People ask me how I get over having pets that don't live long and most of the time it's not great, but you deal with it. You know how it is. The ones that haunt me are the ones I couldn't do anything for. For instance:
-Macarena had liver failure, got extremely bloated. The only treatment was draining her knowing she'd probably die of a heart attack. Which she did
-Grace had epilepsy, no treatment for that either. Just hope her next attack doesn't kill her, until it does.
-Renata had cancer. Kind of a treatment for it (chop the tumours up) until she's done for
-Darcy (pictured) got a nasty ear infection. Gave him so much antibiotic but it wasn't enough because the infection was in a tricky place for bloodflow. It reached the brain eventually, and I had to put him down because feeding him was impossible. He was pretty young too
-Gervasio developed heart issues and apparently a gerbil is done for the moment they start showing symptoms. Took him to the vet and even beautiful Iris, the bastion of "I'll keep them alive no matter what" inmediately saw there was nothing to be done. He was dead the next day
The issue is not so much how long small rodents live, is more the fact that even if you catch something, it'll develop horribly quickly and not have a proper treatment most of the time. So you spend a lot of money on a diagnosis (because they're exotic animals, you see) and what comes back is a sorry for your loss. And then you get assholes asking "Why did you spend 400€ on an animal that's worth 10, just get another one". Just terrible all around.
