spiritually nourished by listening in to the admin meeting and hearing that work is having trouble recruiting staff for their understaffed, very part-time afterschool positions. the peace that passeth understanding, etc.
their first two suggestions for improving staff morale and mental health were "have everyone attend a mandatory mental health seminar" and "ask the staff how things are going" bro at least have a pizza party...
bro I have been in therapy for years, if you make me sit thru a PowerPoint about journaling and taking time for myself when my top two stressors are 1) you and 2) also you but in a different way, I will shit my pants during the seminar, god bless <3

iāve been seeing a lot of posts on my dash about the witcher and it looked pretty interesting to me, but when i went on netflix the description was really vague and unhelpful. in attempt to not accidentally spoil myself by looking on the web, would you mind telling me a little about it?
first of all, to watch the witcher you need to replace your expectation ofĀ āgoodā withĀ ātotally unhinged.ā
the show is about henry cavill in extremely tight clothing, carrying around a broadsword, facing moral dilemmas, fighting monsters, and having sex. he takes a potion before every fight (which isnāt explained) and no one in the story ages (which also isnāt explained) so peopleās parents and grandparents look the same age as their progeny.Ā
the witcher is not a monster of the week show, nor does it have a coherent ongoing arc. it is not told in chronological order. most of the things that happen are unrelated to everything else that happens. the timeline might happen over weeks, decades, or centuries, and none of that is explained. lore is told in fits and bursts and makes no sense at all. the first episode is absolutely useless and you should not judge the rest of the season based on it, but it has a great sword fight and geralt (thatās henry cavill in extremely tight clothing) talks lovingly to his horse. thatās it. thatās the show.
what is important to know is that the season is adapted from short stories set before the events of the book series. so itās not season 1 as much as season 0, which is why it feels like nothing is connected or makes sense. itās a primer to what iām assuming the next season will be (and i think/hope the fandom will really take off).Ā
everyone seems to have boners for everyone else. most of the characters are women and they are all absolutely feral. the showrunner is a woman, and most of the eps are written and directed by women. itās like watching a really wild fanfic come to life. what i love about it is that itās just so fucking weird. every expectation i had going into it was shattered, and even the moments that were cheesy or boring or cringey or dumb i found somewhat endearing. now that iām done watching it, i kind of want to watch it again, which is something i rarely do. after every episode i thought,Ā āi really donāt like this, and i donāt want to watch anymore.ā and after every episode, i clicked play on the next.Ā
if you like hot beefy men who are deeply misunderstood as being the bad guy but are actually good-aligned, youāll like the witcher. if you like complicated, all-powerful, borderline-evil female characters who are greedy and heartless and have ample room for growth, youāll like the witcher. if you like isolated men who are chased by endearing comedic relief sidekicks, youāll like the witcher. if you like stories in which seemingly self-centered men are made to become paternal toward helpless beings, you will like the witcher. if you want to ship everyone with everyone else and be totally overwhelmed by attractive people doing attractive things, you will like the witcher. if you like catchy bops that will be stuck in your head for 87 years, youāll like the witcher.
the only way you will not like the witcher is if youāre expecting it to be good.
can someone explain what ātoss a coin to your witcherā means? im assuming a witcher is not just the titular character but is a category of person? how does one possess one? why do they need coins? why are we tossing them; is a witcher like a public fountain?
A witcher is, indeed, a category of person. Theyāre, like, alchemically-enhanced monster-hunting mutants, or something like that (I havenāt read the books).
One doesnāt possess one, but one can employ one, if one has any monsters that need hunting.
They need coins to exchange for goods and services, just like everyone else.
We are tossing them because that sounds jauntier than just giving them.
I loved this show about 4000% more than I was expecting to. The moment at the end of episode one where I realized What Was Going On was great. It very, very much expects viewers to pay attention, and itās not going to straight up answer your questions. It would much rather you figure it out.
While the above posts are all incredibly correct, the thing that got ME into the show was that itās the story of a man who refused to make a choice, and heās been paying for his wilfull inaction ever since. And I loveĀ it.
