Maroon – Technician
Faking it 'till they make it
Task: Nerdy coding things
Fun Fact: doodles embarrassing things on company time
Maroon is a crewmate that has worked with MIRA for around two and a half years by this point, starting as an unpaid intern and getting suddenly promoted to technician. They take new crewmates under their wing, understanding how grueling and thankless the job can be. Despite trying their best to be friendly and sociable, they're very anxious, introspective, and sentimental. Maroon keeps a notebook in their backpack that they regularly draw in. If you get a chance to sneak a peek, you'll find it's full of doodles of their friends aboard The Skeld.

“The calibration’s off and every time I try to readjust it nothing happens.” Orchid explained while they began to walk through the halls alongside Maroon to Navigation.
A small sigh of frustration escaped the navigator. “Plus, when I try to bring up the star charts on the computer the program lags and then crashes. I think the Captain downloaded too many video games… again.”
They’d tried asking Red to pay attention to how much storage they were using up, but as per usual the captain had just hit them with a “It’s no biggie.”
Maroon walks side-by-side with Orchid, taking mental notes as she explains the issue.
When Orchid brings up the second issue, Maroon just sighs. "Yeah, that sounds about right... Honestly, the problems might be connected. It wouldn't surprise me if the Captain left some games running in the background... and if they did, the central processing unit is bound to be chugging like crazy..."
They gain confidence as they talk, becoming more animated and gesturing with their hands, "Which would make the star charts lag and mess with the recalibration process! Which you'd think they'd take into consideration given both of our input, but-"
They pause as they draw close to Navigation, retreating back into themself with an embarrassed sound, "Shoot, that was a little harsh... I-I promise, I'm not really bothered by it! I mean, they're, um... giving us something to do?"
Orchid listened politely while the technician rambled, a small smile forming on the navigator’s face when she noticed Maroon become more animated and confident while they talked.
It was nice to see the technician come out of their shell.
They let out a soft laugh when Maroon tried to backtrack. “It’s okay, Roonie. I completely understand the frustration. You don’t have to feel bad about expressing it around me, I promise.”
Pulling out their ID card, Orchid unlocked the door to Navigation and headed inside. “And you’re right! It gives us a chance to hang out, so it’s not all bad!”
"Thank goodness you understand where I'm coming from, Orchid..." Maroon visibly sags with relief, casting the navigator a grateful smile as they walk inside together.
The center console seems to be the best place to start... if they can figure out what's eating up the memory on the ship's computer and clear it, everything else should fall into place after that...
"And we should maybe, like... also hang out outside of work-related stuff sometime... Maybe? I-If that's, um... cool with you, haha..." They ramble as they sit down in the captain's chair, not-so-subtly avoiding eye (visor?) contact by focusing intently on the monitor in front of them.
Orchid went over to their usual spot— a seat a bit off to the left next to the captain’s chair where the ship’s panel of navigational systems were. The panel also served as a sort of makeshift desk for them too and they’d decorated it as such with some flower and space themed stickers and a few other little knickknacks.
They sat down sideways on the chair so they could face the main console and watch the technician work, also being ready in case they needed to do anything to assist.
“Oh! Yeah, of course that’s cool with me!” The navigator brightened at the request. It didn’t escape her notice that Maroon was getting a bit self conscious again, so she wanted to reassure them that the desire for friendship was reciprocated.
“I have some movies on my laptop. Maybe we could have a movie night or something?”
Maroon perks up at that, glancing up at Orchid with a sparkle in their visor, "You have movies?? A movie night would be so much fun! Do you have, like, a favorite genre or anything? I mean, I'm pretty much down for anything, I'm not picky, haha..."
The collection of assorted trinkets on the navigation panel draws their attention. They hum quietly, making a mental note to look more closely when they fix the recalibration software.
The technician turns back to the work at hand, "If you wanna, maybe you can tell me about your movie preferences while I work? Or anything at all! I just... like listening...? In general, ahaha..."
Orchid nodded, more than happy to answer the question. “I like a lot of genres! Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comedy, Romance.. but I’d say my favourite would have to be Mystery films.”
The navigator continued to talk while Maroon started to work on the computer.
“Whenever I watched them with my family or friends back home I was usually the first one to pieces things together and figure out who did the crime.” They smiled softly while recalling those memories.
“I, heh.. even wanted to be a detective when I was little. My parents bought me a book of ciphers and I’d spend hours trying to decode messages or come up with my own.”
"Hm!" Maroon gives a nod of approval to each of the genres, hands flying across their keyboard as they begin clearing the ship's central computer of Red's video games.
(...They're not completely heartless about it, though. As they work, they make sure to safely store the data on one of their empty thumb drives. Maroon even leaves a few games that have less of a strain on the system, namely chess and solitaire... and that one dating simulator. You're welcome, Captain.)
Maroon tilts their head as they listen to Orchid's warm tone, a smile of their own making its way to their face. A detective, huh?
"I mean, it sounds like you'd be a great fit for the job!! To me, at least..." They pause, thinking about their phrasing, "You're, like... really smart! And pretty patient, too... and good at solving problems on your own! So... you're kinda using those skills even now! It's... pretty cool, I think..."
