He did want to give her the benefit of the doubt, however. Looking over at the storefront he was by--a cake store--she probably had good reason to be here. 

“Am I keeping you from something? I can move,” He inched out of the way on the boutique’s window display, hoping to give her more space. 

Ah, if only it were that simple.

“There sure is a lot of it. We can probably avoid the pre-packaged chocolates in the baked goods section, so we’re going to have to....find a way around it. You know this store better than I do, what’s the best route?”

“You sure are giving that dish a good stare. Is something the matter with it?” Ashe prides himself on only a handful of things, and one of them was noticing a discerning eye. That said, he’s not very familiar with with this particular dish and he’d like to learn more! He was out and about looking for ideas, not wanting to default to his standard fare for the event later that evening. What if they didn’t like sauteed fish or Angelica salad? That ‘takoyaki’ he’d sampled earlier was really making him second-guess his abilities!

The other man did want advice, after all, and so he decided to take it upon himself to give him a hand.

Holding the dish close to his nose, he gave it a sniff. “Well the fragrance isn’t bad at least. This salad a local dish?” This place was full of surprises already--once more plants he wasn’t familiar with, but the presentation of it didn’t seem bad. Modest, but he wasn’t the sort that enjoyed flashy presentation either. 

Archer took a bite. Eyes closed, he did naught but nod for a few moments. “I can tell you’ve been at this for a while--it’s cooked well but you’re a bit modest with the spices. You can get away with bringing out more flavor with this.”

           IT   was a relaxing process, picking out produce. There’s an art to it, of course — figuring out what’s ripest, what shape warrants the most of each fruit or vegetable, so on — but the concentration required is what made it so relaxing. Modern farming methods yielded so much more than she could have ever imagined when she was alive, that much was certain… So perhaps she gets a bit too eager with her spending money, limited as it is. She should really find a job… But working for someone else leaves such a bitter taste in her mouth. Hm… 

           Her borderline-meditative state is abruptly shattered by a familiar voice —- how did she not sense him sooner ?  Now his Servant status seems obvious, a familiar thrum right to her bones ( albeit much more faint than it should be ). Caster finds herself so startled by his presence that she doesn’t even have time to come up with a witty retort, nor to make her displeasure perfectly clear. No — instead, her eyes flit from his equally perplexed expression to the… Thing in question. Almost immediately she starts, rearing back as her heels grind into the pavement. What… Was that ? It’s certainly never been out on display before — or perhaps she’s never noticed ?  No, she would most definitely notice… That. 

                 ❛   Gh— !  Did it move just now… ?   ❜   Rhetorical. She hopes he won’t grace that with a response, squaring her shoulders as she collects herself.   ❛   … There should be some sort of label nearby, Archer. I’ve never seen it before… Why so many ?   ❜

Hands went to his hips, brows furrowed as he gave her a sidelong look. She was just as perplexed as he was--which meant this likely wasn’t anything they were accustomed to. It was certainly a convincing performance at least.

“Labels, right....How foolish of me.” A genuine misstep on his part, though he seemed a bit bitter about it. The labels provided more questions, suddenly realizing there was a lot more unfamiliar wares in this particular section.

(At least there were labels. If it was being sold openly alongside familiar things, apples, pears, perhaps it was fine. It was too early to tell...)

That was the least of his worries, as a hand moved in the corner of his eye.

Her, of all people. Why hadn’t he sensed her? 

“Caster,” Archer’s glance seemed more confused than anything. Something about this whole situation felt off. Cutting to the chase might reveal too much. “....do you have any idea what that fruit is?” he pointed to the oddity, that looked vaguely like a tentacle. “I’m not familiar with it.”