Also, he is the least interesting person and he KNOWS it. That helps a great deal.
geraltās first Important Line is (paraphrasing): evil is evil. lesser, greater, makes no difference. if i must make a choice, i prefer not choose at all.
TO WHICH, everyone in my house said, āitās an election year, geralt, get your shit together.ā
also this post needs some images of the feral women because they are magnificent
Geralt is the main character who is constantly upset to discover he is the main character. He doesnāt even want to be a minor character.
Jaskier is the comic relief character who refuses to believe he is not the main character.
Yennefer would straight up tell you sheās the main character, bitch. Geralt? Geralt who?
Ciri might not be the MC, but she is the most important character in *the entire Witcher universe* and yet spends season one running around in circles like a badly programmed npc.
Sometimes suspense is worth it, even if it means serving your audience the entire plot on a silver platter:
In Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows Juliet isn't dead. Romeo does not. It's a tragedy.
In the TV-show Breaking Bad, a DEA agent is looking for a crystal-meth producer who calls himself ''Heisenberg,'' not knowing that ''Heisenberg'' is his brother-in-law.
In the play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus tries to expose the murderer of King Laius, not knowing that he himself is the murderer.
That my friends, is what we call dramatic irony. A literary device in which the audience's understanding of certain events or individuals in a story surpasses that of its characters.
What I mean by that is simple ā not every plot twist or plot line that occurs in your story has to come as a surprise to your audience.
It's not in any way wrong to drop important information ahead of time. Sometimes the best way to tackle a twist is simply to let your audience in on what's happening. Let them anticipate the emotional reactions of the characters. In certain cases, that can be torture. Which is a good thing. Storytelling wise.
You'll still have your audience at the edge of their seats, not out of suspense of what's going to happen, but out of fear, and excitement, of how the characters they've grown to love are going to react to it.
For all they know, the plot twist, and I am using plot twist loosely, it can just as well be a secret big enough to destroy a relationship, but not something that is going to affect every character, could potentially ruin everything.
It can turn characters against each other, massive consequences to follow. Maybe a certain character is heading towards a certain death, maybe their partner is falling in love with someone else, unaware of their partnerās infidelity.
Maybe a character is enjoying a nice day out at the park, not knowing that previous night a herd of zombies marched through. Instantly alarm bells starts ringing ā the apocalypse is upon us. When is the character gonna find out? How are they gonna to find out?
Worst part ā a close family member of the character has already fallen victim to the undead, and now, having been missing for a couple days, is approaching said character from behind, reanimated as a zombie. Weāve already seen this person bitten and turned, but for the character, it's a different story.
Your audience are emotionally invested in your characters. Use that to your advantage.
To have your audience sit on a a piece of information, not knowing how it's going to affect their favorite characters and relationships, can have just as much of an emotional impact as a ''regular'' plot twist.
From Alfred Hitchcock:
"There is a distinct difference between "suspense" and "surprise," and yet many pictures continually confuse the two. I'll explain what I mean.
We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"
In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.ā

Since joining Tumblr, Iāve met a lot of young queer people. Look, Iām a bisexual man in a gay relationship, and Iām approaching 30. I was still a kid when Matthew Shepardās story was being covered on the news. I remember thinking, āI better keep my mouth shut about these feelings Iām having.ā
And then I met Dominic when I was 12, and people could see how in love we were. And we got the shit beat out of us. The year I met him, some kids in the grade above me held me down against the bleachers in our gym and stomped on my hand until my fingers broke. Instead of sending me to the nurse, the teacher sent me to the assistant principal to explain the situation. She asked why the kids had beat me up. I said, āThey were calling me gay.ā
Her response was, āWell, are you?ā
My, āI donāt know,ā earned a call to my parents, and I was outed. Efforts were made to keep me from seeing Dom. Throughout high school, Domās stepmother intensified these efforts. He slept in the basement of the house. Although he was an incredibly talented student, he was prohibited from participating in any extracurriculars. He suffered a lot of physical abuse during those years.
