I’ve thought about this a lot. I didn’t watch the finale, so maybe this is unfair, but it just sounds like it was so predictable for a show that had a king hump a woman out of a window. They could have had Catherine arrange for a double to be executed in Mary’s place. (Mary had been locked away from the general public for years and even the real Mary wore a wig by that time and wasn’t greatly recognizable.) Bash takes off with Mary once the double arrives. Elizabeth finds out about the plan shortly after they’ve taken off for America(!). She goes back and forth on whether to send her men to retrieve Mary, maybe having a conversation with a slightly gloating Catherine about it. Ultimately, Elizabeth decides to do nothing, rationalizing that if the journey to the New World doesn’t kill her, the land likely will and if faux Mary is executed, there’s no way she could try to come back for the throne. The show ends with the queens now on their own journeys disentangled from each other and it’s kind of sad, but also filled with possibilities.
