“i was with my band most of the night, then my girlfriend.”

“some of the girls seemed kinda catty, but i was too drunk to care about it.”

“i know one of the society kids just had a death in the family, so i guess her. honestly i was surprised to see any of them show up.”

Laurel was making her way through the crowd, talking to people and having a good time. She was never like this, but it was like she was on some kind of high, and with the beer in her system she was a social butterfly. Spotting Mason, however, she slipped away, plopping herself down in his lap. “Hi,” she smirked at him, licking her lips.

mason and his friends had been planning this for weeks--and he didn’t even care if society members showed up. he was just trying to have fun, ride the high he had been on for the last few days. laurel was the main reason for his happiness, so having her flop into his lap only made his mildly buzzed smile brighter. “hey, gorgeous girl.” he grinned, kissing her head. “havin fun?”

Laurel couldn’t help the happy laughs that escaped her lips at Mason’s repeated words, especially when he picked her up and spun her around. Her hands rested on his shoulders, which wrapped around his neck when he finally set her down. “I love you too, so much,” she told him before leaning up, kissing him passionately in the rain.”

god, her laugh. it was enough for him to fall right there. he didn’t even care how fucking cliche they looked, his heart felt like it was on cloud nine. kissing her for a few more moments until the lightning cracked the sky again, lighting up her features and making mason realize they should go. “c’mon.” he mumbled, pulling her hand and leading her back to the entrance of the building. 

Laurel felt herself instantly calming down when she felt his hands cupping her face, her forehead resting against hers. It was like her heart beat instantly slowed, her blood pressure instantly dropped, and she was back to normal. No longer panicking. “I do trust you,” she whispered, looking up at him. “I love you too, Mason.”

mason had to hold back every ounce in him that wanted to kiss laurel, knowing if he did he wouldn’t stop.he felt her calm down, one of his hands reaching down to grab hers gently. “i love you, laurel.” he repeated, the smile of reality creeping on his face. “i love you i love you i love you--” he ghosted his lips against hers, instead wrapping both arms around her and picking her up quickly, spinning them both around for a moment. 

When Mason pulled her towards him, that was it. Laurel refused to fight him, refused to fight what she was feeling any longer than she already had. Looking up at him, the storm roaring around them, she knew what she had to do. “I’m scared,” she told him softly. “I’m scared I won’t be enough for you. I’m scared to open myself up like that again,” she admitted, voice cracking. “But I–” Laurel cut off, pressing her lips together. 

mason immediately brought his hands to her face, holding her gently. his fingers tangled in her now wet hair as his forehead rested against hers. if he was her calm, her security before, that’s what he was going to be now. “you’re more than enough for me.” he tried to reassure her. “i’m scared to. but i’ve never wanted anything more in my entire life....just trust me.” he pleaded, scared of her answer more than anything.

“Because you shouldn’t!” Laurel shouted at him, throwing her bag to the ground. Tears were falling down her face, which weren’t visible due to the rain. There was a crack of lightening, which felt like it was right on top of them, causing Laurel to jump slightly. “I don’t deserve to be loved by a guy like you, Mason. I’m too broken!”

“i’m too broken.” the words echoed in his head, the hollow of his chest. he knew she was crying, her breathing was a giveaway. he had been there for the panic attacks, her weak moments....now he was the reason she was crying. “you’re wrong, i’m not perfect.” he half shouted, walking to her and reaching out. “neither are you. we’re fucked up and damaged and broken. but i don’t want perfect.” he pulled her closer, the thunder above echoing even louder. “i want you."

Laurel stopped speed walking outside when she heard Mason’s voice, shaking her head and turning around. “No!” she shouted at him over the thunder, holding her backpack in her arms. “There’s nothing to talk about Mason, you don’t feel that about me. Stop kidding yourself, it’s not true!”

there were about four feet between mason and the girl he had fallen so hopelessly for. four awful, painful feet. he ran his hands over his face, rubbing the rain away and trying to formulate what words were going to make her stay. “yes i do! i’ll tell you a million times and i’ll just mean it more and more every time i say it. i fucking love you, laurel.” he was nearly pleading, the storm making his heart race even more than it would have been. “why don’t you believe me?”

