Due to the suppression of Azerbaijani language in South Azerbaijan, currently under the jurisdiction of Iran, poets were simply not allowed to engage in poetry in their own languages. But this particular poem was written in Azerbaijani, for a heartbreaking reason.

Shahriyar in his 30’s fell in love with this girl called Süreyya, to whom he referred as “Pari” in his poems later on. But the girl was already promised to an incumbent who was holding a position in İranian palace and was quite corrupted. She then gets separated from her family and her home and taken to the palace for good. Knowing this, Shahriyar longs for one last meet up with her, on a set date in a street called “Behcet Abad”. She won’t show up, and Shahriyar spends the entire night waiting for her in that street corner. With a broken heart, he could only express his deep grief in his own language.

"Everyone is asleep there’s only me and god here,

Scared stiff by the dawn, in case she won’t make it by the dawn,

Counting stars, pleading them not to show up before she’s seen on the street”
