personal theory: animal crossing is about the afterlife. a child has died and finds themselves alone in a serene world of mystical creatures. modes of transport from one place to another feature heavily, most notably trains. the world is static and mostly unchangeable, aside from the comings and goings of other souls. a religious shrine dominates the town center. lastly, there's mom. she sends prayers and well wishes on a regular basis, but does not - indeed, cannot - ever receive an answer.
