Irving Azoff & Harry Styles
Who is the person who has been controlling Harry Styles' public life for about fifteen years? Why can studying Irving Azoff's figure be useful to understand Harry's lights and shadows?
[What follows is a very long post, readers be warned]
Harry Styles joking in Irving Azoff's office
Of course we all know that Harry's manager is Jeffrey Azoff, the mogul's eldest son, but it is fair to assume that it was Dad Irving who was the mastermind and puppeteer, and still is. And his story speaks for itself. Just connect all the dots!
Big Shorty or Poisonous Dwarf, as he is "affectionately" called in the industry, began working in music management in the 70s with David Geffen, immediately hooking up with the Eagles, still his clients and the spearhead of his portfolio.
In the 80s, with the support of Geffen himself, he began to dedicate himself to music production, becoming president of MCA Music Entertainment Group, which he then left in the 90s for Warner Music Group, with which he founded the Giant Records label. He had previously founded another label, Full Moon Records, a subsidiary of Epic, distributed by Sony Music, which was then absorbed by Warner. In the same period he also insinuated himself into Hollywood, co-producing films such as Urban Cowboy and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (screenplay by Cameron Crowe, a long-time collaborator of Rolling Stone, author of more than one article on Azoff) and as executive producer of The Hurricane.
In the early 70s he founded together with Howard Kaufman Front Line Management, a major american music artist management company, representing legendary acts like The Eagles, Van Halen, Christina Aguilera, Lenny Kravitz and Aerosmith, later acquired by Ticketmaster Entertainment, then converged into Live Nation Entertainment. In 2010 Ticketmaster, live event ticket sales and distribution company of which Azoff was CEO, merged with Live Nation, events promoter and venue operator, giving life to Live Nation Entertainment, with Azoff as executive chairman. The company is an entertainment management empire and has been subject to numerous controversies over the years due to lack of competition and investigations by the Department of Justice, resolved following an agreement under Trump administration. Other legal issues alleged ticket price fixing, hidden fees and anti-competitive practices, security, patent infringement, and sensitive data leaks. Additionally, in 2018, CEO Heather Parry was suspended and then fired following allegations of abuse and verbal harassment toward employees that surfaced in an investigation by Variety. The Barry Diller affair is part of the merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation. In 2008, Diller, a veteran telecommunications entrepreneur and film producer who heads Ticketmaster, acquired Azoff's Front Line Management, creating Ticketmaster Entertainment, of which Azoff became chairman. Following the merger with Live Nation, Diller was outvoted by Azoff on the board of directors after a bitter power feud. Even recently Diller calls Azoff "infidel" and "Judas" because of that action. And Diller certainly couldn't be described as naive or inexperienced. Among the many positions he held during his long career, he was chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. During his presidency in the latter, he created Fox Broadcasting Company, producing historic shows such as The Simpsons, in close collaboration with Rupert Murdoch despite harsh differences of opinion. In fact, while Murdoch's political positions are very close to the conservative right, as the editorial line of his companies demonstrates, Diller is a well-known Democratic supporter, a fervent anti-Trump, and has always been the subject of speculation in the environment regarding his sexual orientation. Murdoch also owns, through News Corp, which he heads, numerous press and media outlets, including Sky, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post in US, The Times and The Sun in UK, Page Six. It is not illogical to assume that Diller could have been a bridge between Azoff and Murdoch, although there are no known collaborative relationships between the two so far.
In 2013, Azoff founded Global Music Right, a for-profit copyright management company that licenses public performance rights to companies, broadcasters, and digital platforms to legally reproduce protected compositions. Through GMR Azoff manages the publishing rights of numerous high-level artists, including the artists he represents and of course Harry Styles. Recently, GMR has taken a stand against the use of artificial intelligence in music production and against free streaming which is not statistically comparable to pay streaming, in a polemic with YouTube. This seems like a worthy cause, protecting the artists' interests. But let's remember that Azoff owns or manages numerous royalties, so he's essentially protecting his own interests. Furthermore, offering this type of protection to artists is also a potential tool for controlling the artists themselves. In 2018, GMR was sued by the Radio Music License Committee, a non-profit organization representing the American radio industry, for copyright fees, fractional licensing fees, and cartel abuse. The two parties reach an agreement in 2022.
Also in 2013, he founded Azoff MSG Entertainment, a joint venture with Madison Square Garden Company. In 2018, acquired 50% of MSG Company, officially renaming it The Azoff Company. All of these positions, CEO/executive/consultant, provide Azoff with broad powers to manage Madison Square Garden events and company-related facilities such as the Inglewood Forum in California and Las Vegas MSG Sphere. To protect the company's interests, in 2019 Azoff joined a class action lawsuit to prevent the construction of a new arena in Inglewood for the LA Clippers (basket), a competitor to the facility operated by MSG.
