Well, I'm finally back after quite some time. It's been busy, but I should be able to post on a more consistent basis.
Anyway, I decided to try out the Stencyl engine. I really like that practically anything 2D is possible, and at that quite simple, to create in the engine. Editing the code can be finicky and slightly irritating, but that's my only real problem with the engine. I've been up to a little experiment in the engine that I might make into a full game in the future.
So finally, October is upon us once again. Last year, I entered a competition in which you would make a game in one month with two constraints: 1.Your game either utilized only the mouse or one button on the keyboard, and 2. you must play as the villain. Technically, I entered two games in the competition; one titled "Lunacy" which was far beyond the scope of what I could finish with such a time constraint. In only 3 nights, I created another game called "Seven" a game in which you throw stakes at seven different demons. You had no direct movement control, moving was done automatically. After almost a year, taking in what was said about the game, thinking about a new direction for the game and I think I can finally make Seven into the game I really want it to be. So this month, I'll be doing just that.
Nope, thatās not a joke. There is currently a petition on Change.org asking Microsoft to do a 180 to their earlier 180 (or an Xbox 360 - har har) regarding the Xboneās DRM policies. There are currently more than 3,000 signatures.

Itās weird, but 3/4 of this I didnāt learn in college. I know most of these things from online, going to panels at conventions, or directly from a devās mouth. Regardless, these are great tips. Hope these help some of you out there planning to become game devs.

A lot of this is a solid reminder of why I never want to work in the bigger games āindustry.ā
But even so, there are a lot good pieces of advice in here.
A game that fails due to over-ambition is still better than a game that fails because itās beep-boop, committee-designed sludge coughed out by a corporation staffed by robots. At least ambition implies that you have some kind of soul, rather than a CPU with fistfuls of money stuffed into it.

Here, game designer Sophie Houlden gets it exactly right, and says what I want to say all the time. It doesnāt matter which tool people use to make their game, and snobby, elitist programmer types that look down on newbies and code-light engines are doing a disservice to the medium. As part of a Google discussion, the president noted that computers and video games in particular are now a substantial force in exciting young people enough to learn, and that is something he is keen to tap into.

Anna Anthropy, acclaimed designer of games such as Dys4ia and author of Rise of the Video Game Zinesters, thinks that game development should be blown wide open. According to Zinesters, Anthropy wants everyone in society ā particularly the outcasts ā to be making games, so that the actual opinions of the underrepresented become the majority.

No time like the present. Make a Game in 2013.
2013 Goals
So the new year is here and everyone seems to be posting about what they want to achieve in 2013. I might as well do the same. Besides, it's been awhile since I really updated much of anything.
Complete "The Girl with no Arms". I'm not expecting to 100% fully develop and polish the game in one year, though I can try. I've said it many times before, but I just love this project so much and I really want to complete it.
Participate in One Game A Month. One game a month is a challenge to develop one game every month for one year. I like to challenge myself to "time trials" occasionally to see how quickly I can put together a game without getting sloppy, rushing, creating something too involved or overwhelming. Because I have very strict rules about quality over quantity, I'll probably make a tasteful pack of small games over the year.
Learn some hardware development. Hardware has interested me for awhile now. I've had an urge to build my very own custom game pad and perhaps one of those lovely DIY arcade multi-game cabinets.
Take a year in programming. I want to work in AAA video games as a designer. This is normally not a big problem, but because of how industry works and businesses function; there is potential that I could wake up one day and not be working in AAA video games anymore. It happens, that's just industry. So it's best to have a backup, just in case things (inevitably) go awry. After working on "The Girl with No Arms" for 2 months and trying out that LĆVE framework, I've discovered I kind of love programming. I often find myself designing things like enemies, objects and UI elements around what I write in the code. Sometimes I just find a random framework and see what I can do with it. I'm also interested in learning how to write frameworks.
Learn C#. I gave Lua a try in 2012 and aside from a few minor irritating idiosyncrasies here and there, I like it. Now I want to try out some C#. It looks cool and I happen to have a game development kit that utilizes it.
So that's all I want to do this year. I hope you all have a great new year and accomplish a lot.
One Game a Month
The One Game a Month event sounds interesting, but Iām just not sure if I really have the time to do something like that. Iād have to make very small games, or learn something like Unity.
Maybe if I do this, I should have some overarching theme, or purpose for them.
IE, all little educational game concepts, and such, or different small action RPGs made with the silly little framework I did in December.
I think Iām down for this. Signing up right now.
My January game is totally going to be Slipnot: The true-or-false game of, āIs that a real Slipknot song title or one I just made up!ā
I guess Iām doing the One Game A Month project. This will be fun, especially with my silly ideas!