Laurel nearly jumped at his words. I love you. Oh my god. She didn’t know how to react; whether to say it back, to reject him outright, to accuse him of lying. Her body tensed, more than before, and then suddenly she was up out of bed and grabbing for her clothes. “I have to go,” she said in a hushed voice, pulling her clothes on as quickly as possible, grabbing her bag, and literally running out of his apartment.

well, that certainly wasn’t the reaction mason was hoping for. feeling the emptiness from her getting up almost broke his heart, hearing her words was almost the final smash. “laurel, wait--” he spoke, voice rushed as he found something to put on. sweatpants would work, easy to slip on as he ran after laurel outside, the rain soaking them again almost immediately. “laurel please, can we talk about this?” he shouted over the thunder cracking above them.

Laurel froze a bit at his words. I’m here to protect you. Always. Those were words of commitment, something that she and Mason didn’t have. Something she never expected from them. It was why she pushed her feelings for him down to the depths of her soul, not wanting to do or say anything that would indicate that. She tensed a bit, then relaxed slightly in his arms, not saying anything as she watched the storm.

mason felt the obvious tension as soon as he spoke. too much too soon, he was gonna scare her away. her lack of reply didn’t help his racing thoughts either, what if she wanted to leave? no...it was now or never for him. it was the perfect moment, at least that’s what his heart told him. hiding his face in her neck, holding her tighter, mason took a sharp breath; this could make or break them. “i love you.” his words were muffled but still audible, saying a silent prayer that she wouldn’t laugh and leave him. 

“hey now, my mother would have whipped my ass if she saw me doing that.” he said peering over the space in between the washer and dryer near mason. where did these fuckers put his bag? he knows it has to be down here. “uh…. no. couple mates thought it would be funny if they hid my bag from me that has everything i need in it.” he said biting the bottom of his lip slightly wondering if they were really his friends if they did that to him. they have been picking on him for a while. “guess they thought it was funny or something.” he said now looking up at the higher shelves.

mason’s mom was very hands off in her parenting--she wasn’t the one who would have reprimanded mason anyway. he got enough of that from whenever his birth father came into the picture. he furrowed his brows when he heard why luca was searching so hard for his bag, shaking his head. “some friends, huh.” he replied, looking around but not moving much until he saw something in the dryer two machines away. “tell your buddies they need better hiding spots. or maybe you need new friends.” mason sighed, grabbing the bag from the dryer and tossing it over to luca. 

“Not scared,” Laurel smirked at him, licking her lips as he teased her. She loved being in his arms, arguing with him playfully and with no real anger. And she liked how he argued back with her. It made her feel equal, and not less than. “Just startled,” she chuckled, leaning up and kissing him before sitting up, blanket wrapped around her, to better watch the storm.

arguing and debating had slowly become second nature for mason. he wanted to say it was because he was preparing for a future in politics, but in reality it was because he had some of the worst anger management in existence. but he was at his calmest around laurel--she made him feel settled and content. watching her sit up he felt empty, not holding her anymore. he joined her and sat behind the girl, pressing gentle kisses to her shoulders as more lightning and thunder cracked outside. “well, i’m here to protect you.” mason mumbled against her skin, arms wrapping around her waist. “always.”

“no no no no, man look. you don’t put the darks in with the whites,” he said seeing mason mix his laundry all in together and it almost made luca cringe. how did he end up in the laundry room? he wasn’t sure, oh wait that’s right his mates took his bag and he was here to retrieve it and they hid it from him. the laundry room was the last place he was looking in could be in one of the washers if he was going to be honest. whatever, it needed a good wash anyway. “did no one teach you how to do laundry when you were younger. if you put the red in with the whites it will turn pink!” he said his eyes almost widening in horror, whatever it wasn’t his business. his mind went back to looking for the bookbag. “oh if you see a bag in there with my shit mind pulling it out for me?”

mason was mostly independent. his mom was always working, trying to support him and then his siblings...or they were busy running away from the person who he shared the other half of his dna with. regardless, laundry never actually became a problem for him until he was older--all the running usually left him in dirty clothes anyway. plus, he worse mostly black and gray. how bad did he really need to sort laundry? “didn’t know you were a laundry connoisseur.” he spoke, watching the boy search around the room with furrowed brows. “did you forget it here?”

