Cedar hesitantly lets the other person support Cap, their injuries starting to become too much at this point. They're... starting to regret it. Almost.
"That's a great question, actually. Apparently, I've lost my memories of the past... five years? I think? To me, I'm 16. I ran away this morning. I have no fucking clue what's going on or where I am."
They follow their old friend without thought, just glad to finally have a face they recognize.
The women keeps going, and âhmmsâ.
âSorry to say, thereâs a lot thatâs different. I can tell you if you wantâbut yknow. Itâll be a long story.â
She pauses in a clearing and sighs. âThis looks like a good place as any. Quill, can you start the fire; Eren, start skinning those rabbits we gotââ and here Ophelia begins rattling off people and tasks which they go about with minimum complaining.
Darling sits back and meows, irritatingly, at Cedar for ignoring her attempts at wanting scritches.
"Apparently, I'm different, too. I have win-" They turn to look over their shoulder, brows furrowing when they notice their severe lack of wings. "...Nevermind." Roll with the punches.
Of course, they crouch down and start petting Darling, squinting up at their friend. "I know about the city. And my family. It... I'm dealing with it. I guess. How have you been? Have... we managed to keep in touch like we promised to?"
She shakes her head, and begins to take off her bow and quiver and then armor. âWhen you leftââ she says and the stops again.
âWhen you left, your dad took the throne. Nobody was allowed to send messages in or out. We used to set them up in that secret spot, do you remember it? And thenâlike. Prime, I was stupid and I got caught with your letters.
I was punished. Almost lost my life, but I survived.â She smiles again, and itâs almost exactly as you remembered.
âI was trained to be one of the Kingâs assassins. They thought theyâd broken me, like I ever could be. Just lucky the Goddessâoh wait. Too soon.â
"My dad? He- what happened to my grand-" Cedar cuts off, a horrible feeling sinking over their shoulders. "They said he died after I left. How did Orpheus die? Don't lie to me."
"The secret spot? God, I was going to send the best letters there. You-"
Cedar catches onto the mention of the Goddess, and this only deepens the Bad Feeling. "...Goddess? What happened?"
âYour granddad died peacefully, Cedar. They did a coronerâs thing and everything. Heart attack in his sleep. That, I can promise you.â
Ophelia takes a quick look around, and then leans down. âSomething your dad did like really made Lady Luck mad. Like super super mad, she came down and razed the city to the Ground. Everyone who survived went to her new city and became her new followers. Itâs lead by her High Priestess.â
She turns around and unbuckles something from her belt. âItâs honestlyâso weird. I never expected it, but everyoneâs still a little too scared to talk back to the Goddess since the city burned. She wouldnât kick them out or anything but still. Theyâre likeâso scared.
"Heart attack? He was healthy-" They shake their head, "I'm... still wrapping my head around his death. I'll deal with it. Thank you."
Their brows furrow further at the mention of Ophelia destroying their city, a shock of fear traveling down their spine at the sheer mention of her.
"I, uh... don't blame them. I'm also a little terrified of Lady Luck. And she has a High Priestess now? Who's that? So I can avoid them and stuff. I don't really... want to deal with her. Not while I'm doing all this. It'd be too much."
âSurprise and hurt can worm its way into anyoneâs heart, and kill them Cedar.â
Suddenly, sheâs not looking at Cedar. She fiddles with something on her belt, and âhmsâ. âI donât think youâve got to worry about it,â she says, âconsidering that she never leaves her place of worship, youâre all good.â
The air itself lets out a breath, and the camp bustles into activity again.
"...Yeah. That's true." Cedar also looks away, voice dropping as they do.
The tension only makes them paranoid, and the paranoia makes them want to leave. So, they reluctantly stand up.
"That's good, I guess. And, um. Thank you- for saving me, and my friend, and everything, and for catching me up- but... I should go." They need to get out of this place to figure their own damn head out.
âYou canât go,â she says, and stands up as well. âThere could be more Hunters out there and⌠trust me, Cedar, you donât want them to find you.â
Darling mews and threads between Cedarâs legs, before laying over their feet, in an act of defiance.
âPlease? Please just stay around until your friend wakes up, okay?â
