What does your character want (their goal or challenge)?
The only thing he truly wants is for Oliver to be truly happy and know what it’s like to be fully loved. He wants to make sure that his son, though not biological, always feels wanted and loved and secure. Other then that, he just wants to find out what being truly happy feels like. He also wants to find out why his father left him and his mother when he was so young, and what he did to drive him away. Thirdly, he needs to figure out his health.
What are their external needs/desires?
He also strives to maybe one day own the vet’s office as he once had his own practice in Nashville and it’s weird to him to not own the one he is currently working in.
What or who stands in their way and could stop them?
His fear of failure, money.
What will they do about it?
He needs to find a way to make enough money to buy the practice, reach out to potential investors.
What happens if they fail?
With money as tight as it is, he would possibly have to pick up side work, which means even less time with Oliver which is not something that he wants to have happen.
What sacrifices might they have to make?
His money, which sounds shallow but with the economy what it is, it would mean putting a bit of struggle into his and Oliver’s life and they would have to give up going out and doing things and living on a very strict budget.
What motivates them inwardly and why?
His son is his motivation for everything. He never knew that he could love someone the way that he loves Oliver and he just wants to make the little boy happy and proud however he can.
What is their internal struggle?
Mason needs to let people in and let them see who he is. He likes to put up a wall and keep people at bay. He tries to fix everyone else and leave himself to crumble behind them. He wants to be truly happy as he sees other people around him. He also needs to deal with his mother;s death as it has been 6 months and he has activly ignored it and the feelings that surround it. He’s only mentioned it to a couple people because he has no idea how to handle those feelings when they do arise so he needs to find a new coping mechanism to help him handle those feelings.
What are their flaws? How do their flaws play into their internal struggle?
Mason is hard-headed, stubborn, he doesn’t like to ask for help, even if he needs it. He is closed off and tends to ignore his own feelings and not deal with things when they need to be dealt with.
What fundamental changes do you want to see in your character?
I want to see him be unafraid to actually deal with the things that he needs to deal with and let other people in. I would love to see him actually look for his father in order to find the answers he needs to move on because he never actually dealt with his father leaving.
What heroic qualities must emerge for them to succeed?
Bravery, vulnerability, strength
