The soybean myth busted by @truthordrought! Ever heard the alternative fact that #vegans are destroying the #Amazon with their #soy? Conflating efficient primary consumption (of soy-based foods) with wasteful secondary consumption (of soy-fed animals) is an obtuse way to falsely blame veganism for the damage caused specifically by non-veganism. Despite producing at least 2x more usable human-edible protein per unit area than any other major vegetable or grain crop (and remaining cholesterol-free and full of fiber when used for #vegan foods), most soybeans are instead reductively squandered as animal feed – including, per Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Issues, 80% of Amazon soy. Per the National Soybean Research Laboratory, soybeans produce 5 to 10 times more protein per acre than land set aside for grazing animals to make milk, and up to 15 times more protein per acre than land set aside for meat production. Per George Monbiot, Guardian journalist & UN Global 500 Award winner for outstanding environmental achievement, were we to eat soy directly rather than meat, the clearance of natural vegetation required to supply us with the same amount of protein would decline by 94%. Per the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), "Limiting consumption of animal-based food products, particularly meat, is one thing people can do to help end this devastating trend [of soybean over-farming]." Note that reducing consumption of animal meat/products, not soy foods, is the effective action people can take. (And eliminating consumption of animal/eat products altogether makes even more sense from every angle.) We logically wouldn’t need to tear down the Amazon or monopolize vast swaths of land in the US and elsewhere to grow so many soybeans if they were just being used for vegan food, because we could grow far less of them using far less land. That's how basic ecology and the scientific law of trophic levels works. But people continue to consider meat-eating aspirational while affiliating beans with poverty. We need to stop buying into this nonsense. The best iPhone shot I could master of the total lunar eclipse and Mars from atop Mt Coot-tha early this morning. The sunrise that followed was equally as incredible! (at Mount Coot-Tha)

What started out as a 10k run along the bay this morning turned into an unanticipated ‘plogging’ (combination of jogging and picking up rubbish) when I diverted my route onto the sand. Initially something caught my eye and as I bent down to pick it up, I spotted more and had over 10 pieces of plastic in my hand in less than a minute (1st trash pic). Thankfully there was a bin nearby and more bins every 50-100 metres, because I kept coming across plastic as I continued along the beach. Each of my trash pics show what I picked up between bins. There was more, but I only had my two hands, so I focused on picking up the pieces of plastic I thought birds would most likely see as food. It’s disturbing to think of how many dead birds stomachs these pieces of plastics have re-emerged from ready to kill again. @plasticoceans @plasticpollutes @plastictides @lifewithoutplastic @trashisfortossers @zero.waste.collective @robjgreenfield (at Brighton Beach Huts)