"Like, um... in a way you're still keeping that childhood dream alive, y'know? At least, that's how I feel about it, hehe..." Maroon resumes their typing, visibly relaxing as the lag starts to subside. "I was never really good at figuring out Mystery films, ahaha... I'm always super shocked at the ending! Maybe... you could tell me what to look out for...? Like, when we... y'know... have that movie night?"
A slight flush reached the navigator’s face from the praise before she looked away bashfully. “Oh, hah.. thanks.”
They hadn’t really talked about that with anyone else for quite a while. They supposed they felt comfortable enough around Maroon that it had just slipped out naturally.
Orchid’s gaze returned to the technician as they continued talking, emotion swelling in their chest at the mention of how they were keeping their dream alive in a way.
“I.. Thank you.. that, uh… actually means a lot to hear.”
It really did.
She had stopped paying attention to the computer during all that, but a quick glance showed the lag was noticeably improving.
“Oh, yeah of course!” Orchid perked up when the topic of movie night was brought up again. “Absolutely!“
Maroon giggles bashfully, "Lessons from Detective Orchid...! Hehe, can't wait..." They speak quietly, more to themself than to Orchid, before they dive back into their work.
Several minutes of the rhythmic process tick by, until Maroon finally leans back in the captain's chair with a relieved sigh.
"Aaalright. That should take most of the strain off of the ship's central system... Everything seems to be running much smoother than it was..." They murmur, nodding in satisfaction at the diagnostic results. "We should be able to reboot your navigation panel and resolve the issue with the recalibration program now!"
Maroon stretches, shaking out their hands as they stand up, "Phew... you weren't kidding about the captain not paying attention to their storage... one more game and I think the ship's computer would've gone kaput!"
They remove the thumb drive, placing it on the console for Red to discover later. Turning to face Orchid, they smile softly, "Sorry... I'm gonna have to kick you out of your seat for a little while... b-but I promise I won't touch any of your trinkets! Unless, y'know... you're alright with it, ahaha... Your decorations are, like... super, super cute, by the way!"
It still made Orchid feel bashful, but it also warmed their heart to be called that.
The navigator quickly used the sleeve of their cardigan to wipe at any stray tears that might have slipped out, then tried to distract themself by refocusing their attention on what Maroon was doing.
When it was announced that everything seemed to have been resolved and that they could turn to fixing the nav equipment Orchid let out a sigh of relief.
“You’re a miracle worker. We’re lucky to have you.” She commented earnestly.
It was true. Without Maroon the ship’s own captain would have likely wrecked the computer.. with video games no less. “Though I think we need to stage an intervention for Red..”
At being asked to give up their chair Orchid nodded. “Oh! Yeah, no problem.” They returned the smile before standing up so Maroon could take over.
“And, thanks, heh. I don’t mind at all. I trust you.” She added warmly in regard to the technician asking if they could touch any of the decorations.
"Pfft," The mention of staging an intervention makes Maroon laugh softly, "They don't have the best track record of listening to either of us... we'd probably have to, like... get the whole ship in on it, or something, ahaha..."
Admittedly, they're more than a little flustered by the miracle worker comment, deflecting with a sheepish titter and a humble wave of their hand. Luckily, they've gotten pretty good at acting normal... (despite their inability to take a compliment.)
Well. Able to act normal until Orchid's (very sweet!) trust comment. Maroon's brain is now properly scrambled. She trusts them? Them???
"Ahem," Maroon clears their throat, "That's, um... aha... thank you! S-So-! Um... any of these trinkets have, like, ah... an interesting story? Or, like... anything you, um... want to talk about? The rebooting process shouldn't take more that a few minutes? So, ahaha... if you, y'know, have any stories to share, I'd, um... love to listen! I mean, you, like... know that by now!"
They smile awkwardly, drumming their fingers against the navigator's panel.
Picking up on Maroon’s returned nervousness, Orchid nodded and began to go over some of the knickknacks decorating the makeshift desk.
“Cyan also gave me a couple of these healing crystals.” They gestured to the various crystals sitting on top of the panel that the gemologist had graciously given them. Each one had come with a meaning that Cyan had explained. Clear Quarts for focus and clarity of mind. Amethyst for protection and peace. Rose Quartz for self-compassion. And finally, Tiger’s Eye for courage and confidence.
“And.. this,” the navigator pointed to a decorative compass that was placed next to the pencil holder and some folders. “was a gift from my parents after I completed all of my navigational courses.”
If the technician was to pick it up to have a look, they’d see an engraving on the back that read:
To our Dear Orchid,
While you’re out there following the stars,
Don’t forget to also follow your heart
Love, your parents
It was a little cheesy— okay maybe a lot— but it was something that Orchid cherished.
With nothing else to do but wait for the reboot to finish, Maroon relaxes bit by bit as Orchid talks.
After giving Orchid a quick glance to confirm it's alright, they pick up the Tiger's Eye. They turn the stone this way and that, mesmerized by the shimmer. They set it down carefully, turning their attention to the decorative compass.
Maroon gingerly picks it up while the navigator explains the sentimentality of the gift. As they flip it over, they brush their thumb against the engraving with a warm smile.
