A Swimmerâs âPeriodâ Comment Breaks Taboos In Sports â And In China
Fu Yuanhui, a Chinese swimmer at the Rio Olympics, made headlines this week for telling the world she was on her period.
On Sunday, when she finished fourth in the womenâs 4x100 meter medley relay, an interviewer found her doubled over and grimacing. She asked Fu if she was in pain.
âActually, my period started last night, so Iâm feeling pretty weak and really tired,â Fu told the interviewer in Mandarin, according to an English-subtitled video on Shanghai Expatâs YouTube channel. âBut this isnât an excuse. At the end of the day, I just didnât swim very well.â
The interview turned Fu into an overnight sensation on Weibo, a Chinese social media site, reported the New York Times: She broke the silence around menstruation in sports.
According to The Guardian, one commenter wrote, âIt is a normal physiological phenomenon, so why canât we mention it? Fu Yuanhui is awesome!â
The swimmerâs remark also shed light on shifting Chinese attitudes toward periods.
âIt tells us a lot about whatâs going on in China today,â says Susan Greenhalgh, a professor who focuses on Chinese society at Harvard Universityâs department of anthropology. âThe vocal empowerment of young people and the fact that gender issues are coming to the fore, itâs exciting.â

Carter outthrew favorite Valerie Adams of New Zealand, joining her father as a decorated U.S. Olympian. Men's basketball clinched a narrow win against Serbia in a second game of sloppy defense.
A Black woman, Simone Manuel, won a gold medal swimming and representing a country where 70% of Black youth do not know how to swim and Black youth are 3x more likely to drown than white youth. A Black woman won a gold medal representing a country that just decades ago would have closed down an entire pool for public health reasons for a Black body crossing the gate. A country where a hotel manager threw acid into his pool to kill the Black bodies swimming in it. Itâs so much bigger than sports fam.
