I have recently been watching the Hetalia musicals, I found recordings of the first 4, the third one (the new world) only had Chinese subtitles so, (with the help of Google translate), I made a very rough subtitle file for it which I thought I would post here just in case anyone is interested.

before phili was colonized by spain, china had traded a lot with the kingdoms and sultanates who would become phili’s mothers: this included tondo, maynila, cebu, sulu, maguindanao, etc

all of the representations for the pre-colonial philippine kingdoms were women, and generally assumed the role of the babaylan or shaman. as typical for babaylans, they were highly respected and deemed on par with the noble class. when phili was born, he was revered as an especially prolific asog, or as one of the male but very feminine babaylans

phili himself was born from the pasig river, and each of the kingdoms and sultanates took turns in bringing him to their houses and taking care of him for years at a time. still, tondo and maynila were practically his primary caretakers just because of proximity

so when phili first met china, he was just a small child hiding behind the skirts of his mothers and it was his first time to meet a foreign nation. he was terrified because he could sense that china wasn’t human like him, but didn’t give the same sense of comfort and home as his mothers; he thought that china was an engkanto, a powerful spirit that would take his soul if he wasn’t careful

china eventually won him over with good food, many of which he still considers his favorites today

phili can speak mandarin and cantonese conversationally, but he is most fluent in philippine hokkien, the philippine version of the hokkien language spoken in southern china. he especially loves chatting and gossiping with taiwan in hokkien together!

don’t tell spain but these days, phili can probably speak more chinese than spanish. he hasn’t had to speak spanish in almost a century, but chinese is something he’s had with him ever since he was a child

phili calls china ahia, which means older brother in philippine hokkien

they take the time to have tea together, with phili serving china of course. china always makes sure to bring tikoy, and he always overstays his welcome too. phili usually calls hong kong after to vent.

Going back to this scene was painful! If you noticed China’s face at the fourth panel in the stageplay SHOWS REAL PAIN (HE BLINKED SEVERAL TIMES TOO FUCK)–THE AWKWARD PAUSE MADE IT WORSE I TELL YOU! While England got drunk by pouring vodka in his tea hence the burst of: “PAY YOUR RESPECTS TO YOUR BROTHER” kind of a thing idk, and the way he pushed Japan afterwards was painful to watch j esus freakin chirst–

I'm just geeking out over the Hetalia Seiyuu Events.

Mainly, looking at the seiyuus and just... overanalyzing the fuck out of what they do:

Sugiyama-san presses his stomach when he sings. He also tends to close his eyes and make little hand flourishes. Yes I've watched this special too many times.

No, Japan is not sorry, and neither is Takahashi-san. Also, unlike any other singers in the special, he's the only one who looks at the camera when singing.

Inoue Go takes the award for Most Awkward Bean. He's followed closely by Sugiyama Noriaki.

Keep in mind, though, that his squinting is a result of not wearing his glasses for the majority of the show (why tho).

The award for Peppiest Bean goes to Kanada Aki. She feels you with sunshine and serotonin, wtf. The award is only contested by Takahashi Hiroki and Kaida Yuki.

There are two Hirokis in the cast.

The award for Shyest Bean is disputed by Sugiyama-san, Takato-san, Inoue-san and Kousaka-san. Ultimately it goes to Kousaka 'cause he's a very polite boi.

Takato-san tends to answer in-character. The times he answers for himself in both events are few.

Konno Jun: *strangled cat noises*

The most radical differences between the seiyuus' normal speaking voices and their characters' voices are between Namikawa-san and North Italy, Takahashi-san and Japan, Konishi-san and America and Canada, Sasanuma-san and Austria, Kousaka-san and Prussia, and (obviously, as they play children) Kanada-san and Chibitalia/Chibiromano and Konno-kun and HRE.

The others don't change their normal voices much. Germany has a deeper, more guttural version of Yasumoto-san's voice, Russia's voice is a softer, higher-pitched version of Takato-san's voice, China's voice is a deeper, raspier version of Kaida's voice, and Sealand's voice is a more childish-sounding version of Ai-san's voice. The most egregious cases are, however, Sugiyama-san and England and Onosaka-san and France: their characters' voices are pretty much their normal speaking voices. The only thing that changes is the inflection: England's voice is usually full of doubt and/or pride, while France usually uses a smooth tone that quickly turns melodramatic.

All that said, Namikawa's voice is pretty similar to Romano's. The only difference is that Romano's is slightly deeper and a bit whinier.

Seriously, though, Takahashi-san has really profound reflections on the impact of Hetalia and the sense of community art builds.

Yasumoto-san speaks too fast. The only reason he doesn't play America is because his voice is too deep.

Kanada-san does a mean Prussia. I'd give her the job.

Namikawa-san also plays a decent America.

Sugiyama-san could have easily played Italy. Once again, he doesn't need to change his voice much to sound pretty much like Namikawa's take. In fact, it's pretty much his normal voice, only slightly higher-pitched and smoother.

Yasumoto-san tends to make circular motions with his left arm when he speaks. He also tends to overheat, if his taking off his jacket in both events is any indication (other than for fanservice).

I've learnt a lot of random Japanese with these events, as well as tidbits of Japanese culture (Hosshan, Kao's Expert Theatre, etc.).

Throughout the two events, two seiyuus wear crosses around their necks: Ai-san and Yasumoto-san.