In 2015, he founded Oak View Group with Tim Leiweke, a sports and live entertainment consulting and investment firm. OVG manages numerous sports facilities and season ticket campaigns, especially for ice hockey, built/renovated/owns sports and live event arenas and is co-owner of CO-OP Live in Manchester, along with Manchester City Football Club and Harry Styles.
In 2017 he became chairman of Full Stop Management, a music entertainment management and artist representation company, founded by his son Jeffrey (a figure we will explore further later). Along with his son, he represents a vast plethora of high-level artists, Harry Styles, U2, Lizzo, Meghan Trainor, Kings of Leon, Gwen Stefani, John Meyer, to which are added Irving's loyalists, The Eagles, Bon Jovi, Van Halen and Christina Aguilera. In recent years, FSM has been embroiled in heated controversy over its aggressive policy regarding its artists' live content, which was shared by fans on platforms like YouTube and promptly deleted. A case in point is John Meyer, whose concert videos shared by fans were deleted, even after the musician had supported the sharing, at least according to numerous statements from his fans. Again, what can be interpreted as protection of the artists' interests hides a more personal interest, as Azoff is among the major beneficiaries of copyright and royalties.
Together with music executive and former photographer Olivier Chastan, he founded Iconic Artists Group, an entertainment rights management company, in 2018. Through IAG, Azoff has acquired the catalogs and intellectual property of numerous legendary artists over the years, including David Crosby, The Beach Boys, Rod Stewart, Bryan Ferry, Cher, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.
In 2019, together with his wife Shelli, Azoff took over ownership of The Apple Pan, a historic Los Angeles restaurant. In 2022, Harry Styles was spotted at the place and was often seen wearing a hoodie from the restaurant's merchandise, during the much-hyped "relationship" with the actress Olivia Wilde. That same year, he also became the owner of Nate n' Al, a Jewish deli restaurant in Beverly Hills, again with his wife and a consortium of investors, including Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber. The former supermodel's husband owns several clubs and restaurants in the Los Angeles area, including Café Habana and the Whiskey at Sunset Marquis, where Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson were often strategically spotted (separately, of course) between 2015 and 2016.
Azoff also has quite solid ties with the television environment. Through Azoff MSG Entertainment, he holds a 50% stake in Levity Entertainment Group, a media and entertainment company that produces tv shows distributed to various broadcasters, mainly NBC. Through Triage Entertainment, an affiliated television production company, and Syco Entertainment, british music, television and film production company, owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music, LEG has produced numerous special shows, always for NBC. The Group also collaborates with the broadcaster in the writing and production of comedy shows, and several NBC producers and casting directors come from Levity. Azoff also exerts a great deal of influence on shows like The Voice, again NBC, having a say in casting decisions. For example, both Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani are his clients, and music producer Ron Fair, a longtime collaborator of Aguilera and consultant on The Voice, has been a record label executive for Azoff's Front Line Management since 2012. And let's remember that one of NBC's flagship shows, Saturday Night Live, has frequently hosted Harry Styles throughout his career.
From this curriculum vitae, we can easily see that there is no sector of the entertainment world in which Azoff does not exert his influence. Over the years, he has built a network of power similar to a "hive mind", from which it's very difficult to escape unscathed.

In recent years, the powerful businessman has been embroiled in several legal disputes.
• In 2010, Azoff sued Axl Rose, frontman of the rock band Guns'n'Roses and his client, for $2 million for debts and unpaid commissions. Rose responded by suing his manager for breach of fiduciary duty, fraud and breach of contract. The singer accused him of sabotaging the promotion and sales of the band's new album, featuring new members (Chinese Democracy), and of lying about a fictitious tour with Van Halen, with the sole purpose of forcing him into a reunion with the original Guns'n'Roses members. The two parties settled in 2011.
• In 2018, singer Nicki Minaj accused him of waging a smear campaign against her. The parties settled, Minaj is now a on and off client of Azoff and GMR manages her copyrights.
• Also in 2018, the dispute between Lindsey Buckingham against Stevie Nicks and Irving Azoff. Stevie Nicks, the historic voice of Fleetwood Mac, communicated his dismissal from the band to Buckingham, founder of FM and Nicks' former partner, through Azoff. This was followed by venomous attacks in the press to discredit both sides and years of controversy and mutual accusations (Buckingham claimed that the decision regarding his dismissal had exclusively economic motivations, Nicks and Azoff claimed that he had become impossible to work with). It is worth noting that Azoff and Stevie Nicks are linked by years of solid personal friendship as well as professional relationship.
