Ophtha!
I am honestly surprised by how much I’m liking Ophtha right now. Didn’t expect this, really, but it’s just so interesting and fun to study. :)
It helps that our classroom for Ophtha is reaaaally nice (hello, airplane seats and really cold aircon and not-PGH vibe), and the consultants we’ve had so far are really good and patient. :)
The only thing I don’t like? Ophtha is only 4 days long. Boo.
Look where I am now, four years later. I’ve taken the boards and now, I’m a licensed physician, about to start with the rest of my medical career.
I realise that this was the moment when I first started to like Ophthalmology - although I didn’t seriously consider it until the end of ICC year. I was still mostly considering IM (Endocrinology) back in LU4 and ICC. Then I decided to take an elective in Ophtha during clerkship, figuring that I won’t really be able to rotate in all the subspecialties during my regular clerkship rotation, versus if I took an elective in Internal Medicine, and I’d end up being exposed to too much of one subspecialty but comparatively lacking in the others, when all I wanted was a general exposure. And choosing to take Ophtha for my elective proved to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made - that was when I really fell in love with the specialty. By the time I’d finished my IM rotation in clerkship, I was already certain that I wanted to go into Ophtha - and that was cemented further during internship (but IM was still very tempting, to be honest).
Today, I found out that I got accepted into PGH’s Ophthalmology residency programme. It’s going to be another long journey, and it won’t be easy. But, I want this.
Wish me luck. :)
