Drawing People of African Descent: Tutorial Compilation
This was originally a reblog of another post. Since reblogs might not show up for some people, I decided to just post this list on its own.
Black Panther is, undoubtedly, a good movie, if the good reviews are anything to go by. Lots of fan artists have churned out their own interpretations of the characters. This is absolutely awesome, or at least it should be. However, I see that some controversy on whether or not characters are being whitewashed have also appeared. I donāt like seeing people being aggressive and condescending and accusatory toward each other. However, some artistsā renderings of the characters do leave something to be desired. In that case, I think itās important for them to know what theyāre doing wrong, and what they could do to correct these imperfections
This is why Iāve compiled this list of tutorials. I am responsible for none of them, so credit where credit is due!

i keep seeing people redrawing stuff today and iām tryin to get out of an art block, so i redrew this picture from 2012!!
for the anon that wanted more head angles. Itās not explained well, I apologize for that but maybe this will help a little bit.Ā
I made a thing! I was thinking about this for a few days - because I realized that when I was young, I was also frustrated about being given the same advice over and over - without really knowing what it meant!!
Hereās 5 techniques which I have done before which have helped me grow as an artist, which are good for 5-minute warmups or just straight up challenges for your sketchbook!Ā
Obviously, these are not the ONLY techniques - theyāre just the ones I find most fun! And maybe theyāre not the mostĀ ācorrectā ones out there, but itās better than another comic about practicing more, right?Ā
Good luck to everyone on their drawings!
Hello! I've loved art all my life and I have to say in pretty good at the subjects I know but I have never been able to draw anatomy of human and animals! I am so jealous of your talent. Do you have any recommendations for how to start practicing?
Yes! Yes I do
First off I always recommend Proko,
Ā https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDgyQjNFVQk&list=PLtG4P3lq8RHFBeVaruf2JjyQmZJH4__ZvĀ
He does an AMAZING series on human anatomy going over each muscle, its form and what it does. And itās FREE. Anatomy can be overwhelming and confusing when you first start, so many muscles! but I found in invaluable to getting your head in that space to understanding how to look at the different forms. Definitely check him out.
Elliot Goldfinger does a wonderful series on both animal and human anatomy, the books arenāt badly priced and I like them because they are thorough and not stylized, they are straight up charts so I donāt worry about them influencing my own style.Ā
Terryl Whitlatch is by far my fav creature artist. She also does amazing books on animal anatomy and design, as well she has an excellent schoolism course you can subscribe to. I recommend them as an investment
Andrew Loomis is I think one of the most solid in human anatomy, his books are relatively in expensive, and most of the content is easy to find online at this point. His method continues to be one of the fundamental ways of drawings.Ā
and above all else PHOTO REFERENCES and ANATOMY CHARTS. When I draw I have an anatomy chart up, along with some photos. I try to avoid looking at other artists when I work because I dont want to pick up on their personal interpretations, I would rather create my own. (I will look at artists when I am not drawing and if I see something I like will try to remember it for when I pull out my own sketchbook.)Ā
Anyhow hope this helps! Good luck!

