I had been both looking forward to and dreading this discussion for quite a while. My desire to go to college was enormous and I was afraid that my mom was going to talk my dad into not letting me go. If it were up to her, Iâd be locked up in my room for the rest of my life. But, I wasnât a child anymore. Yes, technically I was only about ten but, both my body and mind had matured at an abnormally rapid rate. What exactly did she expect was going to happen when I finished all my high school classes so early? That I would want to sit around for eight years until I was actually on this earth for eighteen years to move on to the next step? Not a chance! I was like a sponge when it came to learning, soaking up every piece of knowledge I could get my hands on.
Not to mention, I think itâs time I learned how to handle myself in society. I havenât had much of a chance to do that yet. I had been surrounded only by people that knew my secret. I needed to learn how to be around people. My plan for life was to live it. I wanted to be like Carlisle, a part of both worlds, working in the human world, as well as being a part of ours. I understood that I would have to be careful and eventually, I would have to say goodbye to new friends and lives made but, I needed to learn how to do that somehow, and keeping me cooped up in our family home was not going to allow me to do it. Besides, Jacob was going to go with me. How much trouble could I get into with him keeping an eye out? @ImpetuousForce
*We can't avoid the inevitable. My relationship with Bella has been, to put it lightly, strained since we've started talking about letting Renesmee go to college. She obviously hate it that I took Renesmee's side on this whole college thing and not hers. It too worries me that she'll be away from us and if something gets to happen to her, we won't be there to help her immediately, but Jacob will be there. He'll protect her with his life if it comes to that.
It's time to let her go. If we keep her locked up in her room forever, she'll resent us. I understand Bella's reasons as to want to keep her with us a little longer, but at the end of the day, Renesmee has grown up to be a very mature lady. She knows the rules. I trust her to do the right thing. It's just college after all, what could possibly go wrong with Jacob there protecting her?*
||We were still on the sore subject of college, now Edward, and what seemed to be the entire family were siding with Renesmee on the matter. I felt human again, powerless against the rest of my family members. It seemed that nobody wanted to listen to what I had to say, my voice being masked by everyone around me. I just wanted everyone to see why I was so hesitant to let Renesmee go off on her own, but even Edward backed me into a corner on the situation. Â It wasn't that I didn't trust Renesmee, or think she wasn't ready for the next step, there was just too many negative scenarios playing in my head that I refused to want to cave it. In the end Edward had talked me into at least giving her the chance, saying she'd resent me further along the line if I didn't allow her some leeway. I wasn't happy about it though, and despite not fighting with Edward, we weren't on the best of terms. I sighed softly as I sat by myself reading, listening to the sound of both Renesmee and Edward shuffle around upstairs. It was time to sit down and talk, no more arguments, just give everybody what they wanted.
I move at vampire speed up to Renesmeeâs room, Edward catching sight of me and frowning as he followed close behind. I lightly tap on the door before making my way into the room, staring at Renesmee as she sits in her bed|| We need to talk.
As I heard the tap and the creak of the door, I slowly turned my head in the direction of the door. I saw the somber expression on Momâs face first and wasnât quite sure what to think of it. Was she not looking forward to letting me down, telling me that no matter what my arguments were, they had decided not to let me move forward and go to college? Or, was she dreading telling me that she had been out talked on the subject and she was giving in, letting me go? Dadâs expression didnât tell me much else. He didnât look quite as grim but, it was still hard to know what that meant.
I shuffled up to the head of my bed, pulling my feet up underneath me, crossed legged and leaned back against my pillows. I stuffed the college catalog for the University of Alberta that I had been perusing through under the pillow beside me and looked to my mom, âOkay. Iâm ready.â and I was. I was ready to hear they decided I could go and I was ready to fight with everything I had if the decision was that I couldnât. @ImpetuousForce
*This is supposed to be a special occasion. Sending our daughter off to college, giving her the boy talk and all that nonsense. Instead it's just full of doubts and uncertainty. Even tho I can't read Bella's thoughts, I know what she's thinking. She's made it clear that she's against this idea, I would be too if it weren't in different circumstances. But Renesmee is ready. I don't see why we should prevent the inevitable. This college thing was going to happen sooner or later and as much as I hate the distance it'll put between us, it'll be for the best. Standing in front of the Renesmee's bed, I looked at Bella for a second before I took my eyes back to our daughter.* Well sweetheart, as you know, your mother and I have been talking about college. It's been difficult for all of us, but we've finally made a decision. *I looked at Bella, cocking my head towards Renesmee's direction.* Do you want to tell her? @RusticPurity
||I took my place in the room, leaning against the room with arms folded as Edward took the lead in the conversation, and in the argument. As Edward would so kindly put it âThis was the inevitable, and best thing we could give herâ I just wished it hadn't been so soon. Renesmee looked at us both with uncertainty, but I could tell she was ready to fight if we refused her. We were more alike than I'd like to openly admit, taking some of my qualities along with her father's. Edward interrupts my thoughts I take an unnecessary breath, diverting my gaze from him to look at Renesmee as I give her our final decision|| You can go to college, if that's what you want and that's what will make you happy. || âAnd everyone else in the familyâ I make a snide comment in my head, thankful for the shield that kept Edward from my thoughts||
The decision just about knocked the wind out of me. I wasnât expecting it to be a yes. I was expecting to have to argue more. I even had a bunch of points all ready to make. Things like what else was I going to do if I didnât go? Sit around the house for eight more years, hunting and spending all my time with Jacob? I internally grinned at that argument. They all liked that Jacob was my protector and had gotten used to him being around all the time but, they didnât want us too close, too quick. Yes, heâd be with me at school but, we would have plenty of distractions to keep us busy. There was also the whole piece of me learning to become social, outside of the family. I wasnât sure what I wanted to major in yet. So, I didnât have a valid argument for that but, I just wanted the chance to learn more⌠of everything I could!
