you were legends.

it’s not about the AGE. i would have no issue if joshaya still had a 3 year age gap and maya was 30 and he was 33 and they got together. i also have no issue with the 10+ year age gap between many many many couples (all above the age of 20) that have been “going on for centuries”. 

it’s about their MATURITY, their stages in their lives. josh is a college freshman. he has friends who are having SEX. and DRINKING. he has friends who are about to do things that only adults do.

maya is a high school freshman. she’s fresh out of MIDDLE SCHOOL, for crying out loud. middle school, where they learn about how their body changes and shit like that. where NOBODY is thinking about sex or drinking.

think about how creepy of a relationship that would be, with josh, surrounded by his friends who are probably having sex & doing things that only 18-year-olds should be doing, dating maya, who’s new to high school and probably wouldn’t spare a thought for sex. yet josh is, because he’s 18, who can blame him???? [and if you’re going to argue that disney would never let that happen, shut up because this has nothing to do with what disney will or will not show, it’s more of the idea of it; realistically speaking] 

maya and zay. no one ever considers maya hart to be the type to break for a boy. she doesn’t let them think that, with her jagged edges and her quick wit. she doesn’t let them see that after she convinces lucas to pick riley (she’s the safest choice, the one he’ll most likely end up happy with), her heart sinks to her stomach every time she sees them together, all smiling and holding hands. she doesn’t let them see that despite putting riley’s wants first, and convincing herself that her heart doesn’t ache for him, she still loves him, and it kills her to see them together.

everyone thinks zay babineaux has the whole love thing figured out. he’s got a beautiful girl waiting for him in texas, who calls him daily and always says how much she wants him. but that’s stopped. lately, their phone calls have been arguments, about who should get on the plane to visit. and then, one day, she calls to break up with him. she says she found someone else, someone who’s in the same state, who can be there for her at her every beck and call.
