Polar Bear Swim & Donations for Multiple Sclerosis
So, I’ve been thinking on this for a short while now and I think I’m finally gonna do it.
I’m going to take the plunge this January 1st (a polar bear swim, if you will), in hopes of raising money for the MS Society of Canada. I do the MS Run every year but I don’t think I’ll be able to do so this year.
For those who don’t know what Multiple Sclerosis ( MS ) is, it’s a disease that attacks the nervous system— more specifically, it attacks the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and in the spine. It’s very painful, and in her own words “embarrassing”. She has many problems with her motor skills, many problems speaking. Many problems with her memory and she is in a state of constant pain. Her immune system is shot completely.
My mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 16, and she’s suffered with the pain of it her entire life. She can’t walk “properly” without the aid of crutches, and in actuality she should be wheelchair bound, but she’s the most stubborn and proud and brave woman I’ve ever met in my life. She was told as a teenager that she would never have children, but being as bullheaded as she is, she tried five times— and I was the only one to survive. She says that I am her miracle, but in reality I think I was put here for a reason— and that reason is to care for her when others would not.
I can’t do much on my own. I’ve cared for her since I was old enough to understand that it wasn’t “normal”. Got my first job at 14 in order to help pay for rent and groceries because she can’t work. Missed out on most everything a normal teenager is supposed to do in order to care for her and keep her alive. I can do all the MS Runs I want and I can volunteer all I want, but it will never be enough in my eyes.
So, this year I want to present her with something so she knows that she’s important and that I’ll never give up.
TL;DR I want to raise money for the MS Society of Canada in honour of my mother. I’ll be taking donations to my paypal: [email protected]
until the evening of December 31st, sending every single last penny donated to the MS Society on January 1st and jumping off a dock into a freezing cold lake. ( I’ve heard the shock and cold jolts are similar to the electric sensations that run through the spines of many MS sufferers. )
The donation option I’m choosing will send a card to my mother’s address, telling her the donations were made in her honour. Wouldn’t you like something like that to start off your New Year?
If you cannot donate, then I’d appreciate a signal boost if you can! I’ll be video recording the plunge into the lake, and when she receives her card I’ll be sure to take a photo of her with it. Knowing her, she’d want to thank every single one of you individually!
Plus, I’ll be doing the plunge as Sherlock Holmes, so if that isn’t a little bit of an extra motivation to donate or signal boost, then I don’t know what else to do!
Thank you all in advance, for donations and/or signal boosting!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays everyone!
ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT GUYS AND I HAVEN’T EVEN REACHED $100. THAT WAS MY GOAL. THIS IS FOR MY MOTHER.
all i want for Christmas is to reach my goal of $100 in donations. if you guys need picture proof, i can provide it. i’m just getting all sorts of flustered .__.
so i did raise $200 for the MS Society of Canada, and not only did i run in the lake at 9:30am on Jan. 1st, but my buddy Joe did as well ( as he drunkenly promised me the night before he would donate $50 and jump in with me ). my phone is currently out of commission so i've been trying to upload it to youtube to share, but THIS HERE is going to have to suffice for now. ):
TL;DR WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