The day he turned 18, he packed up everything he had and walked to my house, and weāve lived together ever since. Things are better, but theyāre not perfect. Iāve had trucks pull up next to me at stoplights and, seeing the pride sticker on my car, through old drinks and garbage into my window. I no longer speak to my dadās side of the family. I havenāt been to see them for Christmas or Thanksgiving in years. One of my uncles had cornered me at Thanksgiving when I was 17 and said, āIām not going to judge you, but Iād be happy to break your neck so God can do the judging a little sooner.ā
I joined a support group for trans and intersex people. When I joined, 40 people attended regularly. Within the year, the group was half the size it had been. Some couldnāt make it anymore, because they were staying at the shelter, where their stay hinged on them agreeing to instead to attend homophobic sermons. Some were put in correctional therapy. Five of them died. Three of those, I didnāt know, but I knew Alex, the 19 year old who was fag-dragged in Kentucky and died a day later in the hospital, and I knew Stephanie, who went home to Alabama to care for her mom in hospice and was beaten to death with a baseball bat by her momās boyfriend.
Tumblr is not reality. The dynamic here does not reflect the dynamic out there. Hereās the part where I finally make a point, and it might be extremely unpopular - but guys, value your allies. Value each other. We are met with enough hate in our daily lives to enter an online safe-space and meet more hate from our own, over petty things. Donāt go after one another over every little thing you find problematic.
Learn to see nuance. Maybe the word āqueerā bothers you, and you see a gay man using it as an umbrella term. Maybe someone called a trans man a trans woman because theyāre confused about terminology, but the post where they did it was voicing support for the trans community. Maybe someone is just asking a question, wanting to learn more. Stop. Attacking. These. People.
Allies are being driven away. Members of our own community are being ostracized. Others are feeling nervous and estranged, and itās largely because of places like Tumblr, where the social justice movement is quickly becoming violent and radical. I am begging you, stop nitpicking āproblematicā things and start directing your efforts to create real change. When it comes to comes to your allies, forget the āsocial justice warriorā mentality and put down your torch. Educate calmly. Be respectful. Be understanding. Be forgiving. And Iām certainly not saying that your anger doesnāt have a good place - when you are met with bigots on the street, congress members who want to pass hateful laws, violent protesters, abusive parents, prejudiced teachers, thatĀ is when you need to be a warrior. Thatās when it counts. In the real world. When you have the opportunity to protect people from real harm. Attacking your would-be allies via anonymous asks is just going to lose us ground in the long run. And we donāt have time for that, not when trans women of color are being murdered every day, not when states are still fighting against marriage equality, not when there are politicians in office who believe that trans people are possessed by demons, not when weāve just lost 50 brothers and sisters to one gunman, not when the media wonāt even admit that the attack was homophobic.
Please step back. Look at the big picture. Look at where we are, globally. Donāt just log on to your safe space and attack your allies over small missteps. Thatās like washing the dishes in a house thatās on fire, kids. Letās fight on the battlefield, and when we come home to each other, letās just focus on bandaging up our wounds so we can go out and win the war.
I would argue on one point: āTumblr is not reality.ā
It would be more accurate to say āTumblr is not the entirety of reality.ā
Because, and I want to stress this, Tumblr is, in fact, real. It has the capacity to help, and it has the capacity to hurt. Most of the people that have been driven off didnāt leave because they just werenāt having fun anymore, they left because they were being hurt and chose not to continue being hurt.
Furthermore, Tumblr does have an impact on non-Tumblr reality. Iām not saying itās a Massive Impact, but yeah, the way people get treated on Tumblr can and does affect how they behave outside of Tumblr.
i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you canāt do that if your healthcare is tied to your job
listen if somebody knows that they will be dead in a years time, and you are forcing them to continue to come into work, thatās fucked up. terminally ill people should be able to quit their jobs and live their last few months to the fullest. i donāt get how thatās a controversial opinion

Do ppl realize that Ebinizer Scrooge isnāt bad because he dislikes Christmas, heās bad because heās greedy and selfish and pays his employees poverty wages and has no concern whether other people live or die
dickens: scrooge hates christmas because itās about being generous and spending time with others with no profit motive, and all he cares about is profit.
audience:Ā wow, canāt believe that scrooge hates having fun.
dickens: literally every relationship heās ever had has been ruined because he cared more about making money than about other people.Ā
audience: canāt believe a guy cut off his whole family because he doesnāt like tinsel.
dickens, growing more frustrated: heās so obsessed with profit that he wonāt even heat his own house if it costs him money! he complains about losing a single day of income from businesses being closed on christmas! CHRISTMAS IS A METAPHOR FOR BEING A DECENT PERSON!
audience:Ā how can you hate cookies and presents, you scrooge?
