First of all, credit where credit is due: if you know your comics you’ll know that this image is based on John Buscema’s cover to which has some of the greatest, most dynamic poses ever put on a comic book cover. Easily one of my favorites of all time. Incidentally, I think this is the first piece where I directly reference another piece of art.

So yeah, Mario isn’t actually fighting Bastion (which is the island hub in the game) but, because indie devs are eager to leave their lead characters unnamed, I went with a title that made sense.

This took a long time. A really long time. I tried to capture the look of Bastion’s gorgeous concept art and it took a few tries to backwards engineer it and have it look as close to the real deal as my limited abilities could muster. I loved Bastion, by the way, and I wanted to make this a hammer on hammer fight (hence the Hammer Bros. suit) but I just had to squeeze in my go-to weapons in the game, the spear and pistols.

My only real regret is that I feel the Kid should’ve been on the ground. We see Mario in every fight and the Kid’s pose doesn’t really show off his character design much. I realized this once I had already fully inked Mario so I let it go. Something to be mindful of the next time, I suppose.
