As a Medical Technologist Intern

Last Sunday, I had my first night duty at VMMC. My duty started by 3PM and ended at 7AM the following day. It was a very independent experience if I may say. I was the lone intern on duty that night, but a staff from the morgue accompanied me just in case there are mortality to be recorded. It was a Sunday so I thought I won't be doing so much; I thought that most of the time, I would be sleeping. Well, what I thought was actually true. Hehehe! Histopath is not a busy lab, if I may compare it to the rest becuase specimens are usually collected by much complicated procedure. 

That night I processed two pleural fluid specimens! *Claps!* Plus, a paps smear that I received around 3 AM in the morning. Weird time don't you think? But I guess everything happens in a real hospital setting :) that night as well, I received two calls of mortality and I have to release the patient's body that night also. 

Then I realized that more than the experience and knowledge that I can acquire with my chosen profession, I can give service not only to the patient but also to their family as well. To cater to their needs and just give them empathy and sympathy is such a blessing to human relations. 

I really thank God for this opportunity to serve other people. 

So far, I had a total of 16 hours of internship in my first assigned laboratory section which is HISTOPATHOLOGY!

Most people say that it's a "chill" section as compared to others like Clin Chem and Hematology but of course, as part of our training, considering that health care profession is very crucial, one cannot just be too comfortable. So, for my first duty, I tried to listen really well although I know that I won't get everything right by just listening, of course I have to do it to know that I got it. So far,  would say, so good.

We were taught to receive, process and release the specimen! Add to that, our section is also responsible for the receiving and release of bodies to and from the morgue. Aside from all these duties are the new knowledge that we didn't learn in school. I would say that these knowledge are based from the experience of those who have been working in this filed for a very long time! It's such a blessing to be given this kind of opportunity!

I made few mistakes already but thankfully, by God's grace, these mistakes are nothing major. It's always been my prayer that God will grant me wisdom, skills and knowledge so that I can bring comfort and quality healthcare to the patient, not harm them in any way. 

This week has been more of test of faith for me. I'm still getting used to everything, the surrounding and all but I know that God won't leave me behind so I'm mustering all the confidence that I can have.

It was a long walk from the gate 2 of Veterans to hospital proper. Good thing I arrived 30 minutes early for our internship orientation. On May 1, I will officially start this long path; a new chapter in my mission to reach my dreams!

Everyday will not be the same like today which is sunny and clear; there would surely be those days that rain and thunder would shudder me but with positivity and faith, I know I’ll be able to make it through!

I'm Reg and I'm about to enter the biggest challenge that my life is to face so far! I'm about to enter an internship program in Veterans Memorial Medical Center next month and the thought makes my inside into complete turbulence. Hurrrr :)

Since I consider this internship as a significant part of my life, I decided to blog about my gonna-be experiences. I'll post pictures, notes, thoughts about everything so that I'll be able to keep them as significant memories, good or bad.