āMAYBE ITāS NOT MY WEEKEND, BUT ITāS GONNA BE MY YEARā I scream at 12 am with tears streaming down my face and a bottle of champagne in my hand. it has not been my year yet. itās not even a weekend today is Thursday
The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they canāt be bothered to use it.
@ my young followers, i have nothing against you! but to be real, make sure you are thinking about how you are spending your time! youre not going to enjoy it when youre 25 and looking back at your childhood and seeing that you wasted it getting into kin drama and other such bs.
check on yourself every now and then and if coming onto this site has become a chore instead of a nice time where you can look at pics of stuff you like and relax, either block/unfollow the people bringing you down or LEAVE!!!! ive hinted at this idea before but i just, i always believed catradoraās reconciliation was going to be about them finding their way back to the dynamic they had as kids.
in Promise when adora called octavia aĀ ādumbfaceā just to throw her lot in with catra. the essence of the promise itself,Ā āas long as we have each other.ā in 5x03 when catra misses dinner and adoraās likeĀ āokay then i am, too!ā even with scars still fresh on her face. its like⦠when they were just kids⦠when things were simple between them before shadow weaver got in their headsā¦ā¦ love was just, if youāre hurting, then iām hurting too. where you go, i go. isnt that all love really is anyway ?
we see this theme again when adora jumps off the ledge after catra with no idea if sheād survive. when catra jumps into fire for her, when she decides to sacrifice herself alongside her.Ā idk why the gravity of catras words in 5x12 is just now hitting me where she was likeĀ āi made a promise to adora a long time ago that iād look out for her and itās time i made good on it.ā i think i used to read it as them saying theyād always protect each other, but really it was more about just.. being with each other.Ā catra choosing to stand by adoraās side, to either live or die with her.. it was their promise. ānothing really bad can happen as long as we have each other.ā adora had never given up on it and now catraās faith was restored in it too. and it was finally fulfilled when their kiss saved the world.
this is what i was talking about when i said she-ra sends a message that lesbian love is pure and innocent because their love story is inextricably linked to their childhood. their romance literallyĀ is their childhood dynamic!!!! THIS SHOW IS SO IMPORTANT
so when i was 7 or 8 iād āwrite letters to hermione grangerā and set them out on the piano in the living room every night with my stuffed toy owl and every morning iād have a letter from hermione back, sitting at the foot of my bed, and hermione and i corresponded like that for months and iād just like to thank my mom for writing out a āletter from hermioneā for me every single night
so when i was about the same age i got really into both ciphers and james madison (idk donāt ask) so i just randomly started writing these letters like i was james madison writing to my own spy ring, using all kinds of ciphers. constantly writing that WE MUST SWITCH CIPHERS THE BRITISH ARE ON TO US. and it wasnāt every night because the ciphers kept getting more complex, but it was about one every week for six months and my mother always responded. and she always found the letters, because i took to hiding them in increasingly more obscure locations because spies, obviously.Ā
i didnāt realize how much work this was until i snuck down late one night for a cookie. and saw my mother bent over my giant book of ciphers and muttering to the dog āis this another code or can she not spell?ā (i could not and still can not spell) and i was a bit angry at first but i kept watching and she KEPT AT IT. checking everything in that book against my letter and i never felt so loved. my mom with a full time job sitting up to figure out my silly letters said just because i enjoyed the game.Ā
i got her this bio of james madison a few years ago for xmas with a simple number substitution cipher on the inside saying āIn thanks for your dedicated years of service, your daughter and occasional President.ā She still has it pride of place on her desk next to the obligatory kid pics