Laurel smiled up at Mason. God, he made her so happy. Her smile widened slightly and she leaned up, kissing him lightly before turning her head back to the storm roaring outside. After a second she felt a shiver go up her spine and she tugged the blanket back over her body more, curled up with Mason. There was a loud crack of lightening, followed by an aggressive thunder, and Laurel jumped slightly, giggling.

mason caught himself watching the little things laurel did. perhaps that’s why he was falling so fast, so hard--everything she did was so beautiful. her giggles, the goosebumps on her skin, the feeling of her lips on his...mason was thoroughly whipped. “scared, princess? i’ll protect you.” he teased, kissing the top of her head and holding her tighter.

Laurel loved laying in bed, in Mason’s arms, just relaxing. Especially after sex. Especially when there was a storm roaring outside and they could watch. The thunder made her jump a bit every time, the lightening even more, making her bury herself into his chest. “I love it when it rains like this,” she said softly, looking up at Mason with a small smile.

mason felt like he rarely had a calm moment anymore. not with school, his family at home, his friends and band mates constantly wanting to hang out....it was little moments like these with laurel that he had been savoring over the last few weeks. a hectic storm was causing destruction outside, yet he was perfectly content with holding her, fingers tracing over her back aimlessly and watching as the lightening became the only light in the room. “i do too.” he mumbled back, her smile making him weak as always. though the peacefulness of the moment didn’t stop his thoughts, his wondering of what laurel was going to say not long ago.

ace had never been known for his docile personality.  well, certainly not to those who truly knew him.  he was known to be polite, but there was no limit to his diva side that came out when he was around his friends.  and this happened to come out the most when there were distractions around.  it was easier than ace would like to admit to distract him – the easiest method was obviously fire.  that bit had never been a secret, but missing out on things was another more secret thing. he liked to be up to date on things ( something he really never was ) since the feeling of being left behind was too all familiar to ace.  being raised in the sort of environment that he was, his parents were quite strict on tv hours, no video games, all of his homework, music practice had to be done before he could even think of looking on his phone.  and being left out was not something that he HAD to experience anymore.  

it was why whenever he was practicing and his phone continuously was going off – it irritated him.  because there was a part of him that still heard his parents’ voices in his head nagging him to get his practice over with before he checked his phone.  but the other side of him kept checking his phone to make sure he wasn’t missing out on anything important.  “nothing is up with me.” ace snapped back, huffing with annoyance at the other.  there were really no other two in the band that bickered as much as ace and mason did.  there was a part of him that didn’t know how to reply to mason’s accusations, mostly because they were true.  ace wasn’t going to admit to his feelings, therefore he just turned his body back to the piano. “I’m not done yet, I said I was going to reply again when I was finished with my practice.” 

mason was hot headed at times. he had a quick temper ( something he had gotten from his sperm donor, as he referred to him ), but he wasn’t quiet about it. recently he had been smoking more with mads, or even being around laurel helped to keep his blood from boiling for no reason--though today was not one of those days. his mother getting shorted on her paycheck, his rejection on the application he had sent in to every nearby pub for a part time bar-tending job to help his mom and sister out, now ace acting like a child....eventually he was going to boil over. 

the sarcastic laugh that came from his chest was heavy, thick from how annoyed he was about this whole thing. “no, you’re done.” he moved to close the slider by the keys, still making sure to avoid ace’s fingers--he wasn’t that much of a dick. “nobody here is watching over your shoulder to make sure you practice. you’re gonna come with the rest of us to get burgers and hang out and listen to whatever random songs ren puts on and just breathe. you don’t get to say no.” his voice was irritable, mildly threatening if he went that far....but his intentions were good. he looked out for ace like a little brother ( something he didn’t have anymore ). he wanted him to be happy, use this time away from his suffocating family as a reason to relax and have fun. 

mason knew he would never be accepted into laurel’s family. not that he wanted to be, her family’s opinion didn’t matter to him. laurel’s happiness did, and on the other hand she knew that even she didn’t care what they thought. so mason wondered why neither of them tried sooner, though part of him still said it was because laurel didn’t want him like that....not like he wanted her.