• A famous and interesting legal dispute involving Azoff is the Glenn Horowitz vs. Don Henley case. In 2022, Horowitz, a prominent rare book dealer, was charged by Henley, the Eagles' frontman, with conspiracy to possess more than 100 pages of allegedly stolen handwritten notes and drafts of song lyrics, valued at more than $1 million. The bookseller claimed to have legally purchased the pages from writer Ed Sanders, who had in turn purchased them while working on a biography of the band in the late 1970s. In 2024, a judge ruled that significant failures in communication by the prosecution constituted concealment of evidence, leading to the charges being dropped. Horowitz later filed a civil suit against Henley and Azoff, alleging they had deliberately manipulated evidence and prosecutors to incriminate him, but the suit was dismissed.
• In 2023, Irving and Shelli Azoff were sued by their former housekeeper for unpaid wages and physical and psychological abuse, as well as unfair dismissal (apparently they did not agree with the hysterectomy the woman had undergone).
• In 2024, rock band The Black Keys fired Azoff as their manager following the cancellation of their US tour due to poor ticket sales (remember that Live Nation is always under his control).
• In 2025 he promoted FireAid, a benefit concert in aid of the victims of devastating fires that had hit Southern California, which was followed by considerable controversy over the actual destination of the funds raised, distributed to local organizations and not to the actual victims.
None of these legal setbacks have so far undermined his power, but these details, when read together, constitute a modus operandi. Eliminate every obstacle that arises, by circumventing, paying or demolishing, using all available means, legal or otherwise. Would it be wise to go against him?

a circle of friends, stand out Azoff and Robert Kardashian
As mentioned, Azoff has built a solid power network over the years, made up of long-standing friendships, business partners, and common interests. These are the more interesting subjects that constitute his magic circle:
He is a powerful businessman, former CEO of Cablevision, a major cable television company based in New York, inherited from his father. Between 1994 and 1997, he acquired ownership of Madison Square Garden, later becoming executive chairman and CEO of MSG Sports and MSG Entertainment, and executive chairman of Sphere Entertainment and becoming partner with Azoff in 2013 in the MSG Company. He owns the sports teams associated with MSG, such as the New York Knicks (basket) and New York Rangers (ice hockey), and the related sport networks. Personal friend of Trump, member of his club at Mar-a-lago, which he chose as the location of his wedding in 2002, he was a financier of Trump's presidential campaign in 2016. In his spare time, he dedicates himself to music, reportedly with poor results. In 2001, he founded JD & Straight Shot, a country-blues band with talented backing musicians, with whom he performs as a singer. His close relationship with Azoff allows the band to perform as opening acts for the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top and others. MSG employees are often "warmly forced" to attend his band's shows. Music critics consider him a mediocre karaoke singer accompanied by good musicians.
It's not surprising that Dolan has been at the center of several controversies and legal disputes over the years. Since 2000, all MSG employees who may interact with the press have been required to undergo media training. Criticizing any MSG member in the media is prohibited. The press is prohibited from interviewing players without a public relations representative present, writing articles critical of the organization is prohibited and networks associated with MSG are prohibited from criticizing its teams in any way. In 2007, a former Knicks executive sued him for being fired after she reported Isiah Thomas, a former player, then president of basket operations and later a commentator and analyst for Fox Sports, for sexual harassment. The plaintiff won the case and Dolan and MSG were forced to pay a multi-million dollar settlement. In 2015, Dolan appointed Thomas as president of the women's basketball team, sparking heated controversy given his prior conduct. Thomas was fired from his position in 2019 by the team's new owners. In 2022, Dolan began implementing a policy of using facial recognition at his clubs to prevent entry to lawyers involved in lawsuits against him or his companies, sparking controversy, lawsuits and a liquor license investigation. In 2024, Kellye Croft, a masseuse who accompanied the Eagles on tour, where Dolan's band was supporting them, sued him for sexual assault, for putting her in a position to be harassed by Harvey Weinstein and for coercion. The lawsuit was dismissed that same year. In June 2026, during game 3 of the NBA finals, Knicks vs Spurs, Dolan proudly sits next to Trump and days later, before game 4, he argues furiously with Mayor Mamdani for having cancelled the party with the game shown on giant screens outside the Garden for security reasons.
Azoff's partner in Oak View Group since 2015, Leiweke was president until 2013 of AEG, a sports event organizer owner of LA Kings (ice hockey), LA Galaxy (soccer) and a percentage of LA Lakers (basket), and numerous arenas around the world, including the O2 Arena in London. He later became CEO and president of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, a Toronto-based professional sports and commercial real estate company that operates sports venues and arenas including the Scotia Bank Arena in Toronto. In 2025 he was indicted by the Department of Justice for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act, but was pardoned by Trump the same year.
A large and rich chapter is the enduring bond between the Azoff/Kardashian families. Irving and Robert Kardashian, the family patriarch, met in the early 1970s, when RK co-founded Radio & Records magazine with Bob Wilson, specialized in radio charts, music industry news, and radio broadcast monitoring, then in the 2000s became a sister publication to Billboard.