"Aww... what a sweet gift..." They murmur, "Reminds me of the kind of thing my family would do, ahaha! I mean, I didn't go through the same kind of formal training you did! So my folks weren't able to do that, but anyways, um... this is really sweet!! Your family sounds so supportive, haha!"
They set the compass back in its rightful place, humming as the navigation panel comes back online, "Thanks for sharing this with me, Orchid. And for... y'know... the nice things you said earlier, ahaha..."
“Yeah, they’re great. I really miss them..” The navigator grinned fondly while they watched Maroon place the gift back down.
Once they got to Industria and finished this mission they’d have to arrange a visit with their parents.
“Your family should definitely be proud of you, too. Honestly, I think it’s more impressive that you’re so skilled without any formal training.”
Orchid leaned over to look at the now functioning nav panel, giving the technician a warm smile upon being thanked. “Of course. Thank you for listening, and for all the nice things you said too, heh.”
They reached over to interact with the screen, quickly placing the calibration back to its original position. “And for fixing my equipment.”
"Aww, you give me way too much credit," Maroon giggles bashfully, rubbing the back of their neck. "I was just in the right place at the right time, ahaha..."
They duck their head at the praise, a faint blush dusting their cheeks as they wave their hand dismissively, "Fixing equipment is what I do! ...And I, y'know... like saying nice things to you. You deserve to hear them, after all, hehe..."
Now that the job's complete, Maroon stands from Orchid's chair. They stretch as they do so, turning to give her a timid smile.
"If we're still, um... y'know... up for movie night? I should be free later tonight...?"
A small blush of their own formed on Orchid’s cheeks thanks to the returned praise.
“You deserve to hear them.”
More emotion rolled through them and they had to blink to hold back a couple tears once again. She’d been struggling with believing that for a while now, but it still felt really, really nice to hear..
It seemed that both of them struggled a bit to accept compliments, huh?
“Heh, well.. I like saying them to you too, so I guess this will be happening a lot.” The navigator replied in a lighthearted manner while they took a step back to allow the technician to stand up from the chair.
They gave a warm smile once they heard how Maroon would be free later that night. “Absolutely! My schedule is clear tonight too! Let’s do it.”

Orchid:
> I’ll play with you...
Blue:
"Lovely! I do enjoy a good game..”
"Listen closely."
"h1 to a8."
"a1 to h8."
"b4, g4, b5, g5..
"d2.. d7. e2.. e7."
"Finally, c1 and f8."
Orchid:
> Hm.. something like this?
Blue:
"Clever detective..”
"I had a feeling it was you."
"Here's your next test then."
> I wonder how far you are willing to take this.
Orchid:
“Let’s see..”
“…”
> Depends… what do I get if I win?
Blue:
“Mm..”
> What would you want?
Orchid:
> The truth about who you actually are.
“Do we have a deal.. Doctor?”
Blue:
> But that is only if you win.
> And what would I get in return?
> This deal doesn’t seem appealing to me…
> I have no obligation to you…
> Unless you’d give me something I want.
Orchid:
> Tell me what you want then…
> And if I lose… you can have it.
> Is that a more appealing offer to you now?
Blue:
> It’s a simple, small request.
“You’ll barely be inconvenienced.”
> I want … you.
Orchid:
“…m-me?”
> Why would you want … me?
Blue:
> You proved yourself to me the moment you answered these ciphers.
"You are an interesting specimen..”
"Are you opposed to the idea then?"
"I will not stay and bother you any longer if so."
Orchid:
> Fine
> I accept your terms.
> If I win, I get answers.
> And if you win, you get … me.
“…”
> But I’m not a specimen.
Blue:
"Oh, but you are~!"
"You're all the same at the end of the day"
"Made of blood, bone, and soul."
"Am I wrong? I know I am not."
"You are all such fascinating things."
"So wonderfully.. intelligent"
"So.. ostensibly small. Insignificant."
"A mere fly in the grand scheme of things."
"And yet...”
"So.. blasphemously beautiful."
"Now, now."
"Shall we play, detective darling~? :D”
Orchid:
"And you.. are substantially arrogant."
“Let’s play.”
Blue:
“Might I suggest you pick a side?”
“Good choice, darling~!”
“Now, now.. your move.”
Orchid:
“…Stop trying to distract me.”
“Are you so worried you might lose that you need to r-resort to that?”
Blue:
“Hm? Oh, no.”
“You misunderstand me..”
“This is just how I act, dearest!”
“Checkmate.”
“Good game, my dear. That was so much fun!”
Orchid:
[No Spoken Dialogue]
Blue:
“Detective, dear..”
“We had a deal.”
“Do not tell me you were merely just lying.”
“That’s not nice.”
“Stay…”
“And listen..”
“You know.. you had so much potential.”
“You would have made a wonderful detective, Orchid.”
“So clever and brave. You’ve proven yourself with me in mere hours.”
“And all they do is throw you out for who you are?”
“Such a shame.. they missed out on a brilliant member.”
“But I am here now.”
“And I know you’d be a wonderful spy assistant for me, yes?”
