McKayla Sheldrake

My work is inspired by things I like, and things happening in my world. Honestly I just make a lot of art so I can have something to put on my apartment walls. I really dig vintage photography, and I am ultra-inspired by the colorways of 1960′s and 70′s. 

I grew up in Milwaukie, right outside Portland. It really was a perfect place to feel teenage angst. Sometimes my high school felt like one of those 80′s teen movies, and I think those years helped me to develop the lens that I see the world thru. 

I have funneled my creative energy towards many projects. In high school I directed plays, and I would stay up into the wee hours of the morning making costumes and props with dollar tree crap and spray paint. I would drive around town in my 1972 Super Beetle and scour thrift shops for costumes. It was awesome. Now that I’m in college, I absolutely adore putting together costumes for halloween. I love making something dope out of virtually nothing. DIY or die, baby.

Fast forward to last summer, I had the most amazing opportunity to work as a wardrobe intern for IFC’s Portlandia. Being an intern is a great experience. It really is like in the movies, I did many errands, holding like a gagillion cups of coffee at one time, and it sort of felt like a dream come true. I never realized there were professional stylists doing the same type of work I did when I was trying to put together a stage production, but on a huge scale. It was incredibly inspiring to see creative people working hard and making something big happen. I learned so much and I am so so grateful.

I took these on one cold day over winter break. We were at our friend’s house making a bonfire, and it started snowing. It was kind of magical. We walked to the store and bought twizzlers and cheap beer. 

Over winter break I shot a lot of film, and recently I took it to the cute photo shop by my house to get it developed. I seriously need to learn how to develop. Honestly I have no excuse because I work at a craft center and there is a darkroom there, and hardly no one uses it! Except for the old people who don’t go to the university who come in. Hahaha. 

These are some of my favorite shots off this roll, of my best friend Anastasia. My friends and I had too much time off school, and it snowed, so we spent a lot of time in Eugene just causing a ruckus in the snow, and watching Always Sunny.

 the original is pen and ink, the blue one was printed from the original on a riso machine, and the colored one is the original that I ended up watercoloring, for kicks and giggles.

each week we were assigned a word, and asked to collage on an index card inspired by the assigned word, without using any representational imagery, which was difficult, but it got easier with practice. (though I kinda cheated on our last one :) )
