You cannot inspect the origin of an act directly; motives are invisible, and the simulation can fake any visible sign of depth. But you can run a test: remove all symbolic payment and see whether the act still occurs. An act sourced from the ego β the recognition-built layer β cannot survive this removal, because that layer acts in order to be paid; unpaid, it has no fuel. An act that occurs anyway must be drawing on something that doesn't run on payment β the uncovered stratum. So the absence of reward functions exactly like a diagnostic in medicine or a control in an experiment: it doesn't cause the result, it isolates the variable. The unpaid act is a positive test result for subterranean origin.
