I decided to go watch was about reading with lexiles. This teacher has every students lexile level and made sure students new their levels too. She then marked the inside of books with the lexile they are. This can all be found on a website all you have to do is search a book and it will pop up. It even gives all the challenge words from that book. I really enjoyed this presentation and loved this way of placing students and books in the right level. It is important that students are reading on their right level and not with books that are to easy or to hard.Â

"Are there any other ways to think about that? Any other opinions? According to published research, this sort of invitation does not happen often in school."
Choice Words                                                     By: Peter H. Johnston                                             Chapter 7Â
This quote stuck out to me because I think it is really important to ask these kinds of questions to students. In all subjects. Not everyone student learns the same way so if students can see things in different ways and not just one they may be able to grasp information much better then by just using one approach. Asking questions like to make students think more in depth is important!Â
Quote on page 69
"Recall that "children grow into the intellectual life around them" and that that intellectual life is fundamentally social. The social relationships within which they learn are a part of their learning. Children, just like adults, learn better in a supportive environment in which they can risk trying out new strategies and concepts and stretching themselves intellectually."
Choice Words                                                    By: Peter H. Johnston                                             Chapter 7Â
This quote stuck out to me because it is so important to build a strong classroom community right from the start. It is important that students come into class comfortable with their surroundings and classmates and ready to learn. Students learn from each other and it is important that the relationship associated with the learning is an inextricable part of what is learned. Personally, I love working and learning from my peers I am comfortable talking to anyone and it is great to feel that it is ok to help each other and check each other's tendencies.
