Okay, yeah, I like the idea of Dipper Pines/Dib Membrane friendship and/or relationship but not just from the point of the similarity of, y'know, “Hey look these are both dorky kids who love the supernatural and conspiracies!” but actually... especially from the aspects where they differ.
I mean, sure, Dipper and Dib both like supernatural stuff, but in Dipper’s case… well, it’s safe to assume that his interest in supernatural stuff stretches far before his arrival in Gravity Falls considering his entire life plan revolves around that interest
And also, like, the fact that he found a weird book in the woods talking about zombies and mind demons and conspiracies and believed it immediately
But, y’know, all things considered, Dipper is also pretty ‘normal’ about his weird interests. It’s not like he surrounds himself with them constantly or always talking about them (for example, the dialogue in ‘Tourist Trapped’ implies he and Soos didn’t know about their shared interest in the weirdness of Gravity Falls until the Gnome Boyfriend Incident)
He only really becomes proper ‘obsessed’ with it when he is in Gravity Falls where his interest in the paranormal is validated and especially when the Journal starts feeding into his paranoia and giving him really juicy mysteries to sink his mental teeth into.
But even then, he is not even near the level of Dib Membrane
Like, does Dipper not bringing up supernatural stuff in Soos’ vicinity until the events of “Tourist Trapped” mean anything actually? This is happening pretty shortly after Dipper and Mabel even arrived at Gravity Falls, maybe he just didn’t have a chance to openly talk about this interest of his until then. And that might be true, but at the same time I would like to point out that even in that short timeframe - there is no chance Dib Membrane wouldn’t have info-dumped in length about Paranormal Bullshit multiple times before that point. And that’s even before Zim got into the picture and gave his supernatural obsession a truckload of validation and motivation!
Next to Mabel, Dipper is a Paranormal Fanatic, next to Dib, Dipper Pines is just a normal kid who thinks ghosts are cool.
So basically, Dib interacting with Dipper is like… when you are super into a show or a hobby or something and you meet another fellow fan, but as you start trying to geek-out together it slowly dawns on you that they’re ‘obsessed’ with it in the sense of “oh yeah I love this show a lot lol” and you’re on the level of “this show has utterly consumed my psyche”. Like they have a favorite episode but you have mentally ranked all of the show’s episodes from best to worst and can recite the whole list from memory, they try and share with you a fan-theory and your brain immediately tells you which minor details in which forgotten episode totally debunk it, you have spent so much time Discoursing about the show that you start explaining to them their own arguments before they can finish them. This is basically Dib’s experience of talking Paranormal with Dipper.
And from Dipper’s perspective, this is like the experience of thinking you’re a super-dedicated weirdo to your fandom or your hobby… until you finally meet a Fellow Fan and it suddenly dawns on you that you were actually a Normie Casual All Along. Like being known as the Bug Lover in your regular circles and suddenly meeting someone who is basically an entomologist in all but name. You start talking and you suddenly realize you have no fucking clue what they’re talking about. This is what it must’ve been like for all your friends to talk to you.
So I think this will cause some Interesting Tension in whatever hypothetical relationship they could have. Like, especially if Dib feels like he finally found a kindred spirit but then Dipper has no idea what the fuck he’s talking about and he feels like the rug’s been pulled under him once again. Dipper has a bit more experience interacting with fellow Paranormal Nerds who are more knowledgeable and more obsessed than he is (in many ways, Dib has more in common with Ford than with Dipper) but he’s also a lot less likely to fall into, like, the starstruck sidekick role with a kid his own age then he was with the Author of the Journals.
(And of course, just because Dib has more Thoughts about Paranormal Stuff in his brain all the time doesn’t necessarily mean he has more knowledge and expertise about the subject.)
But at the same time… they would still be the only other kids they know who share these interests. Dipper does a lot better than Dib in terms of not being totally socially isolated, but all of his fellow Paranormal Nerds are grown-up. And as important as his friendship with Soos and Ford is, it would be Different to be able to talk about it with a kid. And with Dib…. he is just so desperate for someone, anyone, who will actually listen to what he has to say.
So it’s like… their shared interest in the Paranormal is both what will pull them together and a source of tension in their dynamic, and to me that’s a super-compelling idea!