I must have sat there for a good three minutes, waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the â...but,â to come but, neither did. Cautiously, I spoke, âI can?â Then I thought about it, take this opportunity while you have it. Donât give them a chance to take it away! âI mean, I do. I do want to go. Iâve actually,â I pulled the catalog back out from under my pillow, âbeen looking at the University of Alberta. Itâs not that far away. Itâs just in Edmonton, and they have a great liberal arts program.â I pushed the catalog toward the end of the bed, expectantly, hoping I wasnât pushing my luck too much. @ImpetuousForce
*University of Alberta, why doesn't that surprise me? A good college, not too far from here, but not too close either. As colleges go, this one is as good as any. Bella's expression is worth more than a thousand words, but the fact that she's willing to do this for our daughter is enough. The surprise on Renesmee's face when Bella announced the good news was incredible. It's obvious that she was ready to fight is with everything she had to make her case, which makes me incredibly proud of her, thankfully it didn't come to that.
Reaching out for the college catalog, I looked through it quickly before I handed it to Bella, who took it carefully like it's a bomb that it's about to explode. Sliding my hands into my jeans pockets, a lopsided smile formed on my lips as I looked at Renesmee.* Have you thought about what you want to major in? If you're gonna stay on campus or you want an to stay in an apartment near the school? In my opinion, I think that's the best option, cause that way Jacob will be with you 24/7. *Of course the idea of Jacob living alone with my daughter is not exactly my cup of tea, but her security is the most important thing to me.* @RusticPurity
|| It didn't surprise me on her choice of university, during the brief period of giving Edward the cold shoulder I had searched colleges in the surrounding area and came across Alberta myself. Renesmee is full smiles and joy at the moment, and despite not agreeing with this wholeheartedly, I was glad this was something she wanted so deeply. I take the catalog from Edwardâs hands, not daring to look at him in that moment. My eyes scan through the pages within moments, and I was proud of her choice and dedication to the matter. I place the catalog back down on the bed and listen to what you both had to say, not really wanting to interfere knowing that my thoughts on the matter would be overshadowed anyway. At the mention of Jacob and Renesmee living together come up I can't help but smile to myself, knowing the discomfort Edward must be feeling my bringing it up. If I couldn't torture him for convincing me to give this a chance, that thought alone would clearly sour the images for him in the slightest matter, though we all knew Jacob would never do anything to harm Renesmee and he'd protect her with his life||
I sat quietly and watched as Dad glanced over the book I had been so attentively reading, and when he passed it off to Mom, I waited anxiously for his reaction. I was once more blown away by his reaction. An apartment? On my own? Well⌠with Jacob but, as adults! This was getting better by the minute. I quickly responded with, âOh, I agree. I think that getting an apartment would be the best idea. That way, Jacob is always there to protect me and also, I wonât have to worry about roommates leaving the blinds open in the morning, on a sunny day.â My skin didnât sparkle like my parentsâ did but, it still did have a slight glow to it in the sunlight. I changed the subject fast, back to my major, âI havenât decided on a major, yet. Although, from what Iâve read, thatâs not uncommon. A lot of students donât know until their second or sometimes third year. Iâve also read that a lot change their minds a few times over the course of schooling so, I have plenty of time to decide. Although, Iâm thinking about something like teaching art⌠maybe. I donât know, yet.â I offered an excited, sincere smile. I couldnât believe this was all happening. I was a little surprised that Mom didnât have more to say, though, stuff like rules and stipulations for them allowing me to go. Iâm sure they would come. @ImpetuousForce
*Bella's silence on the matter is quite frankly, scary. I know that deep inside of her, there's a bomb about to explode. Like I said it before, I wished I could read her mind to know what she's thinking. Obviously she's against Renesmee going to college, and it bothers her that I took our daughter's side instead of hers. But seeing how happy and excited our daughter is, I can't take my words back. Torn between my two girls, I let out a resigned sigh as I sat down next to Renesmee.* An apartment it is then, I'll start looking for the perfect place for you guys. *One with lots of security cameras so I know that Jacob will behave with our daughter. Man, I hate this idea, but what the hell am I supposed to do then? This imprint thing is ridiculous, especially when is directed to my daughter.* No, it's not uncommon, and you still have time to decide so don't worry about it. *I shook my head at Renesmee, reaching out for her hand to give it a soft squeeze.* Teaching arts? That sounds good. Whatever you want to do, we'll support you darling. *I pressed a small kiss on her temple as I looked at Bella.* Right Bella? @RusticPurity
||I watched as they both rambled on with their thoughts on the days ahead, planning for her to leave and get an apartment with Jacob, which Edward clearly wasn't too keen on but because Renesmee had him wrapped around her little finger he agreed. I was cautious about it all, but my views were null when it came to the matter and the final choice. This is what Renesmee wanted and no matter what my objections were, they were going to be bypassed and thrown aside until Renesmee got what she wanted, which she did. As Edward speaks I glare at him, my expression not much changing since the conversation began. I stare down at my daughter, sighing before I reply|| We always have and always will. ||Just because I didn't want her to leave yet, didn't mean I wouldn't support her and offer aid when she needed. She was my daughter, I had to do what's right by her|| Your father might be more willingly to let you leave, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit to one side and say nothing. If you need us, we'll be there.
