What if one time a heist goes wrong and one of the guys (Charlie? Matt?) gets hurt very badly--to the point that Jake takes one look at it and knows that he can't save them.

EXCEPT remember how early on I was talking about whatever portal exists between present day and the 1920s kinda opens in regular intervals and Jake has been meaning to go back but he never got around to it, you know? And maybe this heist gone wrong happens to coincide with the portal opening so Jake thinks if he takes the wounded party to present day, with modern medicine in a proper hospital, they have a shot.

Whether he is the hurt one or not Charlie definitely tags along too and they do that and the injured person is fine--they get saved but it's just a lengthy recovery.

But so the fic is just Charlie whether he is the one who is hurt or there to support Matt, getting to see what Jake's world is like. Because Jake has been talking about all this stuff but its very different to see it in person.

I'm talking like all the humor of Charlie versus computers, Charlie FASCINATED by the really fast cars nearly killing them, Charlie meeting Jake's family with the "so what do you do?" "He is in...security" shenanigans. This should also be after they started dating and so I'm also talking about Charlie bewildered by pda between gay couples and how it doesnt seem to be a big deal. And Charlie feeling inadequate because he can't keep up with the details of this world the way Jake's friends can, doesn't think he can get Jake the way they do.

But also as the injured party gets better it's clear that they really dont fit in present day? And they want to go back when the portal opens again but also now Charlie understands just how different Jake's world is, how this is exactly what Jake must feel like in the 1920s. So can he ask him to come back? Does he stay instead? Because if they dont do one of those things they will never see each other again. But he feels so wildly out of place in this century.

To make the stakes higher imagine there is some cost to time travel--each time you do it its rougher and rougher on your body. So Jake has a sense that if he goes back he might not be able to survive another trip to present day, meaning if he goes it's for good. And beyond Charlie the Bruins have kind of become his family too, in some odd way he kind of fits back then.