• Robert Kardashian: businessman and lawyer, who died in 2003. As a businessman, he founded companies such as Movie Tunes, a marketing and advertising company that provided audio and music during movie intermissions in major movie theater chains, and invested in Concert Cinema, one of the first ventures in music video production. As a lawyer, he became known to the general public for actively participating in the defense of O.J. Simpson in the trial in which he was accused of the murders of his wife Nicole Browne, and Ronald Goldman. RK, Simpson's longtime friend, who was best man at his wedding to Kris, kept him safe in his home after the murders, was seen carrying a bag believed to contain Simpson's bloody clothes and read to the media a letter from OJ Simpson that implied suicidal intentions. Furthermore, Kardashian had an expired law license but he reactivated it just to participate in Simpson's defense in order to avoid the possibility of having to testify. In 1996, during an interview with Barbara Walters, he revealed that he had subsequently developed doubts about Simpson's innocence, a factor which suggests that it was the cause of their estrangement following the acquittal.
• Kris Kardashian Jenner: wife of Robert Kardashian from 1978 to 1991, with whom she had children Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Rob; wife of Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn), a former professional athlete, from 1991 to 2015, with whom she had children Kendall and Kylie. One of her closest friends is Shelli Azoff, Irving's wife. In 2007, she convinced Ryan Seacrest, TV host and producer, to produce a reality show about her large Kardashian-Jenner family, giving rise to a successful franchise that has lasted for twenty years, in which partners, spouses and children are exposed and involved. It's worth noting a couple of things about Ryan Seacrest's professional career: he worked with Fox TV on the show American Idol; he hosted Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve for ABC for a long time (the New York show was the location of the much-hyped staged kiss between Harry Styles and Taylor Swift in 2012; One Direction played at the show twice in 2014 and 2015); he is an active contributor to E! News, where he is still managing editor, and NBC. Returning to the figure of Mrs. Kardashian-Jenner, she is constantly and obsessively busy managing the careers of her children, especially her daughters, dedicating herself to the fashion and cosmetics activities and brands connected to them, coining the now popular term "momager" (mom and manager). To reaffirm her position as a woman and mother of power, she takes part in the music video for the song "Mother" by Meghan Trainor (artist of the Azoff roster), a hymn to women who don't have to give up anything.
• Kim Kardashian: Robert and Kris's second child, the most popular of the family among the general public. Best friends with Azoff's daughter Allison since childhood. Azoff was briefly Kanye West's manager during his marriage with Kim, which was speculated to be a pr/cover marriage. Allison, co-founder and CEO of Blended Strategy Group, a marketing, influencer and PR firm, after 17 years working for her father's management, collaborates assiduously with Kim's brands and appeared on the Kardashian reality show.
• Kendall Jenner: she obviously represents a fundamental chapter in the bond between her family, the Azoffs and Harry Styles, due to a brief "relationship" on two steps between her and the singer. Protagonist of family's reality shows, she then began a career as a model becoming a supermodel for prestigious brands including Victoria's Secret. Personal friend of the Azoff brothers, Jeff and especially Cameron, who is almost always present at her side, from her public fling with Harry Styles (it's Cameron's the famous post "Back to Reality" photo with Kendall left alone on the yacht after the paparazzi holiday with Harry in the Caribbean on New Year's Eve 2015/16) until now, attending many events and holidays together. Cameron, the youngest son of Irving Azoff, is a photographer, worked on Apple's editorial team, before embarking on fashion, sports, and gaming partnerships, collaborating with brands like Kim Kardashian and others. He is now pursuing a career as a digital influencer in fashion, lifestyle, and travel. He is a childhood friend not only of the Jenner sisters but also of Kaia, daughter of Cindy Crawford and Gerber, who is his father's business partner.
• All the Kardashian-Jenner siblings obviously have friendly family ties with the Azoff family. Two noteworthy details: the Azoffs hosted Khloé's wedding to Lamar Odom, a Lakers basketball player, at their estate in 2009; Azoff's agency represented Travis Scott, rapper and former partner of Kylie Jenner, who is very close to Jeffrey Azoff and his wife.
All these connections in themselves may not be significant, even if they are really consistent. It's not uncommon for one's environment to consist of family friends, friends of friends, business partners. A little less common is for each of these people to be exploitable to maintain or increase the power of Azoff and family.

This section contained objective information, available online, and as accurate as possible. It focuses on what I believe is useful for understanding the influence Irving Azoff can exert on Harry through his history and methods. The next section focuses on Jeffrey Azoff and how, based on the evidence gathered and the connections, I imagine he is able to control and influence Harry Styles and, to some extent, Louis Tomlinson, so it is partially speculative.