Tutorial and or tips in color studies?
Hi there! Sorry to keep you waiting on this ask!
I do have another post about landscape painting which overlaps slightly with this. But here Iāll talk specifically about the observational color studies I like to do. Other artists might have different ways of approaching them (and I still have a lot to learn myself), but these are some of the ideas Iāve found useful.
1. Donāt seek perfectionObservational color studies are just that ā studies. Sketches. Note-taking to reference later. Theyāre not supposed to be complete paintings, so you shouldnāt feel pressured to make them āperfectā. I like posting them sometimes (and hopefully you like seeing them) but there are TONS of messy, scribbly studies I havenāt posted anywhere. Theyāre primarily a tool to help me learn, and if messy studies help me learn, so be it!
2. Simplify your shapesSo how do you avoid getting overwhelmed and lost in the details? Focus on the BIG IDEA. Decide what is most important to include in the study and leave out everything else. Start with big shapes, and add details at the very end, if you have time. Personally, Iām often interested in the sky and the color clouds become when light passes through. So I might make the study about the clouds and ignore buildings/details on the ground. or Iāll add only a very simple ground plane. Other times, Iāll rearrange a composition to include all the important information (like making an object bigger or smaller, or bringing two objects closer together).
3. Step by stepIt helps to find a good workflow, especially when you have to quickly prioritize what information to include. This is relevant especially when youāre painting something like a sunset, when the light changes RAPIDLY and youāll have only 3, 4, 5 minutes to put your colors down. For me, this usually means I build my study from background to foreground: sky, clouds, ground plane, background shapes, foreground shapes. Since I work on iPad Pro, I also keep those parts separated out into layers. In the case of those quick sunset studies, I also observe the parts I havenāt painted yet in case the lighting changes enough that Iāll need to work from memory.
4. Some fundamentals to keep in mind:
Value structure: Even though these are color studies, value plays a major role in the colors youāre observing. Pay attention to the difference in value between subjects. Sometimes this can solve color-related problems when your study seems āoffā somehow. (For example, maybe that sky isnāt as light as you think it is? A darker value might mean painting a more vibrant color.)
Lighting setup: Identify the different light sources in the environment. Is it cloudy and overcast? Sunny? Are you indoors, with multiple different light sources? A little study about lighting theory can really help you know what colors to look for in different lighting conditions. For example, in overcast light, youāll see more of the objectsā local color, while in bright sunlight youāll see a strong direct light (the sun), blue diffused light on shadows and top-facing planes (from the blue sky), and a warm bounce light (from sunlight reflecting off the ground). Will forever recommend James Gurneyās book āColor and Lightā for help learning this.
Materials: Different materials reflect light sources in different ways. Being aware of how light passes through or reflects off different materials can help you understand the colors youāre seeing.
5. Going beyondAs you become more comfortable making observational studies, the more you might wish to push them even further by not just copying from life but communicating a feeling. A few ways you might accomplish this:
Exaggerate your colors. Suppose you see a hint of color you wouldnāt normally expect to find, such as notes of purpose or red near the horizon of an otherwise blue sky. Try making it brighter/bolder than you really see it. Bump up the saturation, maybe. This is a delicate balance, as you donāt want to exaggerate to the point where the colors become garish. But putting emphasis in certain places can remind yourself, or show whoeverās looking at your study, that you found certain details interesting.
Think about mood. A color script from an animated film follows the emotional beats of the story. As youāre making your studies, consider: how does this moment feel to me? Take a cloudy scene, for instance. Is it cold and miserable? Windy, full of movement and energy? Calm? Dark and ominous? A moment of anticipation or hope with the clouds about the break apart? Each of those conveys a completely different mood. So you might decide upon one and push your color palette to support that idea.
Donāt just copy: communicate. This last one is a bit of an abstract idea I need an example to explain:
This sunset study here gave me difficulty because it involved not just color but the properties of light. The sun didnāt actually appear white to me - it appeared a bright red/pink color, glowing brighter than the sky around it. But that wasnāt something I could reproduce, because if I only painted the color, it wouldnāt appear glowing and would blend into the rest of the sky. Instead, I had to think critically: how do I communicate the brightness of this sun? In the end, I opted to make the sun white, with the color I actually observed the sun to be surrounding it.
On my Instagram, Iāve posted a lot of process videos to accompany my studies, if that interests anyone! Theyāre always second image on the studiesā posts.
I hope you find these thoughts helpful!Ā
since Iāve drawing a lot of glowy magic/fire things lately,,,,hereās a tutorial with brush settings!! :0

So you might be saying: Lion why a guide on drawing black people? Well young blood itās because a lot of people cantā¦seemā¦to drawā¦black people..Amazing I know.Ā
Racist (caricatures) portrayals of black people have been around forever, and to this day people canāt seem to draw black people like they are human. If your artwork resembles any of the above even remotely your artwork is racist and offensive. If you try to excuse that as a stylistic choice youāre not only a terrible artist, but racist too!!! Congrats.
Whitewashing is also a problem. A lot of people refuse to draw black features on canonly black characters. While this example isnāt colored, lightening the skin-tone of a character is also considered whitewashing. So lets start with features!
Now all black people have different noses thats a no-brainer, but black noses tend to have flatter bridges, and wider nostrils. Please stay from triangular anime noses and small button noses. Your drawings should not depict black people with abnormally large noses. (Especially if you do not draw other characters this way)
If you feel like the way you draw lips on black characters is offensive or resembles a caricature,it probably does and you should change it. ABSOLUTELY AVOID PLACING LIPS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FACE.Ā
Hair is so diverse! Please get used to drawing braids, locs, kinks and coils! If you can learn to draw ringlets and long waves you can learn how to draw black hairstyles.
Add clips! Learn how to draw baby-hairs and never be afraid to add color Pinterest and Google are free my dudes! Also try using square brushes for blocking in coils.
OK THATāS ALL YOU GUYS

Drawing Heads and Faces: Cheekbones
Iāve found that drawing the head starts to make a lot more sense once you start thinking about cheekbones and cheeks, and how the fit into the head structure.
You might be aware of the Mysterious Indent that Looks Good Next to the Outer Part of the Eye, or the Mystery Indent for short.Ā
Drawing a Mystery Indent may serve you fine if you only draw the head from flat angles, but it falls apart when you get adventurous.
Why isnāt this making sense anymore?
Drawing aĀ āMystery Indentā is an attempt to imply cheekbones without knowing how they actually incorporate into the skull, and this is why it looks so unconvincing when you use it to draw the head in anything other than ¾ view.
The cheekbones wrap around the head and eye sockets from above the bridge of the nose. Ā The concave you draw if you draw the āMystery Indentā is a misunderstanding.Ā Ā There is no concave. Ā You should instead be thinking of this as where the eye socket/brow overlaps the (convex!) cheekbone.
Compare the cheekbones on both sides for placement. Ā They should match up and correspond with each other.
(Knowing cheekbone structure helps when drawing gaunt characters, because their cheekbones may stick out. Ā Remember to compare the cheekbone placement on both sides!)
* This is part of a much larger tutorial Iām working on about head, face, and facial feature structure.Ā Hopefully more to come eventually?
NOTE: one type of fold will rarely appear on its own - they interact with each other quite a bit! for example, spiral folds might define the outline of a pant leg, while the interior folds might be zig-zag folds.
iām trying to re-learn how to draw clothing, so i made this little guide to the most common shapes of folds that appear. hope it helps someone else too!
