Hi I just wanted to share this Beautiful photo of John protecting Paul with a worried expression as they leave Portsmouth Guildhall in 1963 the gig was cancelled and was rescheduled for in December of that year. I agree John does look very concerned.

I wrote an academic paper on the Beatles innovative period last year, and I remember reading something that I wish I could remember. It had to do with Paul walking John home or just being with him or something. It said something like "John and Paul had already grown apart by that point, but neither needed to say so; it was enough for Paul to support him that night." I might be imagining this, but maybe someone here can point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hi. I first read that like two years ago and there doesn't seem to be any information about it. I am afraid that it seems to be a fake quote, probably taken out of a fanfic somewhere just like the one of the star Mary Julia. And the same as the one where we're told that while he was dying he asked the ambulance driver to pump up the volume because "All my loving" was playing in the radio.
The true button story is the one of the "I love Paul" button, where Harry Nilsson comments in an interview that he's just seen a girl who saw John and that John was wearing an I Love Paul button so the girl asked him why was he wearing that button, and John's answer was "Because I love Paul". I'm not sure where he got that button, but John collected all kinds of Beatles memorabilia, so it could have been that he bought it himself, though the thought of Paul giving the button to John is quite adorable, it's also not very likely, I think. Maybe some people would disagree with me. Or maybe he did.. Hard to tell.
There's a lot of hearsay around them. I've read that Paul gave John a copy of a first edition of Alice In Wonderland, which was John's favorite and that apparently John counted it among his dearest treasures... But it's never been mentioned anywhere. Not by John, or Paul, or any biographer. The source was apparently a chick John met in a library and he told her that. I've heard that Paul also gave John jewelry sometimes.
So, I think that the quote you mention was maybe based on this second quote of the girl and the I love Paul incident.
However, if anyone has some reliable information about this quote I would appreciate it a lot if they could share it.

It’s from one of those picture montages that Paul shows during his concerts. I think this was shown during “Here today”.
John’s “If I Fell” was a songwriting breakthrough for him: his first forthright expression of the soft core of emotional vulnerability that he otherwise sought to mask with bravado, insouciance and wit…From the moment Paul’s voice joins John’s on the stately, rising melody, the whole tenor of the track changes. Their two parts do not move in simple, parallel motion (like a couple holding hands); instead their voices perform an intricate courtship dance, ranging from a sixth to a third apart, alternately closing and widening the distance between them. “If I Fell” is a love song that seeks to move beyond the shaky ground of infactuation - beyond the very idea of falling (like the chords in the introdution) in love. Hello, did Paul ever say, as far as you know, whom the song This One is about? Are there any tips other than some of the lyrics (in my interpretation) that it might be aimed at John?
I don't have the exact quote around right now, but there is an audio where he talks about this interview. I vaguely remember reading about it in other interviews but I don't have the quotes around right now.

He does mention John, and in some way I've always seen it as a song about John, though he mentions that is more a general thing of not being able to say those you love "I love you" on time. In this short clip he sort of as pizzaandfairytales says: projects issues onto George... he tends to do that a lot... lol. Especially when it comes to John he projects himself on George.

The really strange thing was that I went to work that morning somehow knowing Paul would ultimately show up — despite what had happened. Of course, from the point of view of his Liverpool upbringing, the best way to deal with something like that is to keep right on doing what you’d normally do. It helps to take your mind off it — being with friends, I suppose, even though it did occur to me that he might have just as easily rung up and cancelled the session. I remember the first thing he said to me was, “I just don’t know what to think.” He was obviously physically shaken, and even at the best of times wasn’t really too articulate when it came to expressing how he felt about things. After one of the takes Paul and I were just hanging out, leaning up against AIR [Studio]’s huge floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Oxford Circus, when I happened to notice this dark green truck going by that said LENNON FURNISHINGS or something like that. “Oh God, look at that,” I said, and he just sort of broke down, you know? “I’ll tell you one thing, man,” he said, “I’ll never fall out with anyone again in my life for that amount of time and face the possibility of them dying before I get a chance to square it with them.” After that I never consciously mentioned anything about it. If he wanted to talk about it he did, and if he didn’t, well, he didn’t. Everybody in the world was very hurt by John’s death, but especially Paul McCartney.

i was wondering if you know where i can find a quote that john said about "if i fell" from what i remember he said something along the lines of "it's about - it's not about cyn" ?
Sure, it's an audio from an interview with playboy in 1980. I've seen it quoted in several books I've read, and the audio is right here

Michael Lindsay Hogg (the man who directed both “Let it Be” and “Two of Us”) secretly recorded John, Paul, Yoko, Linda, and Ringo talking while they were filming “Let it Be”. It’s super fascinating. They discuss what they should do about George, since he was practically not in the group at that point. Then there’s this little tidbit, where John talks about how insecure he feels next to Paul, cause Paul always has it together:
JOHN: Because you–‘cause you seem to have got it all, you see.
PAUL: Mm. JOHN: I know that, because of the way I am, like when we were in Mendips, like I said— “Do you like me?” Or whatever it is. I’ve always–uh, played that one. So. PAUL: Yeah. YOKO: Go back to George. What are we going to do about George?

June 4th, 1968 (EMI Studios): While The Beatles are in the middle of recording and mixing ‘Revolution 1’, Yoko Ono observes them in the adjoining room, recording her thoughts and feelings in a stream of consciousness.
YOKO: After the initial embarrassment, then – um, now Paul is being very nice to me. He’s nice, and a – a very, um, str– on the level, straight sense. Like, um, whenever there’s something happening at Apple, he explains to me, as if I should know, [inaudible] and things like that. And also whenever there’s something like they need a light man or something like that, he asks me if I know of anybody in the art world, and things like that.
And like, um, I can see that he’s just now suddenly changing his attitude, like he’s being – he’s treating me with respect. Not because it’s me – but because I belong to John. I hope that’s what it is, because that would be nice. And I feel like he’s my younger brother or something like that. I’m sure that if he had been a woman or something, he would have been a great threat – because there’s something definitely very strong between John and Paul.
And, um – and probably among those three people of George and Ringo and Paul, Paul is the only one that I can sort of feel the vibration [from]. Like, sort of sense it, you know, that something is among that. ‘Cause Ringo and George, I just can’t communicate. I mean, I’m sure that George and – I’m really sure that they’re both very nice people, but that’s not the point… I think that’s because being, uh, [because of John, Paul, and me] being air signs, like Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius.
PAUL: Look, John was a great guy, great sense of humour and I’d do it all again. I’d go through it all again, and have him slagging me off again just because he was so great; those are all the down moments, there was much more pleasure than has really come out. I had a wonderful time, with one of the world’s most talented people. We had all that craziness. But if someone took one of your wedding photos and put “funeral” on it, as he did on that manuscript, you’d feel a bit sorry for the guy. I tell you what, if I’d ever done that to him, he would’ve just hit the roof. But I just sat through it all like mild-mannered Clark Kent. SALEWICZ: This was hurting you, presumably. PAUL: Not half. SALEWICZ: When did you actually get a perspective on it? PAUL: I still haven’t. It’s still inside me. John was lucky. He got all his hurt out. I’m a different sort of a personality. There’s still a lot inside me that’s trying to work it out.
