I’m sorry, did I somehow miss gushing love for Spike’s heartfelt Chi-raq? This is indeed an EMERGENCY. Why are people talking about forsaken award nominations for rote N.W.A. biopics when a true work of African American high art, CHI-RAQ, is right before us? Teyonah Parris and Nick Cannon (who quietly has built an impressive body of work) deserve nominations for their layered, sexy, powerful acting. Shit, John Cusack (for one scene) and Jennifer Hudson could have garnered nominations. There are slow, didactic moments, but these are overcome by the sheer audacity of the film. By the beautiful Aristophanean poetry and the lyrical strength with which the actors lay it forth. A mainstream movie with actual Godardian moments. Did the sincere work done here get buried underneath the political hype of Spike doing a satire on the murderous crime wave in Chicago? (Many in the Chi were pissed.) I don’t care—let’s honor this film and give it just celebration.
